Can we discuss pet peeves here? (2 Viewers)

Here is my point about what should be a mute point. By 2024 we should be living in a society where no car should be required to go in reverse. Every house should have a circular driveway and every parking lot should be filled with middle spaces that can be driven straight out of. Going weeks or months without going in reverse should be a badge of honor. ⏩ 📛
Moot. It's MOOT.

It's a pet peeve of mine.
for all intensive purposes, i think both are correct

You're both wrong. It's a MOO point. Like a cow's opinion: It doesn't matter.

Saying things are "on sale" when the meaning is they are "for sale".

"On sale" means there is a discount applied. So when it's days that "Concert tickets on sale now!", it's not true. They're available at full price. Thus they are FOR sale.
Furniture place near me has been having a going out of business sale for over 20 years
Do they sell Oriental rugs? The only places I've seen those sold are in going out of business sales.
My dad once told me that was the default business model for Oriental rug stores. Not sure if that was true then, or now, or if Dad was being a little bit racist

A particular website I need to use for work, every single day:

Home page: Enter your username to log in

Then

2nd Page: Enter your password for this account

Then

3rd Page: Please select all bicycles in this image to continue

Then

4th Page: Please enter the two-factor code from your authenticator app to continue

Logins only last 1 hour before the above needs to be repeated. Sometime you have to solve 1, 2, or 3 "prove you're not a robot" challenges to get past the 3rd page. Fine... but then what robot would have my 2FA? Isn't that enough to prove who I am? If not.... then what the heck is it for??
I sometimes use the Stickk app, where you can place small bets on yourself in order to encourage certain types of behavior. It does not contain any financial or sensitive personal info. Yet the app requires me to log in every time I use it. Why can't it just save my info LIKE EVERY OTHER #!@%!#@! APP ON MY PHONE!!!!!

Imagine my surprise when I open this thread and find out that there’s apparently wrong way to close a dishwasher and now I have one more thing to feel bad about myself. I wonder how many of my friends and family hate me?
I just play it safe and avoid the dishwasher altogether

When products say, "Peel Here" and you can't peel or even see where you can peel. It's bad enough for something like string cheese but for goodness sakes don't do that to Imodium AD.
Very good post. And for some reason, Imodium tablets are packaged inside industrial-strength cardboard, which guarantees that they will split in half when you push them out of their packaging. Not that it really matters, but what's wrong normal blister packs?

Companies have done away with perforation on many products, but not changed the printed graphic. I point these examples out to my wife all the time.

OMG yes! I hate when it's perforated but doesn't actually tear. Why must you tease me like that, packagers!

I will say that it's statistically safer. I worked for a large electric utility that was rightfully obsessed with safety. They know what they are doing when it comes to safety - and they preached backing into parking spots. EVERYONE's bonuses included a sizable (10-20%) safety measure - even office workers.
Was this for all areas or just for job site situations? I have worked at natural gas plants and other explosively cited facilities where it is mandatory you back in because if there is an issue and you have to get the hell out of there they want everyone just going and not needing to back up to get out. I wonder if the large electric utility is doing it for these reasons.

not sure, I do know it was for all of the outside maintenance crew meeting areas and company parking lots. I worked in large office buildings that that had a lot of different companies in them and a mixed parking garage. Our safety goals weren't very applicative but it made the point of how safety was a priority at the company no matter the job.

Jackholes that hold their gross death sticks out their open car windows, especially while sitting at a stoplight. Even if I'm a good 15-20 feet away, that smoke catches a breeze and ends up coming through my vents. Encountered one of these dolts this morning... a morning where it's actually pouring down rain in SoCal. My God, do you really need a fix that bad?
Keep a water blaster loaded and ready. Hit em in their hand when they stick it out.

I drive a company leased vehicle. Our rule is to always back in (or pull through so you're facing outward if it's two rows facing each other). If I have an accident in a parking lot that involves me driving in reverse, bye bye company vehicle... 😥 The exception is for parking lots where the stalls are slanted (making the driving aisles one-way, because then pulling out front first would violate the one way direction).

Forming a queue perpendicular to or crossing a sidewalk or walkway instead of parallel.

Unless you're intentionally trying to play Red Rover Red Rover or wanting to generally block traffic and gum up the works.

Angle parking for the win!

So what happens if you get into an accident backing into a parking spot? Bye bye vehicle? Seems like there is just as much risk no matter what you are doing.

Certainly a repeat, but I don't care.

If the speed limit is 45, my inclination/tendency is to go 47-49ish. Why do so many others think 35 is the appropriate speed in a 45 zone? :stabby:

X mph+5/-0. Anything else pisses me off

Maybe a bit of a curve (25 mph try to stay at 25, 75 mph I’d say 85 is acceptable)

I imagine backing in, if you bump a car, you just drive away and pretend nothing happened

As a teenager I watched a woman go down the wrong way in an angled parking lot and then try to make the ~120 degree turn into the spot at like 15mph. This was with one of those large 70s vehicles too (maybe an Oldsmobile?). She absolutely slammed the car in the adjacent spot. I don't know if she was planning on running, but she quickly started looking around and when she saw me and my sister standing there watching her shoulders immediately slumped down. Good times!

Rather than a +/- number, it should be a percent. Going 20 in a 15 is way worse than going 55 in a 50

Online shopping site - if I put a product in a cart and subsequently didn't purchase... I don't need you sending me a reminder that I left it in the cart.
I like to leave as many things as possible in my cart just to tease them along.
Pro-tip. My wife will leave items in her cart often and some stores (Macy's for example) will email back saying "hey, we noticed you forgot something. Here's 20% off your next purchase"

According to them the chance for getting in an accident (hitting another car or a pedestrian) while backing in is X%, and backing out it's Y%, and they say X > Y. The rule stands, if I'm in reverse and am at fault, bye bye vehicle. It's one of those rules, I can't fight it, I gotta live by it, so I do it.

Sure it's in here but I'll repeat it - the envelopes with perforation that contain things like bank checks - or, more specifically and timely to this complaint - 1099 or other tax documents. You have to oh so very carefully tear the perforation, then gingerly open the envelope to reveal the really important docs or checks you need from them. One error and it'll rip like one-ply toilet paper. :hot:

Just fold it over on that perf once and it opens easy

Toasters that don't pop the bread/bagel/etc up above the horizon of the toaster. I gotta risk electrocution or 3rd degree burns to reach down there to get my stuff out

Yeah, that's a pain! I've turned it into a game where I launch the little piece of bread up and try to catch it mid-air with my hands.....timing has to be perfect.

I just opened one that needed a finger to gently separate the doc inside. It's begging me to rip it!

A logical fallacy I typically hear in relation to politics, although it's not inherently political. I don't know if there's some fancy Latin term for it a la post hoc ergo propter hoc, but it boils down to "If you do A then X will happen, therefore if you do B then X won't happen."

Example: A friend said to me today that he thinks Nikki Haley staying in the GOP primary might actually be strengthening Trump. Similarly, I've heard people say that a political candidate who is underachieving in the primary (Ron DeSantis this year, Kamala Harris in '20) should drop out early to avoid a humiliating defeat and "preserve their political viability".

But none of this makes sense. Just because Haley's continued presence in the race isn't dragging Trump down it doesn't mean she's strengthening him. The more obvious conclusion is that GOP voters like Trump and nothing Haley does will have much of an impact on that. Similarly, if a candidate is doing poorly in the primary, it doesn't really matter if they drop out before or after a defeat. Either way, what everyone will remember is that they didn't perform well in the primary. It's not unlike a superstitious fan fretting over whether to wear their lucky hat or get up from their special seat on the couch to go the bathroom. It just doesn't matter!

I think people like to believe that their actions impact outcomes, so they convince themselves that by making a decision, they're affecting what ultimately happens. But often, that's not the case, because most of us don't actually have the power to shape events

Mini pancakes flying through the air as you glide like a ******* butterfly snagging them with your mouth.

Reminds me that I have always a knack for catching foods in my mouth. We go to one of those hibachi places and I got guys from adjacent stations flinging zucchinis my way.

One of my proudest moments ever. Going away party for some friends at Surly Brewery here in Minneapolis. Got like 20 people, some small kids mixed in. A bunch of apps were ordered. Everyone is having beers enjoying themselves, when I hear from across the large table my wife regaling our friends with stories of me snagging foods out of the air at hibachi place. My buddy Jacob is like **** you, no chance you are good at this. My wife proceeds to yell "moops!! incoming" as she tosses a brussels sprout my way. She doesn't have the best arm, so it is like high and wide, but I jump into action. Nearly drop my beer, but held onto it, tossed a couple small children aside and launched my body up in the air, snagging that sprout like a ******* osprey or some ****.

Place went nearly silent. I was a ******* hero for those 3 seconds

I have been there a couple times and nothing like this every happened. I feel gypped.
Hit me up next time you go. I will gladly catch some of your food in my mouth :)
