Any Trading Cards guys? (Sports, etc) (2 Viewers)

That's sucks to hear.  I was wondering what happened to them.  They really changed the game in 89 with their premium $1 packs.  I remember everyone couldn't believe a company would charge that much for retail wax.   FF to current times and folks don't flinch at paying a few grand for a newly issued wax box.
I think they lost their licenses to Panini, who signed exclusive deals with the leagues.  That was why Topps lost out also.  Panini has been poor for the most part.

Amazing how much someone would pay for a raw pack of 86 Fleer Basketball from a random on the internet.  Just on sight,  this one looks suspect as hell.  And this doesn't take into account how easy it easy to figure out the sequencing with good lighting.

Good call. This seller has ZERO prior card sales. Video games and figures are the only thing he has sold of the 19 total sales he has had and one of those was given a negative feedback.

There is no way I would ever bid on this item.

Right now the hobby is a mess.
Enjoy your thoughts on this all. I was getting somewhat interested, but just going to focus on cards that are cheap and look cool for players I love. Got a couple on my way now and the shipping is more than the card

Still need to go through my childhood boxes from the 90s.

Last night at the Braves/Angels game, Shohei threw us (my 9 yr old caught it) the ball he warmed up with in the bullpen - super cool.

Brandon Marsh signed a rookie card for us. We’re going again today, hoping Shohei will sign since he’s not pitching.

Freddie signed 2 cards and a ball for us in June when they were in town. We’re racking up quite a collection of goods just from going to games.

Grading IMO is and always will be the biggest scam in sports memorabilia history. Really just sickening to me.

My unpopular opinion is that grading was great for the industry.

-Great for helping weed out fakes.

-Great for buying cards online with a better idea of condition

-Great for high end collectors. Everyone has a George Brett RC...so if you want to seperate yourself...get a PSA 9 or PSA 10.

-Great for any collector as it has driven prices down of cards with flaws. Want a 65 Mantle? Now a raw card will be reasonably priced being people will adjust their priced based on graded expectations....where as before...Beckett price guide would basically have a Mint and NM price...people would look at their creaeed Mantle and work off the NM price listed.

In summary....it now allows more safer options for every type of collector. I totally get it....lots of subjectiveness and shenanigans...but if you hate grading...there are TONS of great cards that are now devalued because it's obvious it will not grade high

Got Jo Adell, but that’s it.

My beef with it is if you or I send in something to get graded, and a big seller like Probstein does - we know who is getting the better grade.  There are numerous examples of trimmed/tampered cards that are slabbed with better grades also.

Yep. Reality is there is never a system that will ever be 100% consistent and void of shenanigans.

My point is more to the thought if there was no grading company/system;  How comfortable would someone feel buying a 56 Mantle from Sal in Queens he claims in "Near Mint-Great condition for a card over 50 years old".

There are more Jordan fake/reprints for sale than originals out on the webs.

No doubt some of them look good in the slabs (vintage especially).  You’re correct as it’s an easier sell as the doubt is basically removed.  I’m a set collector, so the slabs are out for me.  Really tired of the FB posts of slabbing/cracking and reslabbing.  That has to throw off the pop numbers, no?  One thing I am dead set against is PSA giving out 10s on lards with 55/45 centering.

Anybody a huge Batman fan?  I have a bunch of unopened Batman Returns Stadium Club Card packs that my Dad put in a box of magazines.  I have no clue what to do with these things.

You could probably just put them on ebay unopened.

Maybe when the forum starts back up I'll start a thread for people giving crap away.  I know we had that swap meet thread at one time also.

I'm happy to give these to somebody if they want them - I counted and I have around 16 packs each of that one you linked and a yellow package.

I just discovered Whatnot and stayed strong for a while but then won a free team in a break and then spent another $30 on other teams.
This could be trouble.
I'm still looking for a seller that doesn't scream, have tinny music in the background, isn't obnoxious or just a clone of every other youtuber/streamer/tik-tokker that I hear out there. In other words, not annoying.

I'm taking suggestions.

I won a free team (Falcons) with "crossingxsports" so I bought one more cheap one (Giants) and stayed around for the break (2021 Prizm FB) and he was pretty good and not annoying (might have been Evan or Owen?). I even stayed for the next break (also 2021 Prizm) and paid for the last 5 crappy teams (Panthers, Seahawks, Raiders, Browns, Titans). So I'd recommend checking them out, not sure if they rotate the breaker guys though.

sold off all the 18 blaster boxes of NBA Prizm I had. Now awaiting 15 of Optic football.

Football unopened boxes is where I’m staying currently. If Lance or Lawrence look good unopened boxes will be 2-4x come next off season when this years rookie class comes out that isn’t sexy with QBs.

I like NJCardBreaks on Tiktok for reasonably priced hobby packs. I have done some breaks on the platform, but they are not a good value. Just gambling.

Never thought I would say this, but I am really just burned out on cards. I can't believe people are still buying retail like they are. Sure I pick up a pack or two for fun, but I watched the vultures swarm a restock recently at Target. It was like locust hit that area as soon as the distributor walked away. The same day must have been a Hot Wheels restock. I was buying school supplies and I saw a guy go through the line with HW cars, pay with a card, and then come back in and grab more (which I am guessing he probably hid) and then pay with cash. I can understand the people that bought and held (like some on here) but the people that are still doing Ebay retail breaks have to be taking a bath or breaking even at best with just how overproduced they are right now.

Keep this in mind--Trevor Lawrence has 6,151 rookie card variants---Tom Brady has 135.

I'm just a casual observer nowadays but the variant trend is too much for me. What good is a 1/25 if there are hundreds of other 1/25s of basically the same card? Seems at a certain point the market will get saturated and implied scarcity nullified.

So what's a legit price for a Nolan Ryan rookie PSA 7? I look online and it's all over the map.

(I may or may not have just purchased one from a friend who told me he was giving me a good deal .... PS, I'm an idiot)

Regardless, they'll increase when he passes away. Good long term hold, IMO. If you want to move it, that will be the time to do it.

Seems on Ebay the 7s have been selling for $3-3.5k

what did you pay?

$2200

He was strapped and needed quick cash. I took him at his word that is was a good deal. Sounds like I didn't get ripped off at least.

I bought a "3" for $450, two years ago while I was building a 1968 set. Was just discussing today about selling that set, but I need to upgrade the Mantle that has my autograph on the back when i was nine. lol

All of my 1983 Tops and 1984 Fleer cards made awesome motorcycle sounds when clothespin-ed to my bike frame and ran through the spokes. Kids are dumb lol

I never did that, but a lot of kids did that back then. My buddy across the street and I would play a baseball game in the den at his house. We would turn around a long, butter knife and use it as a bat by hitting cards with that fat end. If you hit it just right, the cards would just rip across the room for a HR.

Yeah, my version of that was thumbtacks into cards for display on my wall. During the boom it killed me to see what I had done as those early mid 80s cards held nice value.

I've probably told this before, maybe even in this thread, but I remember going to the library when I was a kid with my buddy to look up card prices in the price guide they had there in the reference section. This must have been maybe '82 or '83. My buddy was writing the value on the face of the cards in pen. I specifically remember him writing "$2" or whatever on a Rickey Henderson rookie.

I'm finding with retail you're better off keeping it un-opened as hard as that is. I have a bunch of prizm NFL mega's it was over-populated but now it's on to the new stuff. Once it slowly dries up and gets opened the value increases. Just need one of Lance, Lawrence, Fields, Mac to look good.

Example I have a few boxes of $39.99 2020 Select NFL mega boxes un-opened. As Herbert and Burrow started to look good in year 2, this went up to about $150 and since the Super Bowl they are about $200-220 each last time I checked.

I’m pretty much buying singles at this point and limiting any retail/hobby to two baseball sets, Bowman and StadiumClub. Getting into breaks is just throwing money away for me.

I've been buying the singles I want with profit from some flips here and there. Still at some point want to add a holy grail MJ 86'and Gretzky 79' OPC in any PSA grade.

I did a set of Score football with my sons last season, I’m not seeing it available this year? What options are there good for putting a set together with the kids but still upside of some great inserts/autographs?

I just had a dude message me (ebay) about a Mosaic NBA cello (I bought from Target) I sold him a month ago. He messaged now a month later saying he just opened it and it had football cards in it. SMH. I've sold 2 others out of the same box already and no issues. Dude has 800 feedback but there's no way it was a resealed pack from Target. WTF. I guess I'm gonna have to refund this MFer if he starts a return. We've already left each other positive feedback tho so I'm not sure if he even can. F'n ebay.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'd fight if you have good feedback on previous sales (unless he has video proof of him opening the pack etc.)

Thanks. Yeah, he has walked back the refund talk but "swears on his mother's grave" that there were football cards in them and they all looked tampered with. I just checked the one pack I had left, which I had put away for my son for Xmas, and it looks pristine as do the 2 packs inside the outer wrapper. He said he would send pics. I guess I'll reply with my pic of my other pack that came out of the same shipping box as the one he got and the other one I sold with no issue.

I have that Fleer MJ '86 but it is not in good shape. Bought it close to thirty years ago more interested in the coolness of having a Jordan rookie than in its value. Pretty much just collected things I liked in my late teens/early 20's which were mainly old school Bears cards like Sayers, Butkus, Ditka, Payton, Blanda and some stuff that was newer in the early 90's. Picked up a common T-209 tobacco card at around the same time that is pretty cool to have.

Well, that post didn't age well........until I get a jones like I did tonight. Bought two spots in a random Bowman break that includes:
  • 2019 BOWMAN DRAFT SUPER JUMBO BOX
  • 2020 BOWMAN DRAFT JUMBO BOX
  • 2020 BOWMAN DRAFT SAPPHIRE BOX
  • 2021 BOWMAN HOBBY JUMBO
  • 2021 BOWMAN HOBBY SAPPHIRE
  • 2021 BOWMAN CHROME MASTER BOX

:bag:

It's tough, they are fun to do. So many way overpriced.

Have a redemption from a Luminance football case break I did recently. Wonder how long it will take Panini to send me my Malik auto /25.

Yeah, it was a waste of money. Got the Twins and Phillies. Maybe some color, no autos. Should have used the $200 towards a card I actually wanted (as I consistently say to myself).

Anyone have any luck with 2022 Score? I’m waiting to buy a master set off of eBay. I have a major gripe though - in a 400 card set, they forgot to include the Bears. There are three lesser Bears rookies and that’s it.

I have bought some autographs off eBay - Bettis /50, Youngblood /50, Swift /50, K Walker, Lively, V Young, Fred Taylor.
