It's a CA State Constitutional Amendment - so that's a 50+% of the vote thing? Was hoping you'd know the details. Couldn't find anything regarding how many votes would be required by Congress for it to become official. If its the same as an amendment, then this is a big waste of time.I think there is a provision in the Constitution for recognition by Congress. States can't just up and do this on their own.If this passes, what's the next step?http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2014/07/15/six-californias-tim-draper/12661161/A proposal backed by venture capitalist Tim Draper to divide California into six states has received enough signatures to make the November 2016 ballot, according to the nonprofit Six Californias. Here's how the plan would divide the state:
This is going to be on the ballot, it's a fact.
Apparently it's a big money grab by the tech megabillionaires too.
Obviously all these little mini-fiefdoms could harvest in taxes, create their own state capitals, you name it, it would be the wild west. The guy driving it is a big Silicon tech exec.
And some of these states would be extremely poor, like "Central Cali" especially.
That may not be doable. Silicon would automatically become the richest state in the country; Central CA would become automatically the poorest in the whole USA. Likely some whole regions would feel massively left out and undercut.
The next steps would be:
- The CA State Legislature would also have to approve (50+% again I guess)
- Petition Congress
- There might be some drawing up of proposed new state constitutions
- House would have to authorize it, then Senate confirm (I think) - not a Constitutional Amendment I think, so just passage of both chambers is required
