Can we discuss pet peeves here? (5 Viewers)

Bottles of lotion with a pump that are still 30% full but won’t pump any more out.
Preach. My shampoo is like this, and I can't even unscrew the cap to get the rest out.
The worst is when they promote like 33% more free on the bottle. They know you'll have to work for that 33%.
When I was young and broke I used to unscrew the shampoo in the store and fill them up to the brim with a second bottle and then buy them. So I may be the reason one can’t take the lid off. :oldunsure: Sorry about that

Wife and I have been having it out lately stemming from these peeves. Has a nail appointment with my daughter. Hey you have cash? Me just enough for tonight.

Well can you stop and give me yours. I asked you to get extra when you stop

I was in a mood and basically said you knew about this appointment for two weeks why did you stop to get cash

Some excuse, then says you know I always run late

Then of course I say how about you be on time for once. You are allowed to stop yourself

Fun morning
Who uses cash anymore?

Valet, restaurants, hotel staff, car service, hardware store, bars, hostesses, etc.

Hardware store?

The rest seem like tipping scenarios, but that one?

Although I guess there's Snoop and her, "You earned that buck like a mfer, man. Keep that ****." (such an awesome scene)

Smaller hardware store like ACE, I usually throw the kids a few bucks for loading my truck with mulch and lumber.

Ahhh, makes sense. The guys at our local place have always refused to take anything when helping load, so it's been a long time since I even thought about that.

Shopping a the local ACE is like going back in time. The local ag boys and girls all offer help inside and outside the store. Mr R loves that place. It's very customer friendly.

Sometimes they’re a little more expensive but everyone is willing and *gasp*, eager to assist.

They also have the odd things HD/Lowes doesn’t. Lumber is actually cheaper and better quality than HD at mine right now. It’s always been better, but usually more expensive.

Yeah, that's our Agway here (which actually recently switched to getting their hardware from Ace now). Other local stores complained when big box stores opened in our town, but Agway just differentiated themselves from the HD & Lowes that both arrived by their level of personal service. No wandering around lanes looking for help or anything like that. They are seriously helpful there, so even though there are times when one of HD/Lowes is the easy choice bc of selection, there are plenty of times when I just prefer to go to Agway.
And I agree that the service makes you want to tip (especially the young workers), but they are trained to just walk away quickly when they're done and refuse any tips, which makes me like the place even more.

That seems nuts to me. I love my local hardware store, and they have a particularly wonderful fastener section, but I would never consider them for lumber because it is like 4 times as much as the big box stores/

Asian nails

Yeah they will take card for payment but not for tips so I always have to Venmo my wife’s nail lady

“But lamb, why doesn’t your wife have her own Venmo?”

This is a good question with no good answer, although it does keep her from asking why my friends are sending me payment for Hot Rear Action or things like that (for fantasy football)

Would not patronize. Outside of tips at my son's wedding, can't tell you the last time I used cash on anything.

Went to a brewery in CO that was cash only but they had an ATM on site. Guessing there's a chance they get some ATM fees? It was fine though as it's well known that they're cash only.

Local weed store is cash only but debit card is okay.

I don’t use it too often, but I’ve been going here for years and know the drill so I always come prepared

Our kids HS football games are cash only too for entry

Funny enough I was out to dinner on Sunday when the place lost power. They were able to finish our order and would have done a manual credit card entry later but luckily I had $100 stashed for emergency so was able to cover it

All our HS sports are app only. You can't pay cash. You have to use the app to buy the tickets and then the app charges $1 per ticket on top of the charge for the ticket. It is absolutely ridiculous.

ETA: The worst part about it is that it ends up screwing the schools because the app takes most of the money. The school would get much better returns if they just handled it. However, I do understand that it then requires a school official to man the gate and handle the cash. That is the biggest draw back to the school who is already undermanned.

Exactly. I just wouldn’t go to the small niche of places that only take cash. Get with the times.

And giving tips on credit card works just fine.

Speaking of apps, needing an app for everything is starting to be a major pet peeve.

For example, an environmental club at our high school is trying to get a compost program off the ground by having a bin behind the school, which is close to our house. My wife wants to support it so she saved up all our food scraps and coffee grounds for the week and we walked over to drop them off last night. When we get there, we learned that in order to open the bin, you need to (1) download the app; (2) open an account; (3) verify your email; (4) read and agree to the rules; and (5) send a message from your phone, to space, and then to the bin 18" away to unlock it.

This whole process took 20 minutes just to walk over and dump our food scraps, and because my wife had left rice on the stove (another pet peeve - why insist on this outing when you have something on the stove?), it led to us eating burnt dinner.

one of my favorite dive bars in San Francisco is cash only with an atm on site. unfortunately, it has not been a secret for quite some time.

Seems like it's a one time thing to load/sign up for the app and now you have it, it should be a quick transaction from now on.

my kid's HS went to this model this year. very annoying.

the concession stands now also no longer take cash, but also don't take all of the various payment apps, so it's a crapshoot if you can buy anything while there. a brilliant plan.

why not just have it as open the door and dump the stuff in. App seems overkill and ridiculous.

Because they don't want random people putting crap in there that doesn't belong. If it was just open to everyone then you would end up with people dumping all their trash in the bin and ruining the whole point of having it.

Exactly this. Also now they don't have to hire people to sit there and give direction and monitor.

they have a particularly wonderful fastener section
But what is their shovel selection like

@ChiefD
It's pretty stout. Mostly good stuff. I have a rake I bought at ACE about 22 years ago still going strong. Bought a second one about 8 years ago so my wife could join the leaf raking party. That one is still like new. :<_<:

And the best part is if you are in their ACE Rewards club, you get rewards on their app and through the mail pretty consistently. One of the ones I like is the spend $100 and get $20 off. I can always find $80 of stuff I need at a hardware story. Basically I get $20 of free stuff. And on your birthday they send you a reward of just $10 of free stuff.

It's beautiful. And for those days I don't need $80, they always have a $5 off $25 purchased or something like that.

ACE is the place boys.

Also now they don't have to hire people to sit there and give direction and monitor.
They don't hire anyone to do that at HS games (at least not the HS's in this area). It's typically a teacher, coach, parent, or student that is doing this. It's not someone that they "hire" specifically for game management.

Either way, they still have to coordinate and schedule people to do this which is a pain (and non paid people are unreliable). An app removes this headache. Time is money.

But it doesn't remove the headache as you still need someone at the door checking the phones to see the tickets were purchased. It really doesn't change anything other than the handling of money.

this is a massive pet peeve of mine when trying to get in to Lambeau

no more ripping tickets, or even having someone standing there with a hand scanner, now you need to have the tickets in an app on your phone. which you then have to line up precisely with the scanner that's about waist height.

needing to have the ticket app open apparently surprises a fair number of people, who wait until they get to the ticket verification process to open the app... but they may be too drunk to operate the phone..or there are connectivity issues.. or their wife has the tickets on her phone, which is .... somewhere.

each "improvement" has vastly slowed the ingress process. especially when it's cold outside and people are pulling off gloves to access their phones at the absolute last possible second.

used to be able to pull up to Lambeau at 11:30 and be in the seats by 11:50. nearly exactly every time. now we're there at 11 - 11:15 and sitting down 3-5 minutes before kick.

Pus you don't get the actual ticket as a keepsake. When the LA Kings went to electronic tickets we had an option as season ticket holders to get printed ticket books.......but it costs extra. I actually liked the couple of years where they sent you the nice ticket books but you had the ability to do electronic tickets. It gave you a nice keepsake (if you wanted it) of a full ticket book. Some years they were really nice.

That is all gone now.

Do you work for a credit card processing company?

Or is credit card honk some new creative schtick you are trying out?

Screwed is a relative term. Uncle Sam won’t get his portion. and if the server chooses to not tip the support staff from the cash tip, that’s more money for them.

they also get the money immediately. Many restaurants pay the CC tips out Weekly

used to be able to pull up to Lambeau at 11:30 and be in the seats by 11:50. nearly exactly every time. now we're there at 11 - 11:15 and sitting down 3-5 minutes before kick.

Buddy, this is AWFUL! I bought 3 extra tix to the opening Oregon Ducks game this year using some 3rd rate website to buy tickets. Transferred them to my wife's phone since she was going to be sitting there with 2 of the kids. Figured it would all be fine. Well, getting to the stadium with 60K other people in an area of the state that's not exactly urban tends to jam up phones and so people trying to access tickets on their phones absent any connectivity means all sorts of chaos. It's awful. Bring back the option for paper tickets. Technology is not always your friend.

Oh, and we weren't getting into that game without a kindly security guard taking pity on us - one of my sons was about to cry. He saw my two tickets that I had saved to my wallet (which my wife neglected to do, but still, should have been able to access tickets we paid for) and said 'look, I believe you bought these, I'm going to let you guys on through'.

And because of this nice security guard taking pity on us and saving our day, I gave him a handshake with a $20 bill in the palm of my hand. Why? BECAUSE I STILL USE CASH, OFFDEE. IT IS STILL THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF LOVE!!!!!!!!!!111111111 I'm not bribing a security guard with an AMEX.

Screwed is a relative term. Uncle Sam won’t get his portion. and if the server chooses to not tip the support staff from the cash tip, that’s more money for them.

they also get the money immediately. Many restaurants pay the CC tips out Weekly
Well there is also the issue of the CC processing %. So either the restaurant is eating this, which sucks for them, or the server is which sucks.

When we get there, we learned that in order to open the bin, you need to (1) download the app; (2) open an account; (3) verify your email; (4) read and agree to the rules; and (5) send a message from your phone, to space, and then to the bin 18" away to unlock it.
Seems like it's a one time thing to load/sign up for the app and now you have it, it should be a quick transaction from now on.
why not just have it as open the door and dump the stuff in. App seems overkill and ridiculous.
Exactly. It says in big writing on the side "THIS IS NOT FOR TRASH! COMPOST ONLY!" If i wanted to put my garbage in there and be a Richard, I could still go through the app process.
