All Android/Google All the Time (1 Viewer)

I went to the Verizon store tonight to upgrade my plan to unlimited.  I went from 8gb to unlimited data for pretty much the same price and when my wife's N5 gets paid off  ($175) my bill will go down  $29. Anyway,  the sales lady was asking about my home Internet and offered me This for  $20 more dollars a month  to replace my TIME WARNER Internet.  Now I use SlingTV and Amazon Prime and was wondering if this thing would work for me. I have my doubts but really have no clue.  My N3 doesn't get the best reception in the house. I have to have my phone in certain spots to get reception but my wife's N5 gets pretty good reception throughout.  I have a metal roof which I think is part of the problem.  Can anyone offer any input on this?
Looking at the details of the new unlimited plan, it says that "Mobile hotspot/tethering reduced to 3G speeds after 10 GB/month"

I think I'd get some clarification on that since it seems like if you're using it for your home internet, you could go over that pretty quickly and then be bummed about your speeds for the rest of the month.

Thanks for the response. The ##### at the Verizon store said that the speeds would go from 4G LTE to just regular 4G. Imagine that.

After reading your response and watching a couple of YouTube videos I decided to just stick with TWC for now. If I didn't stream I would definitely think about the Jetpack/ Hotspot for the house. If anyone is interested here are the 2 videos that I watched and helped me make my decision.

Note4 acting weird this morning.  Data doesn't seem to be working.  I can get text and email, but if I try to use Spotify, it says I am offline.  I can open Chrome and surf to bookmarks, but tried to follow a link sent to me via a text, and it says I'm offline.

Edited to add, did a restart and it didn't make a difference.

This appears to be a signal issue (Sprint, FTR).  Left my building for lunch, and everything worked fine.  Back at my desk, and it is out again.  You could strike this up as typical I guess except I've never had a reception issue at my desk before, and b) the LTE signal strength indicator is full.

Damn...

Sales since Oct 2016 Launch of Pixel
80MM Samsung
70MM Apple
2.5MM Google Pixel

This looks to be a very solid phone from spec perspective and was the first Android phone I seriously considered.... what happened here? :(

My wife has a Galaxy Tab 10.1 that is about 6 years old (model GT-P7510). It runs Android 4.0.4 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") which is from 2011 and is no longer supported. As far as I can tell, this Tab will never upgrade to a newer/better OS. After streaming Netflix for many years, the tab no longer runs the Netflix app and won't run Amazon Prime Video app either (requires at least Android 4.1), meaning it is essentially useless to her, as streaming video is 90% of her use. It won't recognize our 5ghz wifi, so connects to the 2.4.

Do I just junk this thing now and buy her a new one?  Is there any work around or any way to get it to upgrade or to run either Netflix or Amazon Prime Video? I've contacted Samsung, Amazon and Netflix, to no avail. I hate to just toss it, but I'm not sure there's any use for it at this point. It was pretty nice back in the day. Both my kids' kindles seem to be far superior, despite being smaller/cheaper.

TIA FBGs

it appears that rooting and installing a custom ROM is your only option. The Dev community looks fairly active from what I can tell...

Is the pixel currently being sold in all of the markets apple & Samsung devices are?  These numbers are pretty far off.  HTC isn't as big as Samsung or Apple, but I would expect them to still produce more than 2.5 million phones.

Those are legit numbers.... I'm expecting a significant price cut on Pixel soon.

I think most phones work so well now that only the geeks care about the specs. If geeks are trying to get a good value on a phone they get something unlocked, probably from China.

The masses fall victim to familiarity and advertising which is why Samsung and Apple are still #1 and #2. Neither has been very innovative in a long time. At best they crow about their "cameras" that are about as good as a $100 point-and-shoot camera.

G5?  Shiiiiii... I'm happy as a clam still with my G2. No joke
I just bought a new round of phones for myself and the ol' lady. I glanced at the prices of newer phones these days (holy ####!), so I went with a refurbished G3 for the wife and a 1st Gen Moto X for myself. 2 great phones for us for about $230 total.

I must say, I've never had an LG product, but damn that G3 is awesome. I even bought one for myself just to have a back-up/extra device when one craps out.

I have no idea what's been going on in the phone world for the last 3-4 years. With a phone like the G3 available and so cheap, I'm not seeing too many reasons to find out.

I got G3s for my son and my wife when they needed new phones. They are both having problems reading the Sim cards. Just be forewarned. I don't know if there's a fix. I tried a couple of things but haven't gotten to prying up the prongs yet.

My last phone was a G3. I had an S3 before that, but wanted a phone with a removable battery. After 18 months or so the screen just died. I didn't drop it or get it wet, it just started doing this thing where the screen would slowly fade to black a few seconds after I turned it on. The phone would still register my taps as if the screen were working, I just couldn't see anything. LG said the warranty on the phone was 16 months or so, and so I'd have to pay for them to fix it. I went online and read that this happened to many others as well. I decided to go back to Samsung and just deal with the battery being built-in.

Haven't caught up with this thread but anybody have a Pixel? I am curious to how that performs.
There's quite a few people here with a Pixel I think. I'm liking mine so far. Really solid battery life and haven't had many problems. There was a bluetooth connection issue I had early on that was fixed by an update I think.

If my phone dies today I'll replace it with another G2.  It's still going strong, doesn't glitch, fast, screen and cameras are good.  At least for my purposes.  If I did a bunch of VR stuff I'd probably need to recalibrate my expectations.  But I don't so my expectations are really not to break the bank and have reliability.

That's why I buy cheap phones. For $100 and change, I don't care if a phone has issues. Dropping $700 on a phone, that damn thing better be perfect and last for 7 years. But I know many phones won't do that. I'm fine taking chances on $100 phones. Many of the lemons have been weeded out by then, and if there is a major issue, it'll often reveal itself quickly, well within the time frame to return it. Past that, if I have to buy another phone in 6 months (never happened to me), I don't care.

Hope these hold up. If not, I'll still go refurbished again.

I'm on a Nexus 6 and just got the notice that Android 7.0 is available.  Should I upgrade?   Been pretty pleased with the way things have been running for the past few months, so if there are a lot of bugs with 7.0, I'll be annoyoed.

What is compelling you to "upgrade"?

It's always seemed strange to me that I know so many android users who are constantly dissatisfied that they don't have the latest/greatest OS and I know so many iUsers that are just as frustrated, but it's because apple has forced them to "upgrade" to a new OS that makes their old hardware slower and more buggy compelling them to upgrade their hardware.

I guess it made sense years ago when OS upgrades really made the platform more stable or...... well, better in some actual discernible way.  But when was the last time you upgraded the OS and really thought, "NOW, NOW this device is perfect!.... well right up until there's a NEW update"?

Not criticizing you in particular, just the complicated relationship so many people have with their phones.

that's why I asked(?)  I've been burned on upgrades in the past that regressed the device. I haven't updated my desktop's iTunes in ~3 years.  OTOH sometimes the update really improves battery life and it's worth some of the hiccups for that.

Well you definitely hit my weak spot there, I will do nearly anything to improve battery life myself(other than completely neuter the nice screen I paid for.).

In that case definitely upgrade and report back if it helps! Are there some other apps discussed in this thread that extend battery life? I have tried some of the sleep mode apps and like them as well as the apps that help you manage which apps start when you boot your device.

Zippy phone. Awesome battery. Nova launcher on top is butter. Only a couple complaints...Coming from a note 4 the font is smaller on some webpages like FBGs. More importantly the phone likes to run warm as I've noted here a few times. I'm on my 3rd one and each behaved the same. Light web browsing, Facebook app, email, etc and it quickly gets into high 90s / low 100s. Note 4 never did that. Have tried different things to get it to run cooler but no dice. Would like to swap for the S8 when it comes out but guessing I'm stuck with this for a while. It's also pricey as I went with the 128gb model.

My nexus 5X is on 7.1.1 and I rarely notice any difference when installing upgrades.

Question: When an update is downloaded, say it's 75mb, does it overwrite the previous update files? Are the old files automatically deleted? Or are all of them stored and taking up space?

Any pixel owners in here move up from a 6P?   about to put my Wife on Fi but she'll need a new phone.   She's on the fence between a 6P and a 32GB Pixel.

Also, does the pixel have a micro SD slot?

I love the pixel so far, but wish I would have gotten the larger GB model.  I have the 32, and am starting to have to clear up space regularly.  15 GB for apps, 5gb for system.  Only a few GB for pictures, and other crap...  And the 32gb appears to only be 29.7.

I went from the 6p to the pixel XL, I'd go with the 6p.  I don't notice much difference, the fingerprint scanner on the pixel is better.  Actually the biggest difference I noticed is I use my phone as a hotspot at work, the 6p was great but the pixel sucks as a hotspot, it's really annoying.

I'd dig it because it is easy to root. I have been using an iPhone 6+ for the past few years since it came out, and although I am very happy with it, I kind of miss XPosed Framework to rid the device of ads and make it more secure.

I think I will get an Android based tablet for the meantime. When I worked Google I/O last year Android was getting into more Pro Audio applications which iOS rules in. Android to me is more consumer oriented but that's perfectly fine, media consumption is great for portable devices and if the hardware is inexpensive yet can run the latest Android that is a win/win all the way around.

Just wanted to comment that I got the hotspot problem fixed, it was a T-Mobile issue.  I'd still go with the 6p but T-Mobile is paying for half my pixel which is why I upgraded.

When I plug my headphones in to my Nexus5X, the podcast player app (Player FM) automatically launches and begins playing where I last left off. Does this happen to anyone else? I wonder if it's an android glitch, or a Player FM feature.

Pixel or Moto Z Force?!?!?

Main things pointing me toward the Z Force are: durable screen/glass + water resistant, microSD, Moto X screen notifications

Not a Samsung guy.

So my Note4 finally died.  I'm not really keen on spending top dollar for a top of the line phone anymore, as it is frustrating to get less than 3 years out of a device that expensive (the list is long of electronics in my house that are 10+ years old and still working fine).  So I'm leaning towards getting a Moto G4, and just going in with the assumption that I'll be buying a new one in around two years.  That makes more sense to me than spending $600+ and having to be frustrated with it not lasting much longer.

So if I am comparing apples to apples, can someone give me the bottom line differences of what I would be missing out with going G4 vs Moto Z?  I mainly use it for text, email, surf, google maps for directions, and Spotify.  What would I notice as a difference?

I believe its a setting for media. I have it set to turn on as soon as headphones/bluetooth connects (in my car)

Ran into an issue with my PIxel for the first time. Playing music through bluetooth headphones  I would get some sound drops.

They are older headphones so - I need to do some more testing

For your use case the G4 sounds fine.  The camera will probably be the biggest drop off, and maybe battery life?  I have no idea how good the Note 4 was, but I bet is was great.  There is a G5 coming out soon that may be worth looking at as well.

Maybe take a look at the OnePlus 3 or one of the chinese phones (Honor, ZTE, LeEcco).  Also, I saw a great deal on the LG V20 today if you want to stick to a big phone, but I forgot which carrier it was - T-Mobile maybe?

i'm a G4 owner and pretty satisfied with it. it's nothing sexy but it's reliable and solid. you could do a lot worse for $200.

I just went through the hassle of getting everyone on Sprint, so I need a Sprint eligible phone.  I think that takes out the Honor.  I'll look into the others.  Since I need a new phone like yesterday, I unfortunately can't wait for the G5.

The battery on the N4 was solid.  On a weekend day where I'm a light user, it lasts all day without issue.  However, during the week when I listen to spotify and regularly look at e-mails, I'm recharging it before I leave work.

Happily on my second GS4. My only complaint is I wish it had a little bit bigger screen (geezery eyeballs). Not iP6 ginormous, but bigger nonetheless.

Removable battery (3000 mAh ZeroLemon) lasts almost all day with moderate use and takes 30 seconds to swap out with a fresh one and I'm not tethered to an external battery thingy. $20 for a 64GB SD card and I have more room than I need.  I've gotten pretty used to having both of these. I've looked at other phones (Pixel, GS6/Edge, iP7, Moto Z) and just can't pull the trigger as none seem to have the same price/feature combination.

Just wish Samsung hadn't gotten away from these features. Hopefully they'll get back.

One Plus doesn't run on Sprint, I think.
