DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (1 Viewer)

I hate that Mbop song and I have no problem saying that I like pop music

I have a few pop songs that I will be picking later in the draft

Am I the only one who finds Ironic far more indefensible than Mmmbop? I kind of still like Jagged Little Pill, but Ironic might be the worst song on the album.
I would tend to agree. JLP is a terrific album, but Ironic is definitely a bit too whiny and monotonous.
....and of course famously misses the mark on the definition of "irony".
"Isn't it a bummer" didn't test as well with audiences.

I have no more likes or this would take the cake. Take the skinheads bowling/take them bowling. Also, Please was playing at Nordstrom Rack the other day, so make of that what you will. But it was nice. And Morrissey was on while my ### was wiping the clothes with though-the-underwear buttbutter, so there's that.

Upbeat Fleetwood Mac songs always get me in a good mood. I think they are up high as one of the best male/female ensemble bands ever. Christine, Lindsey, and Stevie are all talented singer-songwriters. This is a Christine song...

11.12 - Say You Love Me - Fleetwood Mac (1975)

This song always gets me in a good mood too...

11.12 - You better You Bet - The Who (1981)

i love to hear you say my name
especially when you say yes

i got your body right now on my mind
but I drunk myself blind to the sound of old t-rex, mmmm
to the sound of old t-rex
oh, and who's next

Anna Karina. She's Godard's muse from French New Wave. He was married to her. Actually, Band a part is Band of Outsiders, written and directed by Godard, and is Tarantino's film or production company. But enough of that stuff; it's coincidental: I'm not that cool. I just think she's beautiful and that's supposed to be a moving .gif.

Yo Mama picks:

11.23 - Shake Your Rump, Beastie Boys (1989)

This was the B side of the [redacted] cassingle (cassingles were the bomb), and I wore through that tape the summer of '89 just replaying this song and skipping the other song [bong rip]. Paul's Boutique is still one of my favorite all-time albums.

11.23 - No One Knows, Queens of the Stone Age (2002)

1997 Hansen "MmmBop"

1996 Alannis Morrisette "Ironic"
Are you going to say you like the MMbop song
Of course I like it. It's a throwback to the Jackson 5.Look, quick explanation: when this draft started I was looking for a theme for my picks, like everyone else. But I was hamstrung with all of my picks post 2000- I don't listen to a lot of new music, so I was forced to choose pop hits on the radio that I really liked but wouldn't have started listening to if not for my kids. After I chose "All About That Bass" and I got ripped for it, I thought to myself, you know what? There's a whole lot of songs all through the years that everybody looks down upon but which I secretly really love- and since many of them are love songs and what I would call "Bubblegum Pop" anyhow, why not make that my theme?

So yeah, these are hits, and yeah some of these are songs the "purists" can't stand. They're songs that a lot of people are ashamed to admit they like. But I'm not ashamed.
Honestly I think anyone that says they love the Jackson 5 hits but claims they can't stand MmmBop is being a little disingenuous. While Hanson isn't close to being as prolific as the Jacksons of course, that's a fun little pop song that could have followed "ABC" on a Jackson 5 record.

I actually did own the CD single to that song, it was a "guilty pleasure" that I made no secret about.
Mmm Bop is on my list.

I thought it was Linda Cardellini. Some other dude has her avatar - forgot who.

Frostillicus did, IIRC.

Round 11

T.Rex,

(1982)Bit surprised that 3 T.Rex songs have been taken so far, but not this one. That guitar sound kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiills to this very day. Makes Bolan sound like the coolest dude on the planet.

And the Jam tune is great. Everything just flows beautifully. Picking a jukebox-friendly Jam song is a lot easier than deciding on my favorite.

11.24 "Sister Christian" - Night Ranger (1984)

11.24 "All You Zombies" - The Hooters (1985)

The mid-'80s lacked cohesion in terms of genres, so going with a couple of memorable tunes. "Sister Christian" arguably set off the power ballad craze that followed. "All You Zombies" was one of the better reggae-tinged tunes that were hitting the mainstream at time.

11.13b - The Sugarhill Gang - "Rapper's Delight" (1979)

Why the hell not. I guess my mix wouldn't be much of an anthology of hip-hop history without the original.

See, I'm Wonder Steve Tasker and I'd like to say hello,

To the black, to the white, the red and the brown,
The purple and yellow.

Bonus cameo from my guy Lester Holt

1966 - The Supremes - "You Keep Me Hangin' On"

1967 - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"

1968 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "All Along the Watchtower"

1970 - Toots & The Maytals - "Pressure Drop"

1971 - Bill Withers - "Ain't No Sunshine"

1972 - Stevie Wonder - "Superstition"

1977 - Bob Marley - "One Love/People Get Ready"

1978 - Earth, Wind & Fire - "September"

1979 - The Sugarhill Gang - "Rapper's Delight"

1983 - Lionel Richie - "All Night Long (All Night)"

1984 - Billy Ocean - "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)"

1987 - Eric B & Rakim - "I Ain't No Joke"

1988 - Bobby Brown - "My Prerogative"

1989 - Bell Biv Devoe - "Poison"

1990 - A Tribe Called Quest - "Can I Kick It?"

1992 - Mary J. Blige - "Real Love"

1994 - Aaliyah - "Back and Forth (feat. R. Kelly)"

1995 - Mobb Deep - "Shook Ones (Pt. II)"

1996 - Fugees - "No Woman No Cry"

2000 - OutKast - "B.O.B."

It's a fine song if your jukebox caters to rollerskating 12 year olds.

love it. but for the theme, RD would have been my 3rd round pick.

I seriously wouldn't have spotlighted Hanson if I had any idea people here were considering picking their songs.
This is a broken record argument for me, but I refuse to believe that "spotlighting" has ever hurt anybody, ever, in this type of draft. How dare you reveal the fact that Hanson existed (exists? I honestly don't know).

Nope. You're the reason for my 1994 pick, and I think we're/I'm the better for it.

eta* In all seriousness, the stimulation of cognitive stuff contributes to the collective knowledge of things. Sounds stupid, but I agree with you. Jogging memory and all that.

OK Computer is my jam, and I'm glad Radiohead is represented here, but I had some trouble fitting their songs into my draft plan. The Bends and In Rainbows have their best jukebox songs (IMO), but 1995 and 2007 were both off-limits from the start. "Let Down" is incredible, though.
