EDIT: Chanelling Gilda Radner's Emily Litella, NEVER MIND.PFT Live: Browns talk with Mary Kay Cabot, your questions
Posted by Darin Gantt on March 21, 2014, 11:33 AM EDT
The Browns have been among the busiest teams in the NFL this offseason, changing front offices, coaches, and many, many players.
They’ve yet to participate in the game of backup quarterback musical chairs, adding to the perception they’re looking for a new starter with the fourth pick in the draft, to further the rebranding.
On Friday’s PFT Live, we’ll be putting a bow on the week that was in the NFL, and talking about their offseason.
Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer will join Mike Florio to talk about how the additions of wide receiver Andrew Hawkins and running back Ben Tate might transform the offense, and how they’ll impact future decisions.
Florio will also take your calls and tweets with questions on the burning football issues of the day, which beats watching the unpaid interns of the nation’s colleges throwing a ball in a hoop.
You can watch it all live at noon ET by clicking right here.
I am not concerned with just about anyone with the #4 pick because I think whoever we get and whatever direction we go with that pick that they will be a blue-chip prospect. I can more than live with OT Greg Robinson if he's the guy we wind up with at #4 but I don't like the idea of LB Ryan Shazier at #26.Tony Grossi's Mock Draft 5.0: Stunning development at No. 4 for BrownsMar 21, 2014 -- 6:00am
By Tony Grossi |
The Browns’ new football operations chiefs GM Ray Farmer and coach Ray Pettine have been unorthodox, to say the least, in the way they have scouted quarterbacks.
They didn’t interview any of the top prospects at the Combine.
They shunned the pro days of Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles (Johnny Manziel’s pro day is March 27).
And they refused to say why.
Are they being overly coy? Are they being derelict? Or have they simply moved beyond taking a quarterback in the first round of the draft?
Our mock draft 5.0 agrees with the last point.
1. Houston: QB Blake Bortles, Central Florida
His pro day workout secured the top spot.
2. St. Louis: DE Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina
It’s becoming obvious the Rams would love to trade down.
3. Jacksonville: QB Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M
No way they take an OT two years in a row, right?
4. Cleveland: OT-OG Greg Robinson, Auburn
Future franchise tackle, present franchise guard?
5. Oakland: WR Sammy Watkins, Clemson
Raiders’ starting QB will come from free agency.
6. Atlanta: LB Khalil Mack, Buffalo
Another addition to a revamped defensive front seven.
7. Tampa Bay: WR Mike Evans, Texas A&M
Teams with Vincent Jackson to give new QB Josh McCown a dual threat.
8. Minnesota: QB Derek Carr, Fresno State
Displaces Bridgewater as the No. 3 QB in the draft.
9. Buffalo: OT Jake Matthews, Texas A&M
Head coach Doug Marrone is a former O-line coach, remember.
10. Detroit: CB Darqueze Dennard, Michigan State
Don’t overthink it.
11. Tennessee: LB Anthony Barr, UCLA
Defensive coordinator Ray Horton starts a new rebuilding project.
12. N.Y. Giants: OT Taylor Lewan, Michigan
Eli Manning really needs this pick.
13. St. Louis: WR Marqise Lee, Southern California
Help the quarterback, Rams.
14. Chicago: S Calvin Pryor, Louisville
Free agency focused on the front seven.
15. Pittsburgh: WR Odell Beckham, Louisiana State
Big Ben needs somebody to throw to besides Antonio Brown.
16. Dallas: DT Aaron Donald, Pittsburgh
Best available, meet biggest need.
17. Baltimore: S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Alabama
Signing of Steve Smith clinches defensive choice here.
18. NY Jets: TE Eric Ebron, North Carolina
This would be a great pickup for Geno Smith.
19. Miami: LB C.J. Mosley, Alabama
Dolphins need help at this position.
20. Arizona: DE Kony Ealy, Missouri
Cardinals roster is pretty darn competitive.
21. Green Bay: DT Louis Nix, Notre Dame
Need + best available = bulls-eye.
22. Philadelphia: CB Justin Gilbert, Oklahoma State
Eagles wouldn’t have to rush him in.
23. Kansas City: WR Kelvin Benjamin, Florida State
Is he too tall for Andy Reid?
24. Cincinnati: DE Dee Ford, Auburn
I keep coming back to this pick.
25. San Diego: CB Bradley Roby, Ohio State
Another need pick falls in line.
26. Cleveland: LB Ryan Shazier, Ohio State
For the second week in a row, the Buckeye is the choice.
Do you still think we go Watkins if he's there at 4?All the Browns insiders are slowly hopping on the Soulfly Train.

Better than this Grossman talk I am hearing. I honestly didn't even realize Grossman was still in the NFL. Or is he?? Coming out of retirement or something?? I have no idea, but I hope he isn't a Brown.........ever.Sanchez? seriously?
no way that happens.

Sanchez I wouldnt mind if he came cheap as a backup. But yeah, I kinda doubt he ends up here.
Three mentions of Bruddah Iz in the first three sentences got me curios so I looked him up.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- As he sat in his office earlier this week, Rex Ryan received a text message from an old friend. It was actually a photo of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole –- aka Bruddah Iz, the late Hawaiian singer-songwriter. The New York Jets head coach laughed.
The text came from his former defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine, who now holds the same title with the Buffalo Bills. Ryan and Pettine used to listen to Bruddah Iz’s music during their long nights of game planning at the Jets’ facility. Pettine was so into Iz that he owned a book about him and made T-shirts.
You might say Ryan and Pettine were the Wizards of Iz, because those brainstorming sessions produced four seasons of terrific defense.
if they are in love with a QB, it's possible. but not very likely, imo.I suggested this on our thread.
What do you guys think?
Drop back with Cleveland for their 26th spot.
Dallas gets #26, #71 and #99 for #16
I think Cleveland goes Mack or Watkins at their #4. Bridgewater will drop because of his bad pro day and the Browns could get a QB/WR combo with this trade.
Most people think the opposite: that Rex stuck with Sanchez for too long.Sanchez could benefit from a fresh start. I think he got jerked around a fair amount by the jets.
I get the feeling these guys don't want to trade up, I am perfectly OK with that.I suggested this on our thread.

I still view Bridgewater as the top quarterback in this draft class, but he has failed to generate excitement among the personnel executives I've talked to. If he falls past the Titans at pick No. 11, I think it's realistic he could slide all the way down to this spot.
27. New Orleans :

I think this is a Cowboy fan wet dream. Don't blame them for making up scenarios that would favor their team. But I don't see any way or reason for this to happen.BigDave said:I suggested this on our thread.

Agreed, it's just a pipedream. No way are they giving up that kind of a haul in this deep of a draft. If I am looking at this right that would be our 1st 3rd and 4th rd. picks to move up 10 spots in the 2nd half of the 1st rd. I see viable starting role players through the 4th round.I think this is a Cowboy fan wet dream. Don't blame them for making up scenarios that would favor their team. Roto World picked up on the CJ blurb.Hey, Mary Kay: Chris Faulk, Dion Lewis, Quentin Groves, Brian Hoyer. Are they progressing with their rehab? Will they be ready by Spring? By Summer? By Fall?
- J. Vohler, Powell, Ohio
Hey J.: All are coming along well, with some even ahead of schedule. Hoyer expects to be participating in organized team activities in May. You forgot to mention receivers Travis Benjamin and Charles Johnson, who are also coming off torn ACLs and hope to be ready by training camp. Desmond Bryant has also been cleared for full action from his heart ablation (to correct an irregular beat). If all of these players come back, it will provide an infusion of good talent.
To refresh anyoe who had forgotten who this kid was/is. Johnson is an athletic freak who we picked up off of the Packers practice squad but it was discovered he had a partially torn ACL so we never got a peek of him last year.Charles Johnson | Wide Receiver
Team: Cleveland Browns Age / DOB: (25) / 2/27/1989 Ht / Wt: 6'2' / 215Browns WR Charles Johnson (knee) is expected to be ready for training camp.
Johnson was signed off the Packers' practice squad in October. When given his physical, the Browns discovered he had a torn ACL. The 2013 seventh-rounder passes the eye test at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds with 4.38 wheels. With nothing set in stone behind Josh Gordon and Andrew Hawkins on the receiver depth chart, Johnson could be a player to monitor again this summer. Mar 23 - 11:37 AM
Even though I'm typically not interested in free agent prospects of any kind. Have to confess that I'm actually pretty excited about these two guys.Hey Tony: I’d like to know if there is any possibility that Chris Faulk will be in the mix for a starting offensive line slot. What is his health status? I’ve noticed that he’s on the roster now. I also wonder if there is any hope regarding Jamoris Slaughter. Once they placed them on injured reserve, nothing has been mentioned about them. Faulk was projected as having first round ability before he was injured. Ditto for Slaughter. It would help the Browns substantially if both of these guys could compete for a roster slot. Please advise us of their current status,
-- Carl Noll, Fairfield, CT
Hey Carl: Faulk was highly thought of by the previous regime and probably would have competed for the starting right tackle spot this season. I’m not sure what the current regime thinks of him. Slaughter was not on injured reserve, but rather cut and then re-signed to the practice squad. I believe he was re-signed for 2014, but the Browns have not made that clear. Slaughter was never considered a potential first-round pick – even before his Achilles tendon injury at Notre Dame.
This has been my prediction. Not 100% confident in it but it's possible. Draft watkins #4 and insurance at Qb in the 3rd round.Absolute Rumor:
But could there be truth?
Apparently Darth Hoodie gave a "vote of confidence" to the Browns brass, that Hoyer is a starting caliber QB - which set the wheels in motion of the proposed lack of perusal of an early QB. (along w their own analysis)
Belichick also sent Haslam down to interview Schiano for the head coach position so even if this 'rumor' turns out to be true I think its a very-nice gesture by Bill but I don't give it too much weight.Absolute Rumor:

Don't know if your familiar with Bret Sobelski (aka Sobodawg) from the obr report. Interesting guy who evaluates talent accordingly and has worked his way into a paid gig with USA today. But he states that Faulk and Gilkey are not good candidates for the ZBS blocking scheme being implemented by Shanny. The ZBS scheme relies more on fluid and athletic lineman as opposed to Norv's straight ahead power blocking scheme with which Faulk and Gilkey identify more with.Bracie Smathers said:Mary Kay Cabot was asked about some of the players on the mend.
Good to see updates on some of these guys because I think its 'possible' that someone like OT Faulk or WR Charles Johnson might not only make the team but Doug Dieken has said he wouldn't be suprised if Faulk was in the running for a starting guard job.
I have always been intriuged with WR Charles Johnson.

Everyone?I was in the draft thread the day of the draft stating I'd burn all of my Browns gear if they took Weeden in theeveryone here wanted to fight me for calling weeden a train wreck. It was baffling.I was just sitting here bored at work, and a PTSD moment hit me when I was looking at having picks 4 and 26, thinking back to the draft a couple years ago and how we had better draft picks than any other team and still managed to royally flub the draft by taking a ####### RB in the top 3 and a 28 year old QB in the first round.
Pretty clearly two picks made by idiots who were just trying to keep their jobs. Easily the most ticked off I had ever been (and probably will ever be) watching a draft.
PLease tell me NOBODY on this forum actually liked that draft as it unfolded. For the love of god. If you did, please let me know, and I will make sure to disregard everything you say from now till the end of time.............![]()
