9.22a - Deftones - Hexagram - 2003
9.22b - Radiohead - The National Anthem - 2000
Simply put, this Deftones song is class A material to me. It's insane, heavy, metal, nu metal, and beautiful. I love these guys. If this is the heights of nu metal, give it to me and then some. One of the greatest metal bands ever. Does Radiohead need an explanation? What the heck was that instrument? An onces mondelet? A theremin? Almost went Beatles and a song about correspondence in a muted way, but I'll pass.
Almost picked a Deftones song for 2000. Kind of wish I did.
Great Radiohead track as well. I love the ending that sounds like a brass band crashing into a wall or something.
There really isn't anything you could have picked wrong for the 2000 Deftones. Yoah.
I've just -- and I'm not really a metalhead other than but for a glam/thrash excursion in the late '80s -- loved the Deftones from the word jump. Just love 'em, and actually like their hits less than most of their deep cuts. Their deep cuts are their best. It's too bad Chi died for a myriad of reasons; but the guy from Quicksand makes them sound totally different, and it's not as good. And I love Quicksand.
eta* And Radiohead soothes my free jazz/noise rock love vibe at the end of that song. You're right. I also love new instruments or instruments that are out of left field. Never forget Thom Yorke playing that song late night on television in some TV format, totally on his knees, looking like a shaver to a lathe. Awesome.
