Can we discuss pet peeves here? (1 Viewer)

I'm guessing this was Subway.

Love Subway. Steak sandwich add bacon. On Italian herbs and cheese. 😋

I’d rather eat a vending machine hamburger

Don’t get me wrong im not opposed to subway but stick to cold cuts there

I never understood Subway. Delis exist. Good delis. You can get phenomenally better sandwiches there.
I go to a Subway once a week or so, but a matter of convenience. Downstairs from my office, and usually a matter of only having time to either get Subway or some even crappier prepackaged sandwich from the grab and go inside my office (which also charges more than Subway). If they replaced the Subway with something better, I would not miss it.
we had a Subway (sandwich and train) on our block.

walking by that frequently made me realize the baking/warming bread smelled too much like vomit. noticed the same at other Subways I'd walk by (sandwiches and train). nothing like the smell of vomit to induce a desire to eat those sandwiches.

and another thing- why don't they cut the bread all the way?
To me, Subway’s bread smells like chemicals, which is vomit-inducing.

this discussion reminds me when a friend of mine visited from NYC with his young daughter. she was absolutely perplexed by the lack of bodegas, taxi's and skyscrapers in town. she only knew from NYC and just assumed the rest of the country was the same.

can't throw a handful of pigeons without hitting an elite deli in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut

here most people think a deli is something you only see in the Sopranos

Yeah, I can't imagine there's a large Jewish population where you live either. There was a Jewish Deli in Jackson, MS that was otherworldly....I still dream about their Reuben.
Jewish delis are amazing. We have Katz's, but the king champeen is Kenny and Ziggy's. Oh, the schmaltz.

We're fortunate in Houston. Besides delis, we have taco trucks and halal food trucks that are open extra hours. Also BBQ stands. I never even havve to consider Subway again.

Yes but are there good delis right off a random freeway exit?
Used to eat Subway. Then Jersey Mikes came into our lives.
The average town in NJ has at least three delis that are way better than both of those.
Well. I've lived in Georgia 4 years now and I don't think I've seen just a deli. We got plenty of barbecue joints which I can't stomach to eat. Ha ha

Head just a little north into the Carolinas. We have plenty of good BBQ joints. Not so many delis

we're lousy with Germans, Poles, Belgians. meals are measured in pounds of potato and 3rd rate cuts of meat. but there will be a lot of it, and it will be astonishingly cheap.

Just walking past a Subway reeks. Horrible place.

Definitely miss the good Queens delis here in Boise. You can find a good sandwich but most of them try to get too fancy or they cheap out with the meat. Just give me a nice ham and cheese, Roast beef or Godfather hero without aioli or greens or other crap. And can't find good semolina bread here. Too much sourdough.

I don't know if anybody else relates to this pet peeve , but it drives me nuts, so...
I drop off packages at the post office a few times a week. They're always prepaid and I have no interest in waiting in line, so I just drop them off on the counter. There's limited space on the counter - especially when it's a busy day - so I always stack my packages neatly and to the side/corner so that I leave as much room as possible for others to drop off their own packages before it gets cleared off. It seems like half the other people do the same. The other half just scatter their packages out, taking up every inch of counter space and sometimes forcing me to rearrange their packages when I get there to make enough room for mine. People...

Subway is a last resort. It is just blah and nothing of consequence. Probably the worst of all fast food sandwich places. Give me Jersey Mikes, Firehouse, or any local deli over Subway all day every day. Jimmy Johns and Subway are pretty close but I would take Jimmy Johns over Subway.
Times I eat at Subway:

1. Client is in the middle of nowhere and it's the only option
2. Airport and its the only option for the time i have
3. Road trip and its in the gas station we stop at

A good footlong at Jersey Mikes can cost $15.00 to $17.00. I start feeling guilty when I realize I could paid the same price for a large pizza and fed everybody.
Where can you get a large pizza for $17? Those are getting up to $30-$40 for good pizza places (I do not count Little Ceasars as pizza).
Really? Where are you located?

A good single topping pizza can be had for under $20 all over SE Michigan. Jets is like $15 and it's usually very good.
I live an hour north of Santa Barbara right on the coast. As I said before, my go to is a three topping pizza and that typically ups the price quite a bit from the standard cheese or one topping pizza. Chains like Little Cesars, Dominos, or Pizza Hut are in the range you speak of but go to a local pizza place or a better chain (we have a few around that are chains but not big chains) and the price goes up quite a bit. I was shocked the last few times we got pizza because I was expecting the in the $20-$25 range and it was in the $30-$40 range. Then I looked around and all the solid places were about the same. It's crazy but true.
Little Caesars all over my area......it's their home. You can still get a pepperoni pizza for $7 there.

As far as more upscale pizzerias around, still not any in the $30-$40 range. $20-$30 is possible for a multi-topping pie.
My wife and I just got a large (15") pep last week from one of the best locations in metro Detroit and it was $19.

I'm sure the prices fluctuate based on where you are nationally. $40 is crazy!

Jimmie Johns is lightyears better than Subway.
It's better.........but still light years behind Jersey Mikes or Firehouse.
Jersey Mikes, yes. I'm not a big fan of Firehouse. Though, to be fair, I think I've only had it once.
Firehouse is mid. I’d rather have subway
That is just flat wrong. Subway is flavorless meat product with no pizazz.
To be fair I’ve only had firehouse maybe 2 times, once was probably 10 years ago and then a couple months ago. I was quite disappointed. Can’t see myself willingly going there ever again

I also feel like subway is just cool to hate on. It’s not great but at least I know what im getting when I I go there

Top 3 for me in Michigan would be

1. Jersey Mikes - excels in both hot and cold subs. Never had a bad experience here

2. Potbelly - more limited menu, no cold options (I don’t think they do anyway)

3. Tubbys - usually getting a steak and cheese variant here

I’d probably put Dibellas #1 but they closed all other locations besides Ann Arbor

Next up I’d probably go
Jimmy johns
Subway
Penn station
Firehouse

I’m sure im missing one
Never tried it, but also didn't realize they closed all of them.

Listen, I like Jersey Mikes too but their prices are even crazier than Subways. I get some people don't mind paying extra if the food is better and the food is better. I was able to get a $6.00 footlong steak sandwich at Subway last week with a coupon.

A good footlong at Jersey Mikes can cost $15.00 to $17.00. I start feeling guilty when I realize I could have paid the same price for a large pizza and fed everybody.
Yeah, I don’t get the jersey mikes love to be honest. Ok at best imo
It's more of a comparative thing. For fast foods subs it is by far the best. The quality is always the same at any franchise you go to and is all fresh with quality meats/cheeses. Will an actual deli be better? Most likely but for a mass produced type franchise it is by far the best of the ff sandwich places. My favorite is the Giant 99 on Rosemary. Eat half one day and have the other half the next. Solid two meals.
Used to like togos and Quiznos but haven’t seen them for a while
I didn't list Quiznos because I thought they went out of business (at least they did around here). Togos is good. I would say it is on par with Firehouse but I don't have any around where I live so it doesn't jump to mind. Both are worlds better than Subway.
According to Wikipedia, Quizno's went from 4,700 stores to 145.
I went on a field trip years ago with a dad who owned a Quiznos. He said they forced owners to reduce the quantity of meat on their sandwiches AND started to supply far inferior quality meats. He asked if he could pay a premium to keep the higher quality meats and was declined.

He ended up closing about a year later.

That confused me for a second since we have a DiBella's in town and I just got a sub there last week, but then realized you guys were talking Michigan. There are still a bunch of others, mostly in NY and Ohio. And yeah, they're good.

Ordered my kids a jumbo sized pie from Godfathers' - half cheese, half pepperoni. And monkey bread. $44 before the tip. That's insane.

Separately, my wife's parents live in Lake Orion and we went out for pizza downtown LO at 313 Pizza Bar. Dude, they have a Dill Pickle pizza and it might be in my top 5 of best, must unusual pizzas I've ever tried. It's enough to get me to go back to Michigan again and I'm not joking. I would never have ordered it on my own, but my SIL got it for the table and man, it was so good!

Oh come on guys I bet I could grab a footlong from subway rewrap it in plain butcher paper and tell you it’s from Vito’s and you’d all rave about how good it was

Dude, have you examined the meat of the Cold Cut Combo up close? It looks like Danny Trejo's face.
I almost exclusively get the spicy Italian from there, especially since they got rid of the seafood and krab

My friend Bob Nugon got food poisoning so bad off a Subway tuna sub he had to go to the hospital. This was in 1995. Never once considered a Subway 'seafood' item after that.

One of my pet peeves is sandwich shops not cutting all the way through when they cut a footlong into two pieces. Maybe Subway should use a machete.

I typically won’t do tuna subs because I like my tuna to just be tuna, mayo, salt and pepper…..maybe some capers or pickle juice or dill but definitely no celery or onions or anything like that.

As I've gotten older, I like a little-like a tiny bit- of mustard on it, along with cheddar.

The only way I'll eat tuna is straight outta the can with some salt for taste. When I was working out regularly, I'd eat a can or so a week.

Edit - actually, now that I think about it... I used to throw some in my mac n' cheese too. That's an underrated combo.

Cheddar is a good addition. I also like a little sliced onion to give it a little crunch.

I always mix in some mustard with the mayo when I make tuna salad. Not even just a tiny bit.
Celery and scallions too.

if it's Bob it is always Sacamano. There are no other imaginary Bob's that would have a story like that.

Oh, if you meet Bob Nugon, you'll understand completely. He's 1 of 1 and not always in a good way.

Places that give you a means of communication, but then ignore you when you use it. Spent the last few nights in a hotel in Georgia. The first day my room didn't get serviced. (I don't care if beds get made but I needed trash emptied and TP restocked). Called the front desk, they promised that it would be serviced the next day if I hung the placard on the side that said "Please Service" (and the reverse side said Do Not Disturb). Found the placard, hung it as instructed. Next day, no service. Called front desk, they said sorry, be sure to use the placard. I again said I did. Last day, I slept in before my flight, checked out around ~9:30 and ran into the cleaners buzzing around the hall. I asked why my room didn't get serviced according to the placard on the door. She says "oh we don't go by what the tag says, people don't realize they say different things on each side so they just hang a tag to mean Do Not Disturb so if we see a tag at all we skip that room".

If the tag has different instructions on each side, then you should follow what the tag says. Or tell the front desk to quit instructing people to use the thing. If you're treating the tag to only mean Do Not Disturb, then throw those tags away and just give us tags that only say DND. Ugh.
I've been to places in other countries that - instead of having those stupid cards - have a button just inside of the door that you can set to either red (do not disturb) or green (service the room) and there's a light outside that shows the color you've selected so staff know what's up.

They had these at a fairly swanky hotel in Boston that I stayed at a couple months ago. First time I'd seen it in all of my domestic travel, but then again I tend to gravitate to the Courtyard by Marriott type of property due to where I travel for work.

Maybe it's just me, but those freaking door-handle cards drive me nuts. They'll fall off or get turned around "by accident". The red/green light system seems to work much better.

I can relate. Happened to me in 2015. Have not been to a subway since.
