Car Market going forward (2 Viewers)

We have narrowed it down to 3 vehicles for my wife. We are slow rolling it and being patient. Weird time to buy a new car. Will purchase one of these this month.

2025 Honda HRV Sport. CRVs are just boxy and tank like. HRV is sharp. 1% interest for 3 years.

2025 Mazda CX5 Carbon Edition. I really liked the way it drives.

2025 Toyota Rav4 XLE. Most expensive of the 3. Prolly the better car.
We looked at and liked all 3 of these in our search. Only the RAV4 comfortably fit me and an infant carseat behind me. If not for that criteria, we'd have just gone with whichever was cheapest I think.
That's where we are. We are slowing playing the 3 dealerships to see which offers the best deal in the end. So u did purchase the RAV4? If so, still like it after some time?
We ended up with Toyota's Crown Signia. Much bigger inside than the RAV4 and much better gas mileage. By the time you do the trim and features we want, pricing was somewhat close too. Crown Signia has more pickup too - which my wife strongly preferred for merging onto the highway. Finally, it has a way to start it remotely, which in TX when it has to be parked outside or getting groceries and its 100, is really nice to get the AC going for 10 mins before you need it, especially with babies.

We were basically in a tough decision to either spend WAY more for a Lexus RX350 or go with the sensible RAV4, but the Crown Signia was released to the market like a month before we would make our final decision. It was basically everything we preferred about the Lexus, but for $12k less money.

Never actually heard of the Signia. You sent me down a rabbit hole. The inside of these is spectacular. I really like this. Just a little to big for what my wife wants. Little more then we are wanting to spend also. I like how they call it a Lexus for penny pinchers. Ha ha

Your post lead me down a rabbit hole and came across the Chevy Trax. Never heard of this. Top model fully loaded is 35 grand. They review well and look sharp. Wife prefers suvs they drive closer to cars. Think I'm gonna find one and drive today. Like I said, we are slow rolling this purchase and being patient.

I've never been in a Trax, but I think they are pretty small. The originally released in the Mini-utility segment and then were reclassified into the Small utility group. It was well recieved at launch.

I wouldn't buy a Ford. My youngest daughter has a 2016 Edge and the engine was replaced at 60,000 miles
Dozens of other little things too. Molding stips coming off. Seal around door leaking. Brakes don't last.
Their quality has gone way down.

I have a 2014 Durango that has been the best car I've ever owned. Last year they were part of Mercedes and it shows.
167,000 and has original brakes. ZF trans is easily the best I have driven.

However, I feel like I'm on borrowed time with it. Been looking at going a bit smaller now that my girls are adults.

I feel like now may be a good time to move on from it.
Dodge was acquired by Cerebus in 2007. I liked the old body style Durango that ended around 2003.
The 2014 Durango shares the same platform as the Mercedes GL class.

Yeah I mean the Lexus comp is so true. It met like every single benefit the Lexus had over the RAV4, but it was priced just barely above the highest trim of RAV4. We're really glad it came out because we didn't really want to go over $50k and the Lexus was gonna be 60. The RAV4 we had become pretty set on was like $44k I think and we got this for just a little over that.

It's huge inside. That was the biggest driver for us. Driving it, doesn't really feel that big - I have a Lucid Air, and that car feels HUGE when I drive and park it. The Signia feels more like our old cars, the Forester and Cross Trek.

Which, now I think of it - based on what you've described, your wife may really like a Cross Trek. It was a phenomenal car for us, we would not have sold ours if it was big enough inside for our double carseats plus me being tall conundrum. Drives a LOT like a normal car, but has that small SUV feel. Extremely reliable too.

After further review of the Trax turbo charged 3 cylinder 1.2 liter engine I'm out. Ha ha. Wife will be in interstate a lot. 3 cylinder? Pass.

I really appreciate your feedback. That Cross Trek is just a wonderful looking vehicle. Damn. Just scheduled a test drive for later today. I hate car shopping. Been scouring relentlessly. Initial deep dive into this Cross Trek made my heart skip. Can't explain enough how different I felt about this car right out of the research gate compared to others I have looked at. Ha ha.

We bought a CPO 24 crv sport hybrid for the wife. We love it. We found the exteriors of the Toyota’s were sexier but the Honda interiors were vastly superior.

We took about two months, 2 days where we did a test drive of basically every vehicle in the size class, and then narrowed down, did some emailing with offers and playing dealers off each other, really took our time. Narrowed list, narrowed list, then found the top two and hit any dealer within 3 hours via email with a time we would buy the car, the specs we wanted, and an ask for their best offer. And told them we emailed every dealer within 3 hours of Dallas because we didn't mind driving to get it.

Got offers back, took the final three, told them the best offer (which I made up a little lower) and that we were driving Saturday to buy it at that price. Had some back and forth with a couple Th/F, and got the lowest price yet Saturday morning. Went and got the car.

I've got a 2017 Crosstrek, fun little car that has been passed around my family and pretty dependable. I use it as a daily beater to save a little gas and wear and tear compared to our main car. My in-laws bought a new Crosstrek last year and are big fans of it as well.

We really liked the Honda HRV. Little smaller then your CRV. Wife prefers more car like. We were juuuuust about to pull trigger until this Subaru Crosstrek came into my mindset. Already been speaking to rep there. They already knocked off 1000 and I havent driven it yet. Test drive scheduled later today. We are notorious gambling impluse people. Have bought a house in an city 48 hours after being there for the first time. We are really displaying patience here.

Got my wife a cross trek about a year and a half ago and we still love it everyday. Zero issues, and already nearly 20k miles on it. They even make it easy to change the oil on your own with the oil filter up top, rather than underneath the car.

We bought a CPO 24 crv sport hybrid for the wife. We love it. We found the exteriors of the Toyota’s were sexier but the Honda interiors were vastly superior.

If serious - get the bigger engine (2.5 liter). That extra 30 horses makes a difference.

Yes sir. I think the Limited package all come with the 2.5. Definitely will make sure of that . I know I just want the upper tier package loaded with everything. That Wilderness package ain't my jam. Ha ha

Twice a year? What the...

I know. 12.4 miles from work. Average commute is an hour fifteen.

Stop and go+under powered brakes +heavy vehicle+ wife who literally plays Ludacris’ “MOVE!” = twice a year.

I’ve stopped telling her it isn’t normal.

I don't know if you bought the Crosstrek or not, I have owned 3 Subaru with 2 of them parked in my driveway and the 3rd now belongs to my MIL
Never had a Crosstrek but I've had both the Forrester and Outback, they're great cars and your price of ownership is where the big value is
They tend to retain their value

You had mentioned some other vehicles, the Rav4 to my knowledge sells more than any other SUV on the market
Good luck getting a new Crosstrek

No ****ing chance I could ever do this. My god

Thanks for the response. Haven't made purchase yet. Going to test drive the Subaru on an hour or so. I'm really looking for something that fits all my wife's needs and although would prefer cost efficiency don't mind spending a little more if I need to. Which is why the RAV4 is still in the picture for us. She really loved it. We are now down to 4 vehicles and the RAV4 is one of those 4 and definitely the highest cost. I really feel this Subaru is gonna hit with her. Time will tell though. I also haven't heard anything bad from someone that owns a Subaru. Most just love the.. One a side note, I discovered 44% of Subarus are made in America. Ha ha

Where is this? I’m in SoCal and this would be considered really bad by our standards.

best part of my brother-in-law owning a subaru is that I can send him endless instagram meme's. Second best is the safety rating for my sister and niece but I do love sending him all the subaru ****

Also dipping toe in the car market and starting research on very similar models (we drive them til they die so longevity is important). The one thing I keep reading about Subarus are the CVT transmissions. Seems to be on older models, but it's a 'known thing'. Apparently not a big deal as long as you always set your parking brake. I'm sure MOP or other owners can debunk/elaborate

Knew nothing about this until now. Guess it was a legit issue on 2010 to 2018 models. I guess they have improved its cvt tech drastically. Just what I'm reading. Good post though. Something I'm gonna bring up to look smart when talking to dealer.

Hmm, my son loves his 2024 CR-V and the HR-V was just too small. I agreed with him when we saw both together. He even drove some RAV4s but he was able to get an almost new CR-V with everything in it and only 9k miles at Carmax for cheaper than a less equipped RAV4. He also liked the Honda better, maybe because he’d been driving his grandfather’s 2011 CR-V for years. He got lucky that a new one in his paint color preference came in with everything he wanted but $1k less so he jumped on it.

Well. Just got done test driving the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. Cross that off the list. It was cute. Just felt more like a car for my 18 year old daughter not my 50 year old wife. Imo

What I liked: Sporty. Handled the road well. Maneuverable. Crazy fancy touch screen. Lots of cool stuff in the cab. Very modern inside and pretty sharp on the outside

What I didn't like: ZERO giddy up. Was just shocked at this 2.5 liters lack of zip. Just too small. Felt tight inside. Although it was nice and filled with cool features on the inside it just felt so tight I don't think we ever would of settled into it.

Live in Florida, flat as a pancake and yet I do tend to use the parking brake when I shut the car off, Mrs likes to rib me about it.

-CVT transmissions have not given us an issue thus far

So many cars have lost their pep. I’m driving a dog of an Explorer right now with the base 2.3 engine. My daughter has a 3 cylinder Bronco Sport that is fine unless you punch the gas. I had a 24 hybrid Maverick that had good acceleration. If you want torque, you need to go EV.

new vehicle inventroy is dropping

Inventroy is going to start to dry up at Toyota stores first, I'd guess Hyundai/Kia would be next followed by Honda. Couple luxury OEMs have stopped shipping.

April will be a fantastic sales month. May is a coin flip. June will see higher pricing and some models may not be available.

It's hard to squeeze performance and economy out of ICE vehicles. MPG standards keep going up, so we get fewer cylinders, less cubic inches, but turbos and superchargers to try and make up the HP. It was pretty eye-opening to see all those 3 cylinder cars on the market. Gave me nigtmare flashbacks to some of the fuel efficient cars I had when I was younger that couldn't reach freeway speeds by the end of the ramp, or lost speed going up hills. At least the newer cars aren't *that* bad.

That is one reason that we went with the Rav4 Hybrid over similar only gas models or things in that class. They all felt much more sluggish on acceleration, particularly the Rav4 gas.

Co-worker just had his 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 6.2L with 75,000 miles blow the engine. It's seized up and a new engine is $10,900.

The 2014 Durango shares the same platform as Jeep Grand Cherokee and was built in the same factory.
Not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing. And I live about 10 minutes from where they were assembled.

The 2014 Dodge Durango does share the same basic platform as the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. This platform was developed during the DaimlerChrysler (Mercedes-Chrysler) partnership before they split. The Durango also shares a similar platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is a shorter version of the GL-Class platform

In Japan Subaru offers the Levorg which is essentially an Impreza WRX wagon. Since 2016, Subaru builds everything they make on a single platform which they call their SGP or Subaru Global Platform. This means that every single vehicle they produce is built on one platform. For the life of me, I really don't understand why Subaru does not build some variant of a Crosstrek with the WRX engine stuffed into it and call it a Crosstrek XT, perhaps even offer a manual transmission with it and maybe offer a handling package, manual transmission, turbo version called the Crosstrek WRX? Honestly, I think it would sell over here because your experience is very typical of what I hear my friends and co-workers say when they've test driven the Crosstrek. Neat car, loved everything about it, but it needs more power as it's gutless. A turbo would solve this problem. Probably has something to do with Cafe regulations, I'm sure.

My Forrester is a 2016/2017 XT Touring and they only put the WRX engine in them for 2 years, I scooped one up
3 different transmission speeds, Shark mode with paddle shifters off the line at a red light, very few can keep up...just don't turn the car in any direction, pure straight line speed.

Crosstrek is a slow car but very practical for a lot of folks, agree with you that it does not have a lot of pick up in it

That’s why I said to at least get the 2.5L. I idea how they are selling any of those 2.0. Works well for my 40 year old wife, and crazily enough for my 70 year old father as a “knock around town car” for him - of course he also has a Lexus sedan with a v8 for road trips (and speeding tickets!)

Everyone is in too much damn hurry. Why do we need all these cars that can go 0-60 in 2 seconds or top out at 150 mph. It's dumb
Well. I don't need 0 to 60 in 2 seconds, but 0 to 60 in 8 seconds is nice. If it was just a car around town then I completely agree with u, but we do a lot of interstate driving. I need some power. A little.

I drove one and I thought it was plenty quick enough for what it was. It’s not a sports car. It’s a practical car.

The only thing I don’t love are the over exaggerated plastic over the fenders but if just get a black one .

I mean I do kind of need it to go from 35-70 by the time the ramp ends so i can effectively merge. I don't need it to go 0-60 in 2 seconds but I do need to not be a hazard entering the highway. Which I do multiple times a day like every day.

As a guy who changes his wife’s 2010 brakes twice a year -I can confirm - The calipers/brake system on the ford edges are undersized. I looked into upgrading and it was cost prohibitive.

We have also replaced the engine, transfer case and a few other items. With all its problems it’s still a beast of a vehicle. Plenty of power, AWD, roomy compared to all others in its class.

It’s paid off and she loves it still so I’ll keep fixing it.
This has to be hyperbole - my 20 year old car has needed exactly one brake job. Are there really vehicles which require this much maintenance?

ETA NM, I see @the moops is on it. But that is completely ridiculous
