Had the following text exchange with Mrs. R today:
Myrna
Are you guys gonna make it Sunday? My aunt has an extra ticket
For that music thing. Did you put it on the calendar? You bought them right?
Ignatius
?????
Which music thing? Which aunt? Start from the beginning and explain what you’re talking about
M
The thing G told us about.
Did you buy the tickets?
The great advantage of texting as a communications medium is that you can avoid wasting time with all the pleasantries required in, say, a phone call, Instead, you ask a quick question, then the other person can give you a quick response when they're free, and you both can go on with your day.
So, for example, my wife could have said, "Remember the concert at the synagogue we discussed a few weeks ago? Did you ever buy those tickets?" To which I would have responded, "Yes." Done and done.
Instead, I first had to spend a couple minutes puzzling over that first text -- she only has one aunt and she lives in NYC, so why would she have tickets to a local concert in Miami? -- before realizing it was a forwarded message from her friend. Then we had a couple more texts back and forth, and I still had no idea what she was asking about. Don't make me me play 20 Questions in order to give you the info you need from me!
Oh, and while we're on the subject of my wife wasting my damn time, when she originally told me about the concert a few weeks ago, it was via a picture of the promotional poster. Because the concert is at a small venue that's not necessarily at the top of the SEO game, it took a few minutes of Googling before I could find the website to purchase the tickets. Which was especially exasperating given that the poster she snapped a pic of
had a QR code on it! If you're already taking out your camera, take a picture of the code and then send me the link
