Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (1 Viewer)

And it helped that there was a video for that one that featured him prominently. Just What I Needed, Let’s Go, etc. predated MTV.
That would have helped, but I didn't have cable or access to MTV until the late '80s

Until I saw them on TV, I also thought the following:

1. C.F. Turner from BTO was black.
2. The lead singer from Skylark was white.
3. That - don't ask me why or how my pea brain made this connection; years of therapy never figured it out - Wolfman Jack was the same person as Ray Charles.

:bag:

Don Quixote:

Bring It On Home to Me - Sam Cooke
(new song)

While I would not call this Cooke's greatest song (A Change is Gonna Come without a doubt), this one is my favorite of his. Cooke's vocals really shine and has a good mix of the gospel and pop that define Cooke (and the birth of soul coming out of that combo) for me. Lou Rawls' backing vocals also great here.

I linked to the studio version as that is the one that I've listened to the most, but I also love this live version from the Harlem Square Club (a great live album). The energy is off the charts and unlike anything he recorded in the studio, with the crowd substituting for Lou Rawls on the call and response portion.

Apparently Billy has been catering to the kids, or something.

Between Corgan's arena tour and the new Netflix series Wednesday, it's been a big couple of months for the Addams Family.
My wife told me the other day that "goth dancing" was trending on Tik Tok b/c of an episode of Wednesday where she goes to a school dance. Apparently the show didn't have the money for a choreographer, so the actress watched a bunch of youtube videos to learn the goth moves. I would have offered my services for free, though I'm not quite as fluid as I used to be.

falguy:

Cat's in The Cradle - Harry Chapin
(duplicate – third vote)
My 19 year old daughter wanted to go to the pub last night for a couple beers, some appy's, and to watch the football game (it has become our go-to on Thursday nights). I told her I wasn't sure I could do it last night. She then texts me a screenshot of Cat's in the Cradle.

We ended up going and having a great time.

Seems like I have a strong dislike for some really popular, and admittedly good songs. 1979 is one of those. As I was thinking about the song, especially in relation to my SP pick yesterday, I think a lot of it is just simply a bit of "that's not MY Pumpkins" sentiment with me. Pumpkins will always be tied to Gish and Siamese Dream for me. That's the sound I feel in love with and prefer, but I realize I am in the minority there. I think it's safe to say similar is going on as to reasons I liked Soundgarden and Primus more than Pearl Jam and Nirvana and other bands that blew up later - it's what I was listening to in HS in the early 90s.
Love Gish and Siamese Dream is my favorite Pumpkins' album (see my Mayonaise pick earlier) - to me, 1979 might be a slight evolution but definitely sounds like the same band. Just emo Billy instead of angry Billy.

Val Rannous:

Lady Marmalade - Pink, Mya, Little Kim, Christina
(Pink and Christina – new song; Mya and Little Kim – new artist)

I had forgotten about this version of the song - it's good. I like Pink's part the best (I'd like hear her do the whole thing - she does some great cover tunes). On another day Labelle's original could have made my list.
And ... Allen Toussaint strikes again! In the producter's booth for Labelle, that is.

I'm anticipating a best new to me from some of you...

So, don't let the world bring you down
Not everyone here is that ****ed up and cold
Remember why you came and while you're alive
Experience the warmth before you grow old

...what a phenomenal track. Outstanding add, @Just Win Baby :hifive:

Smart kid you got there. She played you like a Charlie Daniels fiddle.

So the Garth Brooks may or may not be him, I can't 100% tell but he's not really on Spotify so that's all I got.
I don’t think that’s him but there was a live version of that song by Brooks on Spotify when I did my countdown - doesn’t seem to be there anymore

Yep, that's what I recalled but couldn't find it anymore either. I listened to the youtube and that was the closest comparison, at least to my ears.

The Grand Funk Railroad song looks like the title swapped from Closer to Home (I'm your Captain) to I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home. Also, I could not find a ~5-minute version like the linked youtube, the only versions are 9+ and 10-minute versions, If this isn't the right one I can swap it out.

New Binky had this listed as "Closer to Home," but based on Wikipedia and looking at the album I updated the title as I did. Wiki even mentions the various names the song is given: "ts title has been rendered in various ways across many different Grand Funk albums, including "I'm Your Captain", "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home", "Closer to Home/I'm Your Captain", "Closer to Home (I'm Your Captain)", and "Closer to Home"." I did update the link in my post to the 10-minute version, though. I think what I had was a live, shorter version.

Yeah, this one's always been a mess of a song title. Grand Funk couldn't even figure out their own band name, so getting song titles right may have been beyond them.

(I realize that Mark, Donnie, Mel, & the rest of the players aren't entirely responsible for the "Closer To Home" debacle. I'm blaming it on either Jann Wenner or Billy Joel - or both, which lets me tie up a lot of things in a neat little bow).

I think angry billy is just emo billy when he can't find his black eye liner

Despite all his rage, he is still just a rat in a cage.

Spreadsheet updated to include today's picks.

Not a lot of changes at the top of the charts given all the new material but Marvin and Bruce made a jump.

I won't be updating tomorrow but will try to add Saturday and Sunday sometime Sunday evening.

Did she watch this:

A few favorites from Round 7 not including repeated favorites:

Closer to Home (I'm Your Captain)
Preacherman
Blue Sky
She's Got You
When Doves Cry
Spirit in the Night - I like the other two Bruce songs too, but this one is a personal favorite
You're So Vain
Bring it On Home
Holiday
My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left)
Break on Through (To The Other Side) - Hail to the Lizard King
The Breakup Song - this song reminds me of high school
Lady Marmalade
Shore Leave - I'm curious why the person chose this particular Tom Waits song
Call To Arms

Marvin Gaye is one of my favorite vocalist.

Favorite new to me songs:

That's All There is - I like this a lot. I've never heard of her before. The instrumentation is perfect with the mood of the song.
Satellite - I think I've heard this before, but I don't remember when. It's good.
Don't Swallow the Cap - I've never heard this album by The National, and I should check it out. I like this song.
Wildfire - When I first saw the title I was expecting the 70s song about the horse breaking out of it's stall during a blizzard
New York Kiss - Is this a dance track?

Insert your own pun involving Lucky 7s. I’m too busy listening to music to pick one!

#7s
Recognized by title alone: 20
Sounded familiar: 3
Didn't know: 12

Selected Favorites:
The Warmth (Just Win Baby)
Closer To Home/I’m Your Captain (Binky
Satellite (Hov34)
The Breakup Song (Doug B)

Songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
American Theatric (Manster)
New York Kiss (rockaction)
Preacherman (simsarge)
That’s All There Is (Oliver Humanzee)

I didn’t know Orr sang Just What I Needed until I saw their Live Aid set. It was the only non-Heartbeat City song they played.

I don't know a ton about The Cars - with two guys who sound so much alike I wonder how they figured out who would sing what, and why?
I don’t know. But Ocasek wrote all the songs, so presumably it was his decision.
Ocasek has said before in the past that he gave Ben what he considered the best songs, because Ben had the better voice (which he did). Ben's voice was smoother. If you listen to their debut album, and listen to You're All I've Got Tonight (Ocasek singing lead), and then the next song is Bye Bye Love (Orr singing lead), you can hear that it is two different singers, although they sound similar. Ben then sings lead on the next two songs, one of which is All Mixed Up, and you can really focus in on Orr's vocals in that song.

Also, I may have done a thing. Then been encouraged to post a Last Five Out list for me. More like picking a few from like 50, but still:

No Sleep Till Brooklyn - Beastie Boys
This Is A Call - Foo Fighters
Birdhouse in Your Soul - They Might Be Giants
Kiss Off - Violent Femmes
Dishwatcher - Frank Allison & The Odd Sox (also known as the shoutout to an old local-ish band because why not go ultra-obscure, right?)

New York Kiss - Is this a dance track?

"New York Kiss" is a modern rock/modern dance track. Your ears aren't lying. It's certainly got that metronomic click beat going. A rare feat in rock and roll indeed these days.

But, alas, you really can't dance to it unless you're really good at dancing. "I Turn My Camera On" by Spoon, a straight up disco/rock song, is another thing entirely, and was almost my choice for this. It was made for the disco floor.

My brother just got the monoblock versions of the McIntosh™ tube amps (left and right monoblock amps). He's not sure whether to keep them or sell them because he has solid state monoblocks that he also likes. Awesome stuff.

eta* autocorrect had me at "rare feet." I wish it would stop correcting me. It makes me look bad here.

Finally listened to yesterday's new-to-me songs - only eight of them from that list. They were all at least pretty good. My top choice was Warren Zevon's "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner," which was my favorite of the Zevon songs posted so far.

You've not heard Roland before? Strong recommendation to go right out and buy a copy of the Excitable Boy album from Mr. Zevon - I really don't think there's a bad song on the entire album. We've had 6 Zevon songs picked for the list so far, and 5 are off of Excitable Boy. Big thumbs up, one of my favorite all time albums by any artist.

Sweet. Now that I'm old, I'm big on tubes b/c (a) i don't play stuff as loud so I don't need the power and (b) my ears have gotten really allergic to brighter/clinical stuff. 15 years ago, was all in on solid state.

Just a little catch up rambling from my little spot in the peanut gallery. I've done well walking between the raindrops since my last post -- just a couple dupes.

Sir Duke is my Stevie. Dat bassline kills like few others. Seeing Stevie, head thrown back, swaying to things only he sees, and just feeling it all over. Pure musical bliss, people.

Rosalita is my Bruce. His lyrics and vocals might be the weakest part of the song. It's full frontal E Street with every member doing heavy lifting, especially the big man. A road trip and a carnival of a song. It was the highlight of a dozen "anti-frat boy parties" (sorority girls welcome) in the glory days of Chico State when few dared to challenge us as the nation's best party school. It had an organic way of generating an aggressive mosh pit. By the time her papa said he knew that he didn't have any money we were in full throat and playing some mystery sport on the dance floor. At the hey hey hey hey... pure drunken chaos. All down hill from there in the sweetest and best of ways. Not surprised it's a Doc Octopus pick. Like simey, he's sniped me again and again.

And look at you simey! You must have grinned a week or so ago when I said my favorite pick of the draft was ditkaburgers Man in the Box. So surprising it's me, YOU, and HER on this grunge banger. I love it. I miss Layne as much as any of the "departed to soon".

On a sad note. I did the LA and back thing today. Took my wheelchair bound BiL to a wound doctor in Beverly Hills. He's not much of a music guy. Never left the 70s and, well, it was Sirius/The Blend all day. This station is a half-tick removed from elevator music. At least he likes it so soft you can just recognize the song. I cannot tell you how many of your picks played on that station today, but it was alot, including a few of mine. We really are a bunch of middle-aged dummies.

Dr. Octopus:

Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) - Bruce Springsteen
(new song)
I've avoided this song since the mid-80s. MTV would play the video constantly, and when you're 12/13 years old and hoping for a Bananarama or Motley Crue video, Rosalita was the suck. The only other video in this category was Big Log by Robert Plant. Instant channel changers.

So today, I listened to Rosalita for the first time in decades and tried to keep an open mind. Holy crap, The Hold Steady really do sound like Bruce Springsteen. Mind blown.

I don't even know where to pick up now. With work, Michigan football, World Cup and trying to watch a lot of movies I've fallen way behind here. I am pleased to continue to see such a diverse and surprising bunch of selections though. Lots here I haven't heard or haven't heard enough. Nice work everyone.

That's a beautiful room.

Was going to mention this one if nobody picked it

Birdhouse in Your Soul was on my list the entire way. Then at the last minute I decided to sub it out for Don't Let's Start. Then I couldn't decide. Then, because I spent so much time not deciding, I took them both off the list. Which was dumb. Few songs make me happier - dancing and singing - than Birdhouse in Your Soul. Or Don't Let's Start. One or both.

I know it will be horrifying for the Rannouses and worrierking to hear, but I've never had much interest in Zevon. Still don't, and haven't much enjoyed the songs selected, until this one. Diff'rent strokes and all. Certainly know many people who love him.

Yeah - I’ve tried to limit my negative takes in the thread because who am I to judge other people’s taste AND I’m a musical moron but the Zevon stuff doesn’t do anything for me.

Oh yeah, I'm not trying to be negative, but many of us have come to know each other's tastes over the years and that they're different. Mrs. R, for instance, has made it clear many times that she doesn't like the Beatles. I know most people like Steely Dan, while I just don't get it. Etc. It's no big deal as I don't expect anyone to like exactly what I do. Except simey and landrys hat, because they are unrepentant, recidivist snipers in music drafts. :hot:

Speaking of Steely Dan, I just finished my listen of the new-to-me songs from today of which there were a ton. New-to-mes I particularly liked included the Incubus, Patsy Cline, Floater, Guster, David Ruffin, and Melody Gardot songs. New-to-me songs I also liked were:
-"Spirit in the Night" by Bruce Springsteen
AND
-"Don't Take Me Alive" by Steely Dan

Today was a great playlist, with so much new stuff I loved plus old stand-bys like the ZZ Top, Prince, Tom Waits, Temptations, and Sam Cooke songs.
