Colts sign Quinn Gray, Jared Lorenzen (1 Viewer)

I think so. I can't see both making the team - I still see them keeping only 2 QBs on the regular season roster - so maybe one of them can beat out Sorgi, maybe (though, Sorgi is still under a multi-year deal, even though he's terrible).

I think they're "training camp arms", sure, but also if there was ever a year when the Colts wanted to consider having a quality QB3 on the active roster, it would be this one.

Anyone think Gray could unseat Sorgi as Manning's backup? A big playbook to absorb in a few weeks, but lots of reps while Manning nurses his bursa sac scar.

I still don't see them keeping more than 2 QBs. They need the bodies in their DL rotation to be effective (especially back-up pass rushers - which is why the #1 thing I'm watching for in the pre-season for the colts are undersized DEs Marcus Howard and Curtis Johnson) - so every roster spot is crucial.

I give Gray about a 10% chance, and Lorenzen about a 2% chance of being the backup. For some reason, they've kept Sorgi all these years - even when Shawn King clearly out-played Sorgi in the pre-season a couple of years ago.

just a thought (although probably VERY VERY unlikely)...maybe Manning's knee surgery has them a little worried......
I don't think these two QBs would do much to alleviate those worries if that was indeed the case. Gray is decent, but lets face it if Manning is out the Colts are sunk with or without Gray or the Hefty Lefty.

They probably dont want Sorgi getting blasted in the pre-season.
good point
:goodposting: Although I would tend to agree with the others who pointed out that if there were a year for the Colts to expand to 3 QB on the roster this might be the year. Say 25% chance that Gray or Lorenzen stick as QB3.

I don't think either of them will beat out Sorgi, especially Lorenzen. The Giants have had a real need for a solid backup QB for years and Lorenzen was still let go.

Maybe they want to keep those guys away from the Bears and Vikings so those teams remain focused on getting Favre to come out of retirement... :goodposting:

Yep just pre-season fodder.

I do wish the Colts would finally sign a better backup though. :lmao: I know Manning's streak blah blah blah, but you never know in this game. If they had a "true" backup it could get them through at least a short stretch if he went down.

Personally I think Sorgi is a perfectly adequate backup to Manning. Indianapolis has drafted and groomed him to be Manning-lite. He knows the play book and his numbers really aren't that bad. If you watch preseason games, you'll see Sorgi mimicking the things Manning does in the game, right down to the wavy arms from a couple years ago. The Colts are 13-3 in games where Sorgi has seen action.

Personally I think you've banged your head on the Natural Bridge one too many times. ie you are really reaching. I've seen the guy play. No he isn't the worst QB I ever saw, but If he is their QB for any length of time, they're hosed. He's not even Manning ultra-lite. More like O'Douls. Might not be the case with a true backup.

In pure talent levels I agree with you. But Manning runs that offense, from practice to managing the backups. At this point their time investment in Sorgi is probably worth more than a more talented backup off the street that would have to fight the uphill learning curve battle. I don't expect anyone to believe the Colts would be the same without Manning, but I'm not so sure you could get a better backup than Sorgi right now.Long term though? Take it up with Polian. And yes I've been to Natural Bridge, but it was a long while ago. And you can't get close enough to touch it.

A closer inspection of those stats shows that in games where Sorgi has attempts more than 5 passes, they are 1-3.I do agree though that because of the time invested in Sorgi, there isn't a snowballs chance in hell he is going to lose the No.2 job.

I'm quite sure you could, although it might take a year as QB3 to learn it and then come in #2 next year. But this reminds me eerily of the Bert Jones era.

If you say so, been a long time for me too. Neat little day trip though.

I think Grey has played well when given the chance. In fact I think he played better than Garrard did last year in the few games he had.

Lorenzen = BBQ (big beautiful quarterback) or The Pilsbury Throwboy.
...or round mound of touchdown, or J-Load, or ......list goes on and on aond on
Lorenzen is very versatile. He can play TE, DL, Guard, Center, QB, FB etc...My friend graduated from UK and we always called him "The Battleship".

I agree that he's probably worth having on the team due to that.

I'd love to see a pulling OG get a lateral from the QB or toss a TD :goodposting:

Well, Gray had significantly worse numbers across the board and a losing record as a starter, but you're probably right onGray 55.6%, 10td/5int, 6.85yds/att, 2-3 as a starter Garrard 64.0%, 18td/3int, 7.72yds/att, 9-2Really I think the Colts just brought Gray in to get info on the offense the Jags put in last year.
