DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (1 Viewer)

11.13b - The Sugarhill Gang - "Rapper's Delight" (1979)

Why the hell not. I guess my mix wouldn't be much of an anthology of hip-hop history without the original.

See, I'm Wonder Steve Tasker and I'd like to say hello,

To the black, to the white, the red and the brown,

The purple and yellow.

Bonus cameo from my guy Lester Holt

1966 - The Supremes - "You Keep Me Hangin' On"

1967 - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"

1968 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "All Along the Watchtower"

1970 - Toots & The Maytals - "Pressure Drop"

1971 - Bill Withers - "Ain't No Sunshine"

1972 - Stevie Wonder - "Superstition"

1977 - Bob Marley - "One Love/People Get Ready"

1978 - Earth, Wind & Fire - "September"

1979 - The Sugarhill Gang - "Rapper's Delight"

1983 - Lionel Richie - "All Night Long (All Night)"

1984 - Billy Ocean - "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)"

1987 - Eric B & Rakim - "I Ain't No Joke"

1988 - Bobby Brown - "My Prerogative"

1989 - Bell Biv Devoe - "Poison"

1990 - A Tribe Called Quest - "Can I Kick It?"

1992 - Mary J. Blige - "Real Love"

1994 - Aaliyah - "Back and Forth (feat. R. Kelly)"

1995 - Mobb Deep - "Shook Ones (Pt. II)"

1996 - Fugees - "No Woman No Cry"

2000 - OutKast - "B.O.B."
This pick is awesome. This is way out of my wheelhouse and I rarely step outside of my metal. However, I loved SHG and go back and listen to this song every few years. I just added SHG to my list of music to add to my collection so I can listen to it more. This is how you fill a jukebox.
My one issue with Rapper's Delight is that Baby Bubba's verse about the lousy cooking at his friend's house is horrible.

I kind of wish Smoo were in this just for the spirited debate on the merits of Barbie Girl.
Yeah, what ever happened to Smoo?I know he got heavy suspensions for relatively minor stuff, tried a few aliases and.......?
Smoo very occasionally checks in at LABS. I think he's kind of over the whole internet thing, but he seems happy when he's checked in. He had lunch with fatguy in December when he swung by DC.

well, the chicken DID taste like wood

Eh. Tim can pick whatever he damn well pleases, but having been in past drafts with him, I wouldn't have expected him to take this approach.

Keep rolling with it, though.
When he can draft exlusively pre 1977, then he can draft with dignity. When post 77 comes into play he's running around the campus, nude, with a pigs head on his genitals.

I figured I should take my most played song of 2015 ;)

10(a): CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN - Cocoon (2014)

LINK

Not the song people usually think about from this album, but I will need a good drinking tune in the mix.

10(b): AC/DC - Have a Drink on Me (1980)

LINK

I don't see it taken, which is a surprise, but I will add it to the mix.

11(a): MICHAEL JACKSON - Billie Jean (1982)

LINK

If it was available, not sure I would have picked Kashmir over this one anyway. Love this whole album, but this song always sticks out for me...

11(b): LED ZEPPELIN - In My Time of Dying (1975)

LINK

I'm going to make mine and ask for forgiveness later if I misread what eephus laid down.

11.08A: "Come Together" - Beatles (1969) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHGXfJKv6mU

11.08B: " The '59 Sound" - Gaslight Anthem (2008) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1lq40tR72Q

Love The '59 Sound. That was my back up plan for 08
I've had to scour harder on the more recent stuff to get what I feel fits my bar's jukebox. There's a ton of newer music I like, but that doesn't fit my drinkin'-&-singin' along motif (as I hear it in my mind). I had forgotten about this GA song until I heard another of theirs on sat radio the other night and the light bulb went off. Then I couldn't remember the name of the damned thing so I probably spent more time looking for "The '59 Sound" than I have all of the others combined.

I figured I'd better snag "Come Together" without waiting any longer because that's another that at least one drunk will try to sing to if it comes on.

So, I was just interviewing a company to do house cleaning (Merry Maids is getting the boot - too much turnover) and I had our jukebox playing. When she got here, it played a couple of oldies in a row. Then that Morphine song came on and scared the hell out of both of us.

I looked more closely at her business card when she left and it has Proverbs 22:1 printed on it.

I wasn't sure where modern music was heading and to be honest had tuned out of the music scene, coincidentally after getting married and having my first child.

After grunge had died and the dance scene was everywhere I couldn't see any hope.

Then I heard this album. Game back on. My fave track from it.

 I always loved that verse

Ever went over a friends house to eat

And the food just ain't no good?

I mean the macaroni's soggy, the peas are mushed,

And the chicken tastes like wood

So you try to play it off like you think you can

By saying that you're full

And then your friend says, "Mama, he's just being polite

He ain't finished, uh-uh, that's bull!"

So your heart starts pumpin' and you think of a lie

And you say that you already ate

And your friend says "Man, there's plenty of food"

So you pile some more on your plate

While the stinky food's steamin', your mind starts to dreamin'

Of the moment that it's time to leave

And then you look at your plate and your chicken's slowly rottin'

Into something that looks like cheese

Oh so you say "That's it, I gotta leave this place

I don't care what these people think,

I'm just sittin' here makin' myself nauseous

With this ugly food that stinks"

So you bust out the door while it's still closed

Still sick from the food you ate

And then you run to the store for quick relief

From a bottle of Kaopectate

And then you call your friend two weeks later

To see how he has been

And he says, "I understand about the food,

Baby Bubba, but we're still friends"

I HATE U2 fan. I saw them with AF up in Canada on that stoopid claw tour a few years back. The tool bag fans of theirs were worse then Yankee fan. They talk non stop crap, and just want to fight. They are soo far up the arrogant Sunglasses ####, that they are blind. Needless to say I will never support that band again.

Im not quite clear on your position. Could you please clarify those vague statements?

I haven't had a chance to listen to most of the songs chosen that I didn't know until today.

I REALLY liked that Thorns record. Is all of their stuff like that? Kinda Jayhawks-y, jangly-poppish?

I'm still scared of that damned Morphine song I heard with Church Lady. I need to listen to that one again

I haven't heard that BOC "Psycho" song in forever. Gracias to whoever picked that.

I knew Usher's "Yeah"; I just didn't know that I knew it by title alone. He's a pretty big cultural presence, no? If my Luddite-### has heard of him, he must be. I know everything I've seen him do made me think he is really talented.

I am sure there are a lot of ####ty fan bases and dooshy artists. Doesn't effect me listening to their music.

Joshua Tree here - that was the first tape I ever bought with my hard earned allowance of $1/week. Apparently, neither of my parents thought to adjust for inflation when it came to allowance. I remember paying at the display case counter in the gun/sporting goods section of Longs Drugs. I still find it pretty cool that the local drug store carried Uzis.

can't say I've ever been around a U2 fan who liked to fight.

Canadian U2 fans not to be trifled with
might be a Canadian thing.

Fight like high school nerds like to fight. No fisticuffs witnessed. I did hear about the geek guy who was organizing the line, put his hands on a girl in the pit, when she wouldn't move from his spot. That seemed to be a big controversy and she actually got kicked out.

I saw U2 in St. Petersburg, Florida in the 90s, and they were great. I had tickets for a show in Raleigh in the 2000's, but the show got canceled due to their stage being torn up by a storm at another venue. Something like that. Anyway, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary about the fans.
