80's movies - which stand the test of time (1 Viewer)

I have a 5 yo.

Goonies

Flight of the Navigator ( I'd forgotten about that until it was poster earlier)

LIttle Monsters

The Wizard

Will be unleashed soon!

We caught the last 30 minutes of ET the other day and he loved it. I was surprised.

little monsters is pretty good

monster squad is worth a mention
Was just going to mention Monster Squad (holds up surprisingly well...early Shane Black screenwriting).

Big Trouble in Little China (special effects are somewhat laughable today but the movie was already cheezy-genius)

Die Hard still holds up well (for teens)

I hope someday that my 3 year old boy and I can enjoy Fletch together. :excited:

Until then, my almost 5 year old daughter loves The Wizard of Oz. :oldunsure: (yes I know, just find it odd that a kid 3-4 years old loves this movie so much  )

My kid is almost 11 now. He loves all my old 80's (a few early 90's sprinkled in and some 70's) school flicks. He has seen:

Rocky - Rocky IV

King Kong (76)

Jaws

Jaws II

Jaws III

Jaws IV

The Bad News Bears

The Bad News Bears In Breaking Training

The Sandlot

Little Big League

Rookie Of The Year

The Natural

Field of Dreams

Escape From New York

Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure

Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey

Indiana Jones Trilogy

Star Wars

Bill and Ted's

Major League

Goonies

Back To The Future Trilogy

Alien Movies

Total Recall

T1 and T2

The Running Man

Friday The 13th Flicks - All of them

Nightmare On Elm Street - All of them

Halloween - All of them

The Karate Kid

Adventures In Babysitting

Ghostbusters

Gremlins

Poltergeist

ET

Flash Gordon

Battle Beyond The Stars

Dragonslayer

The Last Starfighter

The Thing

Big Trouble In Little China

The Lost Boys

I am sure there is more. But all those are a blast to watch over and over. Even the crappy Jaws III and IV LOL!!

Can't Buy Me Love

All 3 still great
Never saw it originally, but my wife and I (tried) to watch it a couple of months ago. She remembers loving it. It was a horrible move.

My nomination, though I'm sure it has been mentioned, is Planes, Trains and Automobiles. We watch it every Thanksgiving at my house.

I put on Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure in my World History class and the kids(8th/9th) went nuts. I think there is something there and it shows that something is missing in these more current films.

San Dimas High Rules!!!

The Empire Strikes Back is 1980 so that would count but it doesn't say anything about the 80s really. Die Hard from 1988 would be on my list. The Shining also in 1980 but really set in the 70s, still top notch. First Blood is a really good one as well.

"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that."

I believe the line is, "San Dimas High School football rules!"

That's not a bad line but doesn't make a movie.

95% of what I would have mentioned has already been covered but I did like The Dark Crystal as a kid - but I don't know how it would hold up now.

Was crawling thru the guide last night, having a hard time finding anything and found Stripes. God that was a great movie.

Haven't seen the whole movie in a while, but Parenthood was really good too.

"You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, or drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish! But they'll let any butt-reaming ##### be a father."
I think that line is the high point of Keanu Reaves acting career.

And one of my favorite lines of all time.

Not a movie, but man... I have been jonesin' to watch some old cartoons I used to watch.... like Battle of the Planets back in the day... fired up the first episode on TV.com and man it was bad. :(

You're right, he says it very fast and its kind of a throwaway line in the context of the movie but I always laugh when he does this and they answer back in cheers. Inadvertently they manage to capture a snapshot of society at large.

Porky's

Private School

Just One of the Guys

Gratuitous nude scenes from the 80s, these breasts hold up well.

I think Caddyshack is funny to the folks that saw it back in the day when it first was unleashed. It spurned on a lot of beer commercials and also there is a funny side to golf that Shack hits perfectly. Not everyone is bathing in money that likes to play the game.

But if you are just tuning in now, it might not seem as funny. Vs Airplane! which still is slapstick U for many.

Hipster youth.

I can see it on one hand - and not on the other.

I never liked vaudeville comedy or hackey guys like Milton Berle, Shecky Greene, etc. when I was growing up. So I can younger people seeing it as not cool because its not from their time.

On the other hand Aziz Ansari stand up is ####### awful.

I was VERY late to the game watching a few "classic" comedies, and didn't find any that funny- Blazing Saddles, Caddyshack, Airplane, Animal House. I think part of it growing up on it, watching it with friends, and reciting the lines.

I find Aziz severely unfunny.

I was just throwing that out there. Not giving you #### personally KP.

So how about a few examples of what you find funny - movies, people, tv shows, etc.

I'm kind of OK with everything you mentioned except Airplane! I'm kind of surprised because I think the lines and humor still blow most away and films now are still trying to emulate it without matching the laughs. Also there are things in that movie relevant to the 70s and you would never encounter them now. I don't think peaceful monks are still hanging out at airports like they used to when that was the only way to reach large groups of people coming and going all over the world. Now you just turn on the internet and presto.

I'm stumped to hear you don't find Airplane funny. I like Blazing Saddles a lot, AH and Caddyshack I like but I'm not watching them as often these days and understand why some don't find them as funny.

Variety of the usual suspects : Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, Impractical Jokers, Step Brothers, 40 year old virgin, Sonmething About Mary, Robin Williams, Bill Burr, Louis CK, etc, etc.

Watching The Cable Guy again right now - one of my favs

I guess for whatever reason, I don't connect with stuff before the mid-80s.

Solid list for me as well KP  . Though not a fan of the prankster stuff - just seems so mean spirited.

I can't believe how re-watchable Step Brothers is for me.

Around 1/2, and probably not the ones people would consider upper tier comedies. Like I said, I probably like it if I grew up with it, but not if I didn't watch it until college age+.
