I will say that it's statistically safer. I worked for a large electric utility that was rightfully obsessed with safety. They know what they are doing when it comes to safety - and they preached backing into parking spots. EVERYONE's bonuses included a sizable (10-20%) safety measure - even office workers.
Was this for all areas or just for job site situations? I have worked at natural gas plants and other explosively cited facilities where it is mandatory you back in because if there is an issue and you have to get the hell out of there they want everyone just going and not needing to back up to get out. I wonder if the large electric utility is doing it for these reasons.
I drive a company leased vehicle. Our rule is to always back in (or pull through so you're facing outward if it's two rows facing each other). If I have an accident in a parking lot that involves me driving in reverse, bye bye company vehicle...

The exception is for parking lots where the stalls are slanted (making the driving aisles one-way, because then pulling out front first would violate the one way direction).
