I'm guessing this was Subway.

Love Subway. Steak sandwich add bacon. On Italian herbs and cheese. šŸ˜‹

I’d rather eat a vending machine hamburger

Don’t get me wrong im not opposed to subway but stick to cold cuts there

I never understood Subway. Delis exist. Good delis. You can get phenomenally better sandwiches there.
Subway exists precisely because deli's don't exist everywhere.

Maybe I'm spoiled with where I live then, because for every subway around me, I can name multiple sandwich options within a close range. It doesn't take much to make a sandwich that beats subway.
definitely spoiled.

where i live there are none. metro area 200k+ and there is not a single proper deli here.

even in Milwaukee there are... a couple? and that's more like 1+ million plus metro.

Listen, I like Jersey Mikes too but their prices are even crazier than Subways. I get some people don't mind paying extra if the food is better and the food is better. I was able to get a $6.00 footlong steak sandwich at Subway last week with a coupon.

A good footlong at Jersey Mikes can cost $15.00 to $17.00. I start feeling guilty when I realize I could have paid the same price for a large pizza and fed everybody.
I think Subway pretty reasonably priced too. When I go to Subway, I usually get their $6.99 6ā€ meal deal of the day: 6ā€ sub, bag of Vickie’s Jalapeno chips, and a drink. Good amount of food for that price.

I still can't fathom a scenario where I walk into a fast food restaurant and desire to eat inside there. Depressing. Especially if they want to close. You're just being an assssshat at that point. Nobody is getting tipped on your existence inside. You're just being a jerk.

Go eat in your car or go home.
I can walk into any fast food place at 7:30. Eat my sandwich/burrito/whatever and gtfo by 8pm. If they don't want people coming in at 7:30, they should post that.

7:50 you have a point. 7:30? What the hell takes you so long?

I'd just rather go home and eat in the comfort of my dwelling.

Your life is fascinating to me. How much off the freeway eating are you doing on a regular basis. Are you just driving around the country, hunger strikes and you have to pull off and immediately buy a sandwich? Does your work require you to travel extensively all through the year?

Most of my meals are planned - either cooking at home or I'm driving to an establishment. I can't remember a time where I was just driving around and felt an urge to go to Subway.

I'm in FL. $17.00 still gets you a nice pie here. The most expensive pizza here gets to around $25.00 to $30.00. Here's a place we like to go to on the beach:

https://cocoabeach-brunos-pizzeria.menufy.com/
The build your own starts at $18.50 but I couldn't find what each topping adds to the price. My go to would be pepperoni, pineapple, and jalepeno. What would that run? I am guessing about $30 when all is said and done.

That's my go-to pizza too. :hifive:

Yeah, I don’t get the jersey mikes love to be honest. Ok at best imo
It's more of a comparative thing. For fast foods subs it is by far the best. The quality is always the same at any franchise you go to and is all fresh with quality meats/cheeses. Will an actual deli be better? Most likely but for a mass produced type franchise it is by far the best of the ff sandwich places. My favorite is the Giant 99 on Rosemary. Eat half one day and have the other half the next. Solid two meals.
Used to like togos and Quiznos but haven’t seen them for a while

There's a Togos near my house. I've lived here more than 25 years and been once. Nothing against it, just never think to stop in for a sandwich. Maybe I should? Quiznos went out of business, I think. They were hot for a minute because they toasted their subs. How inventive! (they were pretty good).

We had a grocery store by the office that had a deli - the lady that worked there was a sweetheart and made the best damn tuna sandwiches I ever had. Everything was the same price, no matter what you ordered and man, she'd load me up on marble rye with swiss, extra pickles, crisp lettuce. Heaven. But the place was sold to Albertsons and then there was a lawsuit and it sat vacant for 10 years. I miss her tuna sandwiches so much. I miss you sandwich lady!

deli's seemingly exist mostly in cities with large Italian populations, or influence, in my experience. maybe more it's an East coast thing??

i live in the land of "whoa, that mayo is awfully spicy" and until the last 20 or so years this hasn't exactly been a destination for people that didn't grow up in the area so diversity isn't exactly a strong suit.

Subway is a last resort. It is just blah and nothing of consequence. Probably the worst of all fast food sandwich places. Give me Jersey Mikes, Firehouse, or any local deli over Subway all day every day. Jimmy Johns and Subway are pretty close but I would take Jimmy Johns over Subway.
Jimmie Johns is lightyears better than Subway.
It's better.........but still light years behind Jersey Mikes or Firehouse.
Jersey Mikes, yes. I'm not a big fan of Firehouse. Though, to be fair, I think I've only had it once.

Not that often but that’s generally when I’m in a situation where I’d consider eating subway. Certainly going to trust that over Skeeters Deli in Sisterbang, WV

We’ve done several family road trips over the years. Nobody wants to spend an hour at Bob Evans or Cracker Barrel so we’ll usually grab McDonald’s, Chick-Fil-A, etc. rather than google Yelp or Trip Advisor for the best local eats that just happen to be 0.5 mile off the freeway (especially since 99% of the time it’s all chains)

Think the last time I had Subway was last summer after my kids baseball game and I asked what he wanted for dinner and he said Subway

Where can you get a large pizza for $17? Those are getting up to $30-$40 for good pizza places (I do not count Little Ceasars as pizza).
Really? Where are you located?

A good single topping pizza can be had for under $20 all over SE Michigan. Jets is like $15 and it's usually very good.

yeah... I was gonna call BS too- I live in NYC and routinely get a large pie for my kids and their friends for 20-30, w/ topping or two.

then I checked the better pizza spot we get for ourselves (wife and I usually split a personal "smaller" pie) and those are 30-40 for a large.

Yep. That is happening here. I live about an hour north of Santa Barbara right on the coast. Any good pizza place has really gone up in price. I was shocked the last couple times at the prices.

I live an hour north of Santa Barbara right on the coast. As I said before, my go to is a three topping pizza and that typically ups the price quite a bit from the standard cheese or one topping pizza. Chains like Little Cesars, Dominos, or Pizza Hut are in the range you speak of but go to a local pizza place or a better chain (we have a few around that are chains but not big chains) and the price goes up quite a bit. I was shocked the last few times we got pizza because I was expecting the in the $20-$25 range and it was in the $30-$40 range. Then I looked around and all the solid places were about the same. It's crazy but true.

You should try it again. I think the quality is much better than Subway but you definitely have to find the sub you like as they are all pretty different. I don't have one close by so I haven't gone a lot (maybe a half dozen times total) but have enjoyed it when I have gotten it.

I didn't list Quiznos because I thought they went out of business (at least they did around here). Togos is good. I would say it is on par with Firehouse but I don't have any around where I live so it doesn't jump to mind. Both are worlds better than Subway.

To be fair I’ve only had firehouse maybe 2 times, once was probably 10 years ago and then a couple months ago. I was quite disappointed. Can’t see myself willingly going there ever again

I also feel like subway is just cool to hate on. It’s not great but at least I know what im getting when I I go there

Top 3 for me in Michigan would be

1. Jersey Mikes - excels in both hot and cold subs. Never had a bad experience here

2. Potbelly - more limited menu, no cold options (I don’t think they do anyway)

3. Tubbys - usually getting a steak and cheese variant here

I’d probably put Dibellas #1 but they closed all other locations besides Ann Arbor

Next up I’d probably go
Jimmy johns
Subway
Penn station
Firehouse

I’m sure im missing one

If we're doing SandwichTalk (tm), then I'd be remiss to not mention WichWhich. Maybe they're just a regional chain (??) but I'd put their subs up against anyone besides one of those legit mom & pop delis.

I go to a Subway once a week or so, but a matter of convenience. Downstairs from my office, and usually a matter of only having time to either get Subway or some even crappier prepackaged sandwich from the grab and go inside my office (which also charges more than Subway). If they replaced the Subway with something better, I would not miss it.
we had a Subway (sandwich and train) on our block.

walking by that frequently made me realize the baking/warming bread smelled too much like vomit. noticed the same at other Subways I'd walk by (sandwiches and train). nothing like the smell of vomit to induce a desire to eat those sandwiches.

and another thing- why don't they cut the bread all the way?
I find the smell off-putting as well. And Subway is definitely at the top of a list of franchises where you know exactly where you are by the smell alone.

Maybe for another thread, but what other places are like that?
The other one I can think of off the top of my head is 7-Eleven. Every 7-11 I've gone into in the last few years smells almost exactly the same and distinctly different from any other convenience store.

Never heard of Potbelly, Tubby's, Dibellas, or Penn Station. I am surprised you don't like Firehouse. What don't you like about them? Their quality of ingredients is way better than Subway but I will give you that their selection is not my ideal combination of things.

Not that it takes much but I’m confused
I think he means like a hot dog (sandwich?) bun

Or a long time ago when Subway did a V cut with the bread?
Wow I completely forgot about that lol
Don't they still do that? Tells you how long it's been since I have had Subway

I think they (probably?) still do that for subs like the meatball. For sandwiches that use deli meat I think they may just do the "hinge" cut. Maybe?

Trying to remember what I got, maybe the Steamer? Just seemed like it wasn’t a lot of meat

I do like the hot sauce bar

Also not really any locations that are convenient for me and certainly not good enough to go out of my way for.

i referenced it specifically relating to FF delis. I have about six real delis near me which i rotate. every once in a while i'll go for a jersey mikes on the app so i can grab and go.

ff delis for me in northern California:

sourdough & co: but expensive
firehouse
togos
jersey mikes
jimmy john's: but do not have any nearby
Subway: bread is fine. there was a time where all meat tasted the same.

ill edit if i can think of others

The average town in NJ has at least three delis that are way better than both of those.

this discussion reminds me when a friend of mine visited from NYC with his young daughter. she was absolutely perplexed by the lack of bodegas, taxi's and skyscrapers in town. she only knew from NYC and just assumed the rest of the country was the same.

can't throw a handful of pigeons without hitting an elite deli in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut

here most people think a deli is something you only see in the Sopranos

Yeah, I can't imagine there's a large Jewish population where you live either. There was a Jewish Deli in Jackson, MS that was otherworldly....I still dream about their Reuben.

Used to like togos and Quiznos but haven’t seen them for a while
I didn't list Quiznos because I thought they went out of business (at least they did around here). Togos is good. I would say it is on par with Firehouse but I don't have any around where I live so it doesn't jump to mind. Both are worlds better than Subway.
According to Wikipedia, Quizno's went from 4,700 stores to 145.

"Last seating at 8:15". Then lock the doors.

Yes but are there good delis right off a random freeway exit?
Used to eat Subway. Then Jersey Mikes came into our lives.
I used to eat at Subway sometimes. Then I retired . Now I eat at home.
