Cleveland Browns (6 Viewers)

One thing those stats Bracie posted don't reflect is how many should-have-been picks Brian got away with early in the season. It seemed like he was exceptionally fortunate in that regard during the first half..

Still, I think the vet probably gives us a slightly better chance for now. I don't really think we're making the playoffs with either guy, but we're still close enough that the team can't throw in the towel yet., So I think they still need to go with the veteran Hoyer. If we fall much further out of it, turn the reins over to Johnny.

So what is the mood in Cleveland?

Isn't Hoyer a local guy? And yet the mood is what % Manziel, like 75% of Browns fans in favor of making the switch?

Not sure where you're getting that from.
From sports radio yesterday, a Cleveland reporter (forget the name) on a national show, while driving around. It was a question, not a statement. This guy said that Hoyer had a small group of local fan but that most were in favor of the switch. Is that true? Just asking what the fans are saying and if there's local pressure to make the switch.

Did his name rhyme with Foldjammer?

My personal view is Hoyer had majority support until this weekend. Now after the Bills game, it's pretty even. Maybe slight edge JFF. I don't think the local golden boy story has much sway.

Assuming he doesn't get "starter" money from another team next year, I'd love to have Hoyer stick around as backup to JFF if the Browns want it. I don't think Hoyer has it in him to do that, even in his hometown, but I'll be more convinced of that in the coming weeks.

i was a firm Hoyer supporter. not sure what's going on with him at this point.

still not a Manziel fan. but maybe it's time to verify he sucks so they can prepare for next year.

Was the PI called against Dray the proper call? He didn't pick anyone, he didn't throw the defender to the ground, or hold (the call wasn't holding either), etc. What if his route is to just go straight...fly or seam route, whatever.

I think that's what a smart coaching staff would do. It's not time to switch your starting qb when you're still in the hunt.

If the Browns really switch to Johnny Football, that has to alter the purpose of their season. It is no longer about making the playoffs. Now the primary goal is the development of Johnny Football. That means you don't bench him if he struggles later in the year for Hoyer again.
If the coach thinks Manziel gives the team the best chance of making the playoffs, then Manziel will start.

If Manziel struggles -- and the team is still in the playoff hunt -- then Hoyer WILL return to the lineup.

There isn't a coach on this planet who would insist on playing an ineffective rookie QB while a team's playoff chances frittered away.
Well how many games does it take? That division is so tight one loss could make all the difference.
It might come down to one game, and Hoyer pissed away at least THREE, with his horribly play against Jax, Houston, and Buffalo. And he sure as hell TRIED to piss away the Atlanta game... THAT'S why JFF is worth the risk here.
I don't think that is fair. You're not counting the wins that he essentially pulled out of his rear. Plus the huge divisional blowout wins.

Hoyer can play. Yes, he's been playing poorly lately, but who the hell knows if Johnny is any better?
When the Browns best players have been out since October, losing to Houston and Buffalo - one of which has the best defensive lineman in the game, the other has the best pass rush as a team, shouldn't be a surprise. Losing Mack and Cameron very easily could have derailed the team for the season. Instead, the Browns have a winning record since losing these two pro bowlers. A lot of that credit should go to Hoyer.

Putting Johnny in now will be entertaining to most fans, but I'd be very skeptical about the team's chances to make the playoffs and if I were a fan of the team I would not want this move right now.
Completely agree. The fact that the coach left the door open on who would start next week is amateurish.

If you do that, you also have to remember that Manziel should have been picked off on one throw on his TD drive. It managed to get through to the TE, but it was really a pickable pass.

I sorta think it IS time to change QB because they ARE still in the hunt. That is how bad Hoyer has looked for a month now imo.

But I do see the flip side too...let Hoyer finish off his sinking ship or right the course.

Tough call really.

I thought it would be best to roll with Hoyer until we are eliminated because we won't make it to nor win in the playoffs with Manziel, but that was assuming Hoyer kept playing like he was. He's not been good every week, but he hadnt strung together multiple bad games in a row...then the last three games happened.

Can't defend Hoyer over Manziel anymore. I expected a good performance Sunday after he scuffled for most of two games and having Gordon back for a second game, but it was just more of the same and then he snapped in the third quarter.

Manziel is a Hail Mary for this season, but I don't think we can win three of four the way Hoyer has been playing anyway.

why are you guys hating on your future? I just don't get it... the kid is really good.
We probably aren't going to win with him this year. I'd be happy with 2-2. We are/were very close to the playoffs this year. Get the team its playoff experience then everyone benefits when Johnny is ready to take over next year,

In case anyone missed this.

#Browns will work out ex-OSU WR Duron Carter, son of HOF'er Cris Carter, league source says. CFL contract expires, can start visits Monday
--------

If you haven't heard of Duron Carter, he's the son of HOF WR Chris Carter, go check out the thread on the kid. 6'3 and is tearing up the CFL, fifteen NFL teams interested. Bit of a head case but uber talented.

Word of note, just a few days ago Chris said on ESPN that he hoped his son would sign with the Browns.

This is one of the best football podcasts I've have ever heard. Browns, Bucs, and NSFW language from Andre Knott and Zac Jackson.

I had never heard them before on this pod but honestly this is really good stuff.

They give personal stories, behind the scene stories, and drop knowledge that I never knew they had.

Andre and Zac talk Browns, quarterbacks, windows of opportunity and what happens when young, rich NFL players don’t get it.

Rooting for the Browns. Would love to see them make the playoffs. I can see a redux of the Saints game - think it was week 1 - get down in a fairly deep hole and storm back and win it.

i think they have a chance.

but i'm not betting any money on it.
I'll be shocked if we're in this game in the 2nd half. Especially w/ all the injuries on the D front & w/ Hoyer playing the way he has over the past month or so. I also wouldn't be surprised if Johnny is playing in the 2nd half this week.

Looking now like out 2 1st rounders next year will be middle of the pack w/ both teams (CLE/BUF) around 8-8 or 9-7...

Hope I'm wrong tho.

the Browns seem to hang in games with teams that have poor defensive lines. but they have so many defensive injuries, it's hard to imagine they can keep it close with the Colts.

The Browns were actually the ones leading in that game (week2) and almost let it slip away. The Saints have had their struggles offensively this year, I don't think the Colts will putter around, if they get going they keep going.

Hey, this one caught me off guard.

We might have a new starting center.

Appears that Ryan Seymour who filled in for Nick McDonald looked so good the staff not only left him in the Bills game after McDonald's injury where he could have come back but now he might get the start Sunday against the Colts since the staff is considering making the switch.

Go to the link that has all sorts of pics to illustrate how well Seymour played, I only shared the article up to the point of the pics.

I take this as good news if the staff feels he's an upgrade.

Ryan Seymour: New Browns Starting Center?By Tim A. Miller@Bumblyjack on Dec 5 2014

In the Bills game, Ryan Seymour stepped in at center after Nick McDonald went down with a leg injury and played 3 1/2 quarters. Will he replace McDonald permanently?

#Browns C Nick McDonald was cleared to return vs. Bills after hurting ankle, but staff stayed w/Ryan Seymour, who was playing 1st NFL game.

Let's take a look at how Ryan Seymour played vs. the Bills.

why would they split reps all week?

terrible idea if it's actually true.
I don't know, he was third string and he was an injury fill-in so even if McDonald could have gone back in the Buffalo game maybe he's not 100%.

I mistakenly thought this was Michael Bowie the guy we claimed off waivers from Seattle that many were/are really high on since Seymour has the number that Bowie was assigned when we claimed him but I don't even know if Bowie is still on the team. I thought we IRed him for next year and their were stories about him like the link at the bottom. I know PFT was really impressed with the signing and multiple teams put waiver claims in on him.

Seymour? I don't have a clue about but if you read the Dawgs by Nature article they break down the pros/cons of his only action against the Bills but the fact the coaches are debating whether to start him or not if McDonald is healthy has to mean they think he's an upgrade which is a positive IMHO.

Link to the August story on Bowie the guy we claimed from Seattle who isn't scheduled to play till next year:

Just saw this, the Broncos cut their punt return specialist Isaiah Burse so I checked his stats and compared them to our punt return unit.

Needing greater length on their kickoffs, the Broncos promoted kicker Brandon McManus from their practice squad to 53-man roster Saturday. McManus will kick off in the Broncos’ game Sunday against the Buffalo Bills while Connor Barth will handle the field goal duties.

McManus’ promotion was expected. The surprise was that the Broncos made roster room for McManus by waiving rookie Isaiah

Burse, who had handled all 53 of the team’s punt returns this season.
Here are the punt return stats for Isaiah Burse:

Isaiah Burse

- played all 12 games

- 24 fare catches

- 29 punt return attempts

- 211 punt return yards

- 7.27 yards per return

Here are the punt return stats for the Cleveland Browns

Travis Benjamin

- 6 FC

- 8 returns

- 23 yards

- 2.8 yards per punt return

Jordan Poyer

- 2 FC

- 7 returns

- 28 yards

- 4 yards per punt return

Jim Leonhard

- 11 FC

- 4 returns

- 26 yards

- 6.5 yards per punt return

K'Waun Williams

- 0 FC

- 1 returns

- 0 yards

- 0 yards per punt return

Combined Cleveland Brown total punt return stats

- 19 FC

- 20 returns

- 78 punt return yards on the ENTIRE SEASON

- 3.9 yards per return

We thumbed our nose at the chance to sign KR specialist Josh Cribbs who wound up signing a contract with the Colts and in two damn games this is what Josh Cribbs has done returning punts.

Josh Cribbs 2014 stats with the Colts in 2 games

- 4 FC

- 8 returns

- 61 punt return yards

- 7.6 yards per return

---------------------------

Cribbs has 61 punt return yards in TWO FREAK'N GAMES compared to our 78 combined punt return yards in twelve games over the entire season.

We done screwed up in not signing Cribbs and I have no earthly idea why we didn't but Isaiah Burse is sitting out there and wouldn't cost a darn thing other than a roster spot when we are still in the playoff chase and that kid would instantly provide a legit NFL punt return threat to a neutered punt return unit.

Anyone have a clue why we wouldn't have him in for a look-see? Hell Farmer brought in two kickers this past week after Cundiff missed another FG so why not sign a legit punt returner?

Two minutes ago, we have a new starting center:

-----------------

Nate Ulrich @NateUlrichABJ · 2m 2 minutes ago

#Browns will start their fourth center of season. Team announced Ryan Seymour will replace Nick McDonald in lineup today.
-----------------

Check out this story to find more about Ryan Seymour and how he played last week against the Bills.

I like the move since Seymour is more athletic who moves better and stronger than Nick McDonald so I think he's a better fit in the slide-zone blocking scheme and he graded out better than McDonald as a pass protector.

Keep an eye on how #62 looks, hope he does good.

hoyer threw a wide open receiver by 10 yards (no exaggeration) on what should 've been a TD, but then he did come back with a nice throw on the next play.

the greatest fraud ever perpetrated against the american people is brian hoyer as a starting quarterback in the national football league.

and can we stop the "he's 10-5 as a starter" crap? the cleveland browns are 10-5 while brian hoyer happens to be starting for their team. that defense is good. hoyer is most certainly not, and he hasn't been for pretty much this whole season.
