DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (2 Viewers)

I'll be out of town either Thurs-Sun evening or Friday - Sunday evening for a bachelor party. Haven't decided when I'm leaving yet but I'll have to catch up on missed picks when I return Sunday night.

Round 20

AviciiWaiting for Love (2015)

Haven't kept up with music quite as much in the last few years, so my picks for, say, 2013-2015 are more poppy, and I'm fine with that. Avicii has some fantastic pop singles, and while I prefer a couple others from previous years, this one's damn solid. The animated video, with art by Guillaume Singelin, is also fantastic.

Just lost my dog to cancer a couple of weeks ago so hat video was brutally beautiful for me. Nice song too and new to me. Thanks!

Especially when you aren't that old.  Hope all is well.
I am fine.  Evidently my esophagus has some damage and food gets stuck in there once in awhile.  Usually can force it out, but last night I had a few hours of not being able to swallow anything.  Ended up at the ER getting a scope down the gullet to move it along.  Got some lovely meds and a 3 week soft food diet for my troubles.  Nothing super serious..

20.a         Seven Mary Three, "Cumbersome" (1995)

This amazing track has been called "the best Pearl Jam song ever" and drawn similar praise for these unfortunately one-hit wonders who met while attending William & Mary.  This is a perfect "post-grunge" song, lacking only the Fender Rhodes or Hammond B-3 part that I adore in this sort of music, but the lyrics of this one are so fascinating that it doesn't really matter.  The guitar part somehow straddles between sounding like it was recorded in a garage on a four-track and coming off as slickly produced, and there are a few unexpected musical flourishes, especially toward the end.  As a bonus, any song with a bass break (here at 2:25) automatically gets my attention, but here it's accompanied by lyrics that sound like something out of science fiction ("There is a balance between two worlds/One with an arrow and a cross/Regardless of the balance life has become/Cumbersome) and the interlude ends with a screaming pick slide.  Love it.

20.b          Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, "Blue on Black" (1997)

Sounding like a fusion between Nirvana and Dylan with a wailing blues-tinged guitar solo to make Stevie Ray Vaughn proud, this song seems to have influenced about 90% of what you hear sung by male vocalists on modern country radio.  The hooks are simple but gripping, the lyrics dealing with regret over a breakup are powerful, and the vocal is understated yet impactful.  I'm a little surprised this one was still available, but I'm not complaining; I've been looking for a reason to listen to this song again for many years.  Mad props to that fantastic lead guitar sound that Shepherd pulls off, including just enough of the edge of the pick when required to attack certain notes.
Love these picks!

20.xx  Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet (2000)

Like U2, MM's last 2-3 albums have been disappointing.  But this song is from arguably my favorite album of this century thus far.

I enjoy Good News... and We Were Dead... but there is no doubt that The Moon & Antarctica is a masterpiece. For some reason, I thought it was released in 2001 but by the time I bothered to make sure I had already made my 2000 selection otherwise this probably would have been my pick too.

20a - Full Of FIre - The Knife - 2013

20b - The Next #### - Pharoahe Monch and Busta Rhymes - 1999

I picked these because my playlist was getting too rockist. The Knife put out a dope-### techno song in 2013, complete with a little tweak on modern sexuality (it's NSFW, this link) and Pharoahe Monch is probably the most unknown but respected rappers around. He was at his height during this era. Two other rappers from two incredible albums also worked here, but this sort of was the song I listened to most in 2002 or so when I first heard of all the Rawkus guys.

No surprise, but love these picks as well.  Looking forward to listening to stuff I haven't heard off your mix.

The main sheet is messed up again, if the sheet is sorted based on the column with the red numbers, will it fix everything?

My jukebox is incredibly ####-heavy right now, so I'm going to fix that with some of my more recent years. Dear Rouge is a band that has toured through my hometown a few times now and they play in a bigger venue every time I see them, feels like they're starting to blow up a little bit, at least in Canada - in any case, I really love this one from them. It's in a similar 80s throwback to HAIM, CHVRCHES, etc...

19.19 - Dear Rouge - Black to Gold (2015)

Frankie Rose is from Dum Dum Girls, Crystal Slits and a bunch of other bands that were briefly big, but this one from her solo is the best thing she's done IMO, just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I would say maybe RIYL M83.

19.19 - Frankie Rose - Interstellar (2012)

And, in addition to being guy-heavy, I'm also featuring a jukebox full of almost exclusively pasty white dudes (with the exception of my 60s girls groups). The 97-01 era is tough for me, I was going to go a few different ways here, including just keep on picking indie rock songs, but the late nineties has some legitimately great rap songs that I still listen to, like this classic, that was a staple at the awful night club I frequented in my younger days (shout out "Sin City").

20.19 - Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotize (1997)

I was in a club in Montreal a few years back and the entire place lost it from the first note of this one, and it definitely takes me back to just having my license for the first time with "2001" blasting out of it, like I was the coolest guy in the city.

20.19 - Dr. Dre - Still D.R.E. (1999)

If you 2want to wait 20  or so I'll do it and update. In the middle of hanging crown molding

I like these picks.

I am trying to do this as well, but that '98/'99 combo is still staring at me without many ideas I like.
99 was awfully tough.  I ended up listening to about 100 songs, most of which I had never heard.  Lily Allen really bailed me out.  I dig her tune I picked.  Whew.

Dear Rouge!!  Great pick, NV!

Whoever keeps barging the spreadsheet, stop

For Round 19,

Going with a pair of songs influenced by others in my family. (read that as Girls!! ;) )

My little girl has started to delve into music, and as I was introducing her to Spotify, I shockingly found a song of hers that I actually liked!

She was starting like the artist Zedd, and I found an acoustic version of on of his songs that was very good, so...

2014 - Find You (Acoustic) - Zedd (ft. Matthew Koma and Miriam Bryant)

I don't like the original version, to electronic for me.

My wife likes country music, and we tend to have it on in the background in the car.

2015 - Girl Crush - Little Big Town

If you have ever listened to the Tony Kornheiser show, you know about the songs his listeners send into the show. This was sent in today and nails Tony and the show.
