If the Broncos are going to get their first win of the 2011 season, they'll have to do so without five starters.Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, cornerback Champ Bailey, running back Knowshon Moreno, defensive end Elvis Dumervil and linebacker D.J. Williams all will not play against Cincinnati because of injuries. Of those five, only Williams had been ruled out before Sunday.
Lloyd had the best chance to play. He practiced Friday, and even warmed up about two hours before the game - in his uniform pants and thigh pads — with the team's other wide receivers and starting quarterback Kyle Orton.
Lloyd's groin injury leaves the Broncos with only three active wide receivers: Eric Decker, Eddie Royal and Matthew Willis.
The team does have three active tight ends who could play a role in the passing game in Daniel Fells, Julius Thomas and Virgil Green.
Second-year cornerback Cassius Vaughn is expected to start at left corner in place of Bailey. Jason Hunter will start at right defensive end for Dumervil, and Willis McGahee will start at running back for Moreno. Wesley Woodyard will get his second start in place of Williams at weakside linebacker.
Bailey on Friday said the advice he and the other veterans give to the replacements is simple.
"Just play your butt off," Bailey said. "You treat it like any other game, you just go in ready to go. That's all the motivation they need."
Because of the Broncos' lengthy injury list, there are no healthy scratches on the team's inactive list today.
The only starter out for Cincinnati is defensive end Robert Geathers. He will be replaced by Jonathan Fanene.
