Classic movies to watch with the kids during the pandemic (1 Viewer)

Goonies is great as well. Should be okay for a ten year old I think. Some sketchy parts (my mom's most favorite piece!, I'll cut out your tongue!, blender and puke scene, etc.).

BTW, I'm a little jealous. With my kids' ages i'm subject to the like of Paw Patrol, Ryan, Frozens 1 and 2, Doc McStuffins, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, etc. on the daily. It's a win if I can convince them to watch something like Wall-E or Moana.

I liked it as a kid.
To be fair, I don't think I ever saw it as a kid even though I saw the original a million times.  Or maybe I did, but was 18 by then and didn't like it.

Either way, I did watch it with my own kid years ago (she's 20 now) and we both thought it was really, really bad compared to the original.

Another couple that the kids liked...

Journey to the center of the earth (will Ferrell.. a little mature with some of the humor- but fun. Wife and I maybe laughed more than the kids)

Journey 2 to some island...mysterious? (The rock...and maybe Michael Caine?...less mature, but fun)

We've been doing this for a little while. My wife, two daugthers (13 & 15) and myself. We each take turns and have a running list of our ratings. (You cant vote for your own movie) The idea is to get them to watch movies they wouldn't normally watch or be exposed to. The girls still get to watch their Halmark/Disney crap and mom throws in the good movies. My girls a re a little older than yours so I've been picking all action and semi scary stuff.  (Terminator 1, 2, Aliens were my last three).

I hate to admit this but even I must admit that so far Pretty Woman has been hands down the best movie. Its a perfect movie. I forgot how slow Aliens was for the first 1/2 of the movie.

Biggest change in movie we have noticed from older to new is the beginnings. All the movies made pre 2000 have incredibly long and often slow beginnings with credits sometimes taking up the first several minutes.

Uncle Buck is a good one.  My daughter liked it last at 9 years old and watched it a few times.   I was watching Rocky last week and she sat down and finished watching the last 3/4 of the movie.   Seemed odd that she would like it but I’m guessing she was interested because it was so different than anything she had ever seen.

My son just turned 4 and same. Also stupid stuff like Fireman Sam and Titipo that I can’t even begin to describe.

I tried Space Jam for something different the other day, but he yelled at me to turn it off. Easier to just give in and go to the old tried and true so I can get some work done or do a conference call without him screaming at me.

The last month has basically been Netflix/Prime/Disney+ parenting my child while we try to work.

Some great ones mentioned already.

Here are some other "classics" I plan to force the kids to watch in the near future:
Clash of the Titans (80's)
Flash Gordon
Time Bandits
Planet of the Apes (60's)

Clash is a good one, can’t remember if I’ve tried to get them to watch that one before. I know the effects are going to seem horribly dated.  Might try that one tomorrow

I always liked Beastmaster too, might have to get that one going too

Jesus. I must've watched that 20 times by the time I turned 16. Loved that movie (especially the soundtrack  :headbang: ). But no way I'd let my kids watch it before at least the age of 10.
Mine are 7 8 and 11.  A little gorier than I remembered but nothing too bad

Me too, but I think Beastmaster might be too dark/graphic for my 10 year old daughter, if I'm remember correctly.

Break out the shrooms with them for this one.
Terry Gilliam FTW. Time Bandits, Brazil, the Monty Python movies, 12 Monkeys and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas are all spectacularly enhanced by mind-altering substances.  Or so I've heard.

Come to think of it, Holy Grail might be a good one for the kiddos...

Has anyone else seen this ‘Project 88’ craziness? Apparently, some filmmaker remade Back to the Future II by piecing together 88 different scenes submitted by fans all over the world. Everyone who wanted to participate was assigned a particular segment around a minute long and had one week to recreate that scene shot for shot.

The variety of styles is amazing. Some of it is REALLY good, and the rest is just plain fun to watch. I opened it up to take a quick look, and I ended up watching the whole thing with my six year old.

We watched Clue recently...both kids (12yo son, 8yo daughter) enjoyed it.
Took my kids (13 & 11) to see "Knives Out" and they liked it so I thought they might like "Clue".  Didn't get through the first 15 minutes, too slow with no action.  Although I had to skip ahead to show them the singing telegram and they thought that was funny.  Have you / they seen "Knives Out"?

We all watched the John Wick Trilogy a couple of weeks ago.  Father of the year here, I know.

I love old SciFi and talked my wife (then girlfriend) into watching PotA with me years ago.  I must have picked it up at different parts in the past and didn't see the beginning.  The first 15 minutes are the crashed astronauts just wondering around.  My wife was bored and out before anything started to happen.  Get ready to FF if the natives get restless.

I think I introduced my daughter to the Holy Grail around age 10.  We've probably watched it together 20 times since then.

She also really liked the Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes movies starting at about age 12.

Most of the Pixar movies, esp Monsters Inc (not U), Up, the Toy Storys, Incredibles, Cars, Nemo. If you can get a copy of the Pixar shorts (the little cartoon before each movie), there's some great ones in there also. Not really "movies", but collectively there's a couple movies worth of time

We started with Knives Out before the covid, which they liked. 12yo wanted more who-dunnits, and Clue was the first follow-up.

Funny...8yo floppinha specifically said she preferred clue because there was "more action", which I took as quicker pacing.

Going with Back to the Future next, followed by Karate Kid. I figure those will round out a pretty awesome foursome after we did Goonies and Gremlins.

Will have to revisit the thread after that.

Especially with Karate Kid, your choices could also serve as a great teaching moment about just how bad sequels can get.   If she loves the first one just pop in Part 3 or that Hillary Swank abomination.
