Pure gut feel but I think they want to make sure they get a full run at the coach they want. 

I think part of why Williams was chosen is there seems like very little chance he could get the non interim job. I think they don't want a situation where the interim guy gets hot and some momentum and then there's pressure to make him the permanent coach when instead they'd rather pick their guy. 

when they hired Haley i thought he would be auditioning for the job as interim coach when Hue was inevitably fired.

I'm leaning on 3 more wins this season...and thats being optimistic I think.  If the defense can step up and they tailor the offense to Baker's skillset, then I might switch Falcons and the other Bengals game.  So 5 wins is the best case scenario for me - but realistically probably 2-3 wins before the season is out.

What you described is why I thought Saunders would be perfect.  But perhaps he said he doesn't want the job.  May explain some of the leaks between noon and two then how the story changed before it became official later in the afternoon.  Ultimately I think you're right though.

That was my thought too. Saunders would be a similar "keep the seat warm" choice. All good. 

I know every NFL head coach job is a dream job but this job got significantly better after Mayfield answered the question of is he the guy. 

I don't know if that's how the Browns intended to play it but I think that's the result.

It's my understanding that the organizational structure isn't changing.  That means the GM will remain alongside of the coach on the chart (ie. he does not have the power to choose a coach).

I remember them saying that both the coach and the GM will continue to report directly to Haslam.  I seem to recall that this came from Haslam himself.  Sorry, I don't remember the exact quote.  I'm pretty sure it came in a presser after the firings, probably in Q & A.

On if Haslam will consider having the future head coach report to Dorsey:

Meh.  Haslam's track record making hiring decisions & driving "his bus" is beyond abysmal.

Note that chart above w/ the recent coaching winning percentages.  I have NO confidence in Haslam NFL / football wise, not to mention his FBI investigation, etc.  He may be good at running gas stations, but how he doesn't look in the mirror and say "maybe I should let some real footballguys ;o) get us back on track?" is beyond me.   

When he does finally get it remains to be seen.   The rub here is another bad hire sets the team back at least 2 if not 3 years to recover from.  Trust us, we know.

I don't know of another NFL org that has both the HC and GM reporting separately to the owner (maybe i'm wrong).  He needs to step out of the way, give Dorsey total control - if he wants to turn this around.   IMO the GM needs to be the HC's boss, not peer, especially if we want to get rid of all the BS going on w/ the staff.

I'd be shocked if Haslam isn't already yeilding a ton of this with Dorsey. I know it's fun to mock the "good at running gas stations" thing. Reality is he's wildly successful with a huge business in a tough industry. He's super smart. I don't think Dorsey would be there if he didn't have significant influence. I don't pretend to know how much influence every owner has with their team. I'd say it's like a lot of things and every line isn't a bright line and there's a good bit of using one's head as decisions are made and responsibilities are shared. We'll see.

I think they are setting themselves up to land a good coach yes. What I don't like is what @daveR & eluded to above, that coach reporting to Haslam rather than Dorsey. Haslam has proven to be a bad evaluator of talent and seems to, I don't have proof but seems to, meddle too much in day-to-day operations. I get it, you scratch a check for a billion, you are going to have input but it hasn't been helpful and arguably it's been destructive to the growth of the team. I trust in Dorsey, seed him the power, sit back and watch your team transform into a winner. The building blocks are there and as we discussed yesterday, a major piece in Mayfield is in place.

I would sleep much better at night if Jimmy comes out at some point and says, "all football operations run through and report to John Dorsey and John reports to me."

Based on the dysfunction within the team, I don't think Saunders was truly in the running.  There was a tweet from Albert Breer between the firings and the team meeting on Monday

As petty and childish as that may be, if that is coming from someone within the organization and the locker rooms, then I could understand why Saunders wasn't named the interim HC.  I think, as you and many others did, Saunders would've made sense - but he was viewed as Hue's guy.  I have to think that Dorsey wanted to eliminate the chatter by clipping both Hue and Haley.  If Saunders is truly viewed as Hue's Guy/Spy, then putting him in the Interim HC role would've perpetuated this dysfunction longer as it would appear that Hue never left. 

Williams wasn't affiliated with either Hue or Haley, so he would be the logical choice.  Also the fact that the Defense seems to really respect him and plays hard for him every game.  The Defense is also the only unit that has been performing in a positive, consistent manner throughout all of this dysfunction.  If Williams can drive the Offense to perform half as well as the Defense, then it will be a step in the right direction.

I'm not sure Saunders turned it down, moreso than he was never formally asked to take on the role.  I think Donovan jumped the gun with an assumption and tried to backtrack the comment after it made the rounds.  No one in the media carried a second source on the Saunders nomination.  Many only perpetuated Donovan's original tweet, but not his backtrack.  

Irregardless, what's done is done, and I think Williams will get more out of this team for the rest of the season than Saunders would have - so a fine choice IMO.

Makes you realize that some of the players were impacted by the coaching dysfunctions.  Goes back to the adage that you're willing to work harder for someone you like vs someone you don't.  If guys were starting to care during practice this week, then just maybe they'll play a little better come Sunday.  I'm hoping we'll see a team more like the one we saw during the 2nd half of the Jets game than what we saw last week.

For me it came down to one moment with Hue.  On Hard Knocks when he was sitting in front of his entire staff and wouldn't listen to what they had to say.  He was done for me at that moment.

Supposedly, Hue is making his post-firing ESPN circuit all day today.  

I'm not surprised by the article, only that it took a few days for it to come out.  I thought for sure Hue would want to share his story within 24hrs of his removal.  The backlash of this "exclusive interview" has been both eye-opening and funny.  People have been digging out old Silver and MKC tweets from the drafts where Hue was on record saying the complete opposite of what he said in his interview yesterday.  Other sports reports are sharing their own views and conversations with Hue and these also contradict everything that Hue is trying to paint with MKC.  He is burying himself deep in caca and will not be able to get out - and I think he finally took MKC down with her.  She is getting hit just as hard for being his mouth piece and not really asking tougher questions.  It's a shame, but I'm hoping people such as @daveR can finally see the kind of coach we had here in Hue and agree that he needed to go.  His narcisstic attitude and uncanny ability of throwing people under the bus has helped set this team back.  I can't be any happier knowing he's gone and won't be making any more decisions or guiding any of the younger players.  Let's get a real coach in here and make something special happen.

You've been around long enough to know MKC was/is Hue's shill. I'm kinda shocked she doesn't stay in the guest house.

For anyone new to the thread because I know we have some drive-by's this week, this interview and what you will hear today is classic Hue Jackson. In a very respectful way he takes everyone around him, pats them on the back, comments on how nice they look, maybe asks them how the family is doing and then as politely as possible pushes them in front of the oncoming bus, walks away and tells everyone watching they tripped.

Since the release of MKC's article above, the backlash has been tremendous.  More CLE beat writers have come out to bash Hue and set the record straight.  Social Media is ripping Hue and his article in every direction.  Some of his past players are going on NFL Network and talking about how Hue's behavior.  It's not a pretty look, and now Hue is running the self-promotion circuit on ESPN all day.  I expect today to be non stop Hue on social media.

Broo View: Hue Jackson needs to keep his distance from Cincinnati - Amazing that after Hue's firing, even the Cincinnati media and fanbase has come out and made requests of the team to not bring Hue back in any capacity.  Hue was being groomed as Marvin Lewis' successor before he took the HC job in CLE.  Now they don't want him after watching what happened in CLE.

Allbright: Coaches who have worked with him call him "You Jackson" ...because 'its always your fault, never his.'
