Dolphin Players bullied Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito SUSPENDED (3 Viewers)

Young players across the league are gonna be like a protected species after all the details of this come out. This could turn into a huge story across the entire NFL.

Honestly, I've always thought the idea of hazing was rather silly. It could be fun if light-hearted, but you are always gonna get morons who take it way too far, and that is when #### gets out of hand, and it sounds like that is what took place here. It should be interesting to see how this plays out and what effect it will have across the league as far as hazing in the future goes.
it'll certainly be highlighted front and center with the Dolphins playing on Monday Night Football next week. I'm sure Costas and every other national media sports personality will be spewing their views on the issue with their next game being nationally televised.
If there's one thing Costas knows how to do, it's give a lecture about something like this at halftime. I'm pretty excited.

This confuses me...

Though Richie Incognito reportedly is being examined by the NFLPA for his alleged bullying of Miami Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin, the two apparently are on a good enough basis where they’re texting with each other.

NFL Network reporter Jeff Darlington says Martin on Friday sent text messages back to Incognito, who reached out to find out how his fellow lineman was doing.

Despite Incognito being accused of tormenting Martin, Martin called Incognito “buddy” in a text.

“How u doing buddy?” Martin replied to Incognito, according to Darlington.

Martin also told Incognito he was doing good and explained some of what bothered him.

“Yeah, I’m good man. It’s insane bro but just know I don’t blame you guys at all it’s just the culture around football and the locker room got to me a little.”

That was probably at a point before he realized how strong a case he had and got representation. Incognito was still the bully he was trying to keep cool with and not set off.

@JeffDarlington: Richie Incognito was advised by Joe Philbin tonight he has been indefinitely suspended by team while NFL investigates
TY ID, great info.

To me that says a lot about this situation, incredible turn of events and Philbin may have to do his just to save his own job. Philbn might have to step down if he was told back in April/May and did nothing.
If it comes out that Philbin knew Martin had been racially threaten and he did nothing about it then his job is certainly on the line here. Now hes cutting heads to save his own skin.
Exactly Kelly and that's where I am trying to steer this is back to Ireland and Philbin. Folks in here seem to want to judge what the Miami Dolphins should do based on a media that is going to push push push for "Bullying"...that's a made up word by the media for this. Martin did not say he was bullied, but when the media uses that term it gives a lot of sympathy for Martin and many posters in here have already taken that position.

I think Martin was pushed beyond some light hazing. I find it very hideous what Incognito did in extortion of the $15k, that's the part that really kills me and is criminal in my opinion.

It should be noted that players in the last 2 drafts are not making the same money they were 3-4 years ago but the vets who got similar hazing when they entered the league want to get their turn to haze the rookies and it is not flying down here in Miami.
MOP - This whole light hazing culture is the root of the problem. A dollar candy bar, a $10 lunch, a $50 dry cleaning bill, a $200 dinner tab, a $1000 night out for the line men, a $15000 trip to Vegas? Do you care to draw the line when "light" hazing becomes bullying? It's tough enough for most of these guys to gain acceptance since they basically after the vets jobs and paychecks to begin with. A no tolerence for hazing policy would be a step in the right direction.

% chance Martin ever wears a Phins uniform again?

% chance Martin ever wears an NFL uniform again?
With the money he is going to take them for in court/settlement it does not matter to him overly much.

Question remains, with this going on, how soon before the Dolphins go in a death spiral?

Bonus question: How many years before the Dolphins can pick themselves up and be relevant again?

% chance Martin ever wears a Phins uniform again?

% chance Martin ever wears an NFL uniform again?
0% on the first one.

100% on the second one. The last thing the NFL is going to do is blackball the victim bringing all this forward. It would just show how right he is about the NFL and the pervasive "locker room culture".

Good luck enforcing that. Hazing runs rampant in college and it carries over to the NFL and a lot of other masculine jobs like fire fighters and such. I think making rookies carry bags, cutting their hair, taping them to the goal posts, I guess I don't see a problem there. Extortion for $15,000 seems over the line.

I promise you Roger Goodell will order a code red...haha. He's gonna stick his fists so far up the Miami Dolphins ### they're gonna learn what honor the shield truly means.

We just put a scandal to bed down here in Miami with the Canes. We managed to walk into a bank vault armed and loaded on full video security with no masks on an managed to escape it. Well Martin has caught the Miami Dolphins red handed but this time it's Roger Goodell not Mark Emmert.

People spending their time blaming Martin... "He should have just slugged them", "Have tougher skin", "Just avoid them", etc. Classic victim blaming. God help your kids if they ever get bullied, hurt, abused, and they turn to you for help.

Good for Martin for standing up for himself in the great American way- through lawyers. The team ignores his pleas for help? Meet me in the courtroom. Martin can do 10x the damage here without throwing a single punch. So actually, he IS fighting back. I hope they throw the book at Incognito hard enough that his head comes clean off.

If we fire Ireland and the coach then we might be able to pull out of this faster. Philbin is toast, he is trying to cover his ### and Ireland likely as well. Ireland and Philbin would never get a HC or GM job again, their careers are in jeopardy.

I don't know about the bonus question, can't think that far ahead at the moment.

Incognito is an alcoholic d bag.
ha, why am I strangely reminded of Ben Affleck's Character in "Dazed and Confused".

Hazing and that sort of thing is AWESOME, and truly is something that has proven time and time again to be beneficial to team building and culture. Problem is, sometimes the people doing it are pretty limited mentally.................when keepin it real goes wrong.

Possibility of Martin being gay are starting to surface and make their way around Phins message boards...let's put the pieces together if that were the case and I have some serious doubts but...

-Martin backs out of a wild and crazy Vegas weekend, maybe the cat was out of the bag somehow someway, team jokes and gets up from the table, he storms out.

-Hate crime can only be 1 of 2 things and Richie has played around non-whites his entire life so it would have surfaced if he was a biggot. That leaves one other option for this to be tackled as a hate crime and would lend credence to a situation like we've never seen before.

Just food for thought but it is possible. Hate crime?

Jonathan Martin attended Harvard-Westlake in Studio City, California (private school where all the rich kids attend) then to Stanford (well also a private school where 99% come from well off families).

He might've been sheltered all his life and players like Incognito thought of him as bit naive and an easy prey.

Isn't Ireland the one who asked Dez Bryant some rude question a few years back about his mother or something like that?

Might be a foreshadowing of things to come?

Maybe not.

Here's a good one if you want the opposing view to all the sympathizers in here...this is an actual season ticket holder, I didn't write this just posting it in here.

I think workplace harassment or discrimination are the phrases your looking for, not hate crime.

UR right and we now know that "racial" is the term Martin's camp is using so he is playing the race card in this. They are really suing the Miami Dolphins, they said Miami knew about it and let it fester or continue on, this is gonna end poorly.

Miami has lost 2/5 of their starting OL.

And that starting OL also had just lost Long this offseason, and wasn't that good to begin with. This is a mess, and I'm talking on the field now. Because it's obvious it's a mess off the field.

I know a lot of kids who went to Harvard-Westlake, and "sheltered" is the last word I'd use to describe them... "alcoholics" might be a better word, but that's off-topic.

for conduct detrimental to the team, in the wake of the Jonathan Martin investigation...

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9924206/miami-dolphins-suspend-richie-incognito-indefinitely-connection-jonathan-martin-incident

guess the defiant and strident tone evidenced by the twitter quote below didn't signal the team and league that he was taking the bullying allegations seriously... maybe ironically, he thought he could bluster and bully his way through it...

"@AdamSchefter Enough is enough If you or any of the agents you sound off for have a problem with me, you know where to find me #BRINGIT"

* if he isn't back in MIA next year, it is unclear if another team would want to take on such an allegedly toxic locker room presence...

martin's reps presumably presented strong and compelling evidence of harrassment, thought to include text messages and at least one voice message.

"The plain terms of the team’s statement indicate that Incognito wasn’t merely suspended pending further investigation. The Dolphins already have determined that Incognito engaged in conduct detrimental to the team. Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team may suspend a player up to four weeks without pay for detrimental conduct. The NFL also may impose discipline for violations of the personal conduct policy and/or other league rules and policies."

incognito can be suspended up to a month by the TEAM under the CBA (potential separate league repercussions are also alluded to in the article below)...

but it is hard to see him returning from this? maybe if he apologized and agreed to undergo counseling of some kind? but possibly admitting guilt in any form could make him more vulnerable to future litigation (from several directions)?

Dolphins move swiftly, decisively against Incognito

Posted by Mike Florio on November 4, 2013, 12:35 AM EST

"So much for Jonathan Martin being concerned about retribution.

On Sunday, the representatives of the Dolphins tackle provided evidence to the team supporting Martin’s contention that he was harassed, specifically by guard Richie Incognito and more generally by the culture of the team’s locker room.

The decision to promptly suspend Incognito for conduct detrimental to the team necessarily means that the evidence tendered by Martin’s camp was strong, and that it was clear. The evidence is believed to include text messages from Incognito to Martin and at least one voice message.

The plain terms of the team’s statement indicate that Incognito wasn’t merely suspended pending further investigation. The Dolphins already have determined that Incognito engaged in conduct detrimental to the team. Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team may suspend a player up to four weeks without pay for detrimental conduct. The NFL also may impose discipline for violations of the personal conduct policy and/or other league rules and policies.

The NFL will review the situation, which means the NFL will investigate. Incognito has rights under the CBA, and he will be entitled to oppose the team-imposed suspension.

While the full story has not yet been told, it’s obvious that the Dolphins have seen and heard enough to believe that Incognito did something wrong, despite his recent rant on Twitter in which he demanded that his name be cleared.

For now, his name has been cleared — indefinitely from the team’s roster."

* the alleged phone message is interesting... just speculating, but if true, and he was stupid enough to leave a threat on the message (something with a composed, zen-like calm characteristic of his career, like - i'm coming after you and i'm going to bite your nose off, etc.), i think that could be treated as a criminal threat (used to be called terrorist threat?)... if so, they can be prosecuted as misdemeanors or felonies... with no priors, maybe the former and probabtion would be more likley, if it came to that... i'm not sure if he has no priors, though, there were reports of trouble in nebraska, but not sure if he was ever convicted of anything...

at any rate, if there is evidence of threats, it could prompt the league to take additional action against incognito... besides being the right thing to do, if they didn't, perhaps they could be vulnerable to future lawsuits (on something like unsafe workplace grounds?)... this has become a high profile issue not just for the dolphins but for the NFL... i could definitely see the league wanting to make an example of him with a more severe form of suspension of their own, longer than the month allowable by the dolphins under the CBA terms.

This story is so confusing. There absolutely has to be something we are not being told. Grown men simply don't bully other grown men to the point of sending weird texts and voicemails especially in the nfl.

I'm not surprised one bit. As soon as I heard Incognito's name was attached to this, I suspected he was a main culprit and it was legit. The guy has been known league-wide as an A-class jerk and one of the dirtiest players since he came into the league. He's the o-line version of Suh, only from what I recall, worse.

What kind of idiot sews discord among his own offensive line? Seriously?

Have you considered the maturity level of these "grown" men? Not to be harsh but the stereotypical category for a football player in today's society would be best described as a "Meathead" most likely.

Sure they do. In fact it seems as if they did in this very case.

Dolphins should have nipped this in the bud and took care of this internally a long time ago. Now they have to play damage control and suspend him to save face, but clearly they knew something was going on.

I hear you, but I am thinking there is a women involved, something like that. Something beyond just singling him out and then texting and calling him. Something had to happen for it to start.

It's also possible (and well established) that incognito is an Ahole and maybe Martin didn't push back and stand up for himself so he was an easy target.

If true then thats just sad that a man would go to those measures just to harass someone. He would just be a worthless human IMO. I still dont understand the "joy" that would bring Incognito to do that.

Most people don't reach their full emotional maturity until their late 20s. For some, never.

The story that appears to be unfolding involves criminal activity (extortion), so it's not just teasing and name-calling.

I'm not sure how true this is, but I read Martin had caught crabs. When he went to sit at a table with the O-linemen they all stood up, like he was contagious or something. If this is the case, then it sounds like all the linemen were in on the ball busting. Maybe Incognito was the ring leader?

Young Dolphins paying for vets' funs
It is through one of the more delicate stories to this point of the season that Miami finds itself in the spotlight. Jonathan Martin's representatives have notified the Dolphins about allegations of player misconduct within the locker room, spurring the team to ask the NFL to launch an independent inquiry late Sunday. ... The latest twist: Young Dolphins players are under pressure to dig deep into their pockets to pay for veterans' social outings, a phenomenon that has put strain on their finances and locker room chemistry, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. One young defensive player, whose privacy the Miami Herald is protecting, is on his way to going broke because he has been unable to say no to the older players, the source said.

I'm sure Incognito is a clown, but if you are going to suspend him, how does Philbin get to stay? This guy would have plainly lost his locker room if this situation was as "out of hand" as alleged.

And not to undersell Martin, but this sort of thing is probably pretty widespread throughout the NFL, and lets be honest, at a relative level, it happens at our jobs too. Maybe the 15K lineman trip to Vegas is having to buy whatever your supervisor's kid is selling. You don't HAVE to do these things, but if its painless enough, you do things that will make your life easier rather than harder.

The bigger light that will be shined is on these 30K rookie dinners. That is a rough tradition, donating 8-9 percent of your salary for these oafs to eat a given meal here and there when you are not guaranteed a long run in the league....

I thought this kind of stuff was done by teenagers, not grown men. Weird...

Some people never leave high school. See ya tough guy - the leaguer will be better without you in it. Try to take that crap to the real world and see how it plays out.

This story really is bizarre. I'm very interested to hear what the real story is once all the facts come out.

I don't really have a problem with young player hazing, but like anything, you have to draw the line somewhere. Unfortunately, most of these guys in the league aren't intelligent enough to know where that line is....

- Expecting your rookie first round pick making $3 Million bucks to pick up a dinner once or twice....fine

- Telling the un-drafted rookie special teamer to pick you up a sandwich or a cup of coffee....fine

- Having the 2nd guy do the thing you asked of the first guy....not fine

Even with the early round picks, things are different now. I could see busting your rookie QB's balls and having him buy some lobsters back when rookie QB's were immediately the 2nd or 3rd highest paid player on the team, but that isn't the case anymore.

And yeah, when it gets to the point of intimidation, its a problem.

Richie Incognito - G - Dolphins
Sources tell FOX Sports that suspended LG Richie Incognito sent text messages and left voicemails with Jonathan Martin "that are both threatening and racially charged in nature."
Incognito was not suspended indefinitely for simple bullying. These texts and voicemails will be shared with the league as both the NFL and the Dolphins investigate the incident. FOX Sports goes as far to say this is an "alleged hate crime." Martin left the team following a prank played by his fellow offensive linemen in the cafeteria last Monday. He has not yet returned. Incognito has a long history of wayward behavior both on and off the field.

This bozo's career is toast.

I know this, whatever team Martin goes to next, no one will mess with him. If Incognito gets another gig ever, which I doubt, he will be the joke of everything.

Ironic, no?
