Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (4 Viewers)

I'm sticking with being positive in here, but I will admit that one song on the Round 30 playlist made me think it was a Saturday Night Live parody skit when it came on.
The fun part is hearing for the first time, or re-listening to some of these songs......songs I wouldn't pick for my own list, but then I listen and think, "I really dig that!"......for instance, the Patty Loveless song in round of 30 is beautiful! She's pretty awesome, but not usually not on my radar. I'm listening to her this AM.

Yeah, that one is a favorite of mine. Another great story song, very evocative of place and time, which is why I chose it.

I've liked almost every song that I hadn't heard before.

Be honest - my My Chemical Romance pick made you think of SNL's Goth Talk, right?
I liked that song quite a bit - didn't know it.

If it weren't for Clay Pigeons, that would have been my top "new-to-me" choice. Great stuff.

Speaking of Clay Pigeons, OH and I had a little Blaze Foley listening party last night. OH knew of the Merle Haggard cover of "If I Could Only Fly" but didn't realize it was a cover. The Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard cover is even better. Can't get enough of Blaze's stuff right now. We followed that listening party with one for the band, Low. Needless to say, last night was not a dance party. And speaking of Low, time for the #29 picks!

My favorite already-known song today is "Drift Away." Just makes me dance around happy.

I also have great fondness for "Borderline," which reminds me of working at my high school radio station. Madonna's record came in to the station, and we were all immediately obsessed with it. My friend Jill and I choreographed a little dance to "Borderline" that we did all the damn time.

Lots of "new-to-me" on the list today, so Squibby and I will enjoy today's listening party.

How do you get these done so fast? Have you hacked into my computer???

Thanks for all this again.

My top 5 from round 29 excluding my own choice:
At least until I listen to the songs I don't recognize, for my taste, round 29 seems weaker than rounds 30 and 31.

I found Round 30 more appealing as well.

To that point, and not getting into a new exercise when we have a lot to go here, I was thinking of a UK one but Beatles, Stones, Zep not allowed. Something like that. Also had some other, possibly better or possibly worse, ideas.
I'd probably take it one step further and "eliminate" the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who (and maybe even Kinks and Floyd) to make it more interesting.
or leave everyone eligible, but only one song per artist (I've already started making my top 31 uk list)

Agree with one song per artist. I would suggest that there isn't that much difference in UK and "non-American" so would just go with "non-American". I'm working on my list...

Are we actually going to do this after this countdown ends? I was thinking about it, and thinking that we should make qualifiers for that countdown to be the inverse of this one, i.e., any artist not qualified for this ongoing countdown would by definition qualify for the next countdown. Saying "non-American" might imply that no band members could be American... in which case bands like Metallica and Van Halen wouldn't qualify for either countdown.

I also have great fondness for "Borderline," which reminds me of working at my high school radio station
About three years ago I was at Farmer’s Market/store that plays WCBS FM (the oldies) statIon and I heard this song. My heart sunk a little that Madonna was now oldies music.

I think doing another one would be fun, but I'm trying to get through this one before putting too much thought into it. If you and others want to discuss and come to a conclusion, I'll go with whatever the consensus is.

This round seemed more “personal” with only a handful of heavy hitters.

2 of these are higher up in my list (y)

Thanks for posting now! 5 minutes away from traveling all day to the Midwest. I only knew 9 today. Look forward to listening to the list on the plane, unless I Drift Away.

Thanks for the love k4. Drift Away was the last 45 record I ever bought.

  3. @Hov34 In Bloom by Nirvana - this was something that I cut from my list. Hard to go wrong with Nirvana IMO
Honorable mention to @AAABatteries with We're An American Band by Grand Funk Railroad, just love this tune, period.

I tend to be sitting at my computer when you post the list, Spotify open in one monitor, FBGs in another and away I go. I kind of feel like it has to be posted shortly so folks can start listening since I find it easier to go from song to song than clicking a bunch of links. I'm lazy like that :lmao:

I graduated from high school in 1986. Up to that point, I had grown up on what we think of as classic rock today mixed with some 80s rock/pop (think MTV).

The Beastie Boys introduced me to an entirely different kind of music, and I was blown away. I think (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!) was the first song of theirs I heard, but I thought No Sleep was better and remains my favorite song of theirs to this day.

We’re defining “heavy hitters” very differently.

Uruk-Hai:

I've Got Use My Imagination - Gladys Knight & The Pips
I have this too low at 29.

So, yesterday I mentioned my next choice was sort of an answer to "The Thrill Is Gone". I didn't plan on them being back-to-back for that reason, but it fits my warped sense of connections between songs. Where BB was the one ending the relationship in "Thrill", Gladys is singing from the perspective of the one who got dumped here.

The song opens with pounding drums, swirling strings, and braying horns leading the way, then drops off to Knight's muted singing (helped along by gorgeous piano fills). There's no real verse-chorus thing going on and, by the time the second verse hits, there's nothing else "muted" about either Gladys' vocals or the backing. It takes off in a maelstrom of misery, torquing and torquing until all that's obvious is the awfulness of it all. The Pips sound almost demented on their backing vocals. The last third of the record, Gladys is basically singing in tongues and using her voice like a drum - in other words, channeling Otis Redding (I can offer no bigger compliment).

Thank God this record isn't longer because I don't think anyone involved would have survived it. And Gladys Knight's singing here is the equal to anyone, ever. Eat your heart out, emo kids - you ain't topping this performance.

We’re defining “heavy hitters” very differently.

Now you've got me curious.
I’m kind of referring more to the “chalk” top songs/artists of all time. I’d imagine most would define “heavy hitters” that way. I’m not saying these artist/songs are obscure but on the 29 list most don’t stack up to The Doors, Jackson 5, S&G or Madonna level of fame.

It's a huge help. The afternoon (Eastern Time) hours at work (from home) are the perfect time for me to put on today's playlist.

Pip’s Invitation:

Maze -- Phish

They have better jam vehicles for their concerts, but IMO this is Phish's best accomplishment in the studio. It's extremely well composed, the tension of the arrangement and the paranoia of the lyrics match up perfectly, and best of all, it rocks the hell out, with some of the best guitar solos Trey Anastasio put on record. Some people associate Phish with meandering tunes that float off into space, but this is definitely not that.

29 is definately.....different compared to 30 but I like it. A lot actually. That is a good list of songs.

Katy Perry - I didn't pick any of her songs, but if we are admitting guilty pleasures, I will stop and listen to just about all of her stuff. Catchy. Schmaltzy. Sometimes rather ridiculous but in a fun pop way. She certainly has a voice.

@Just Win Baby - great pick with Beastie Boys. Mad at myself for not remembering that album when I did this. I abused the hell out of that thing when it came out. Probably ended up buying it 2 or 3 times the CD got so scratched.

Squibby and I just finished our listening party of today's "new-to-us" songs. In a feat that is unlikely to be duplicated, we liked all of them at least a moderate amount. Nice! Squib has chosen the Sublime song as his favorite - he seemed to be dancing around most to that one. As for me, Blaze Foley is the overwhelming winner, with the rest in a tie for second. No idea how I've missed Foley throughout my life, as it appears that song has been covered by several of my favorite artists.

Yeah, I always thought it was a John Prine song until i watched his Austin City Limits show and he said it was a Blaze Foley cover. link
I found this version on a “Jon Prine Covered” playlist. Not as bad as I would have guessed from a Michael Cera (yeah that one) record.

Anyway, the point is others think it’s a Jon Prine cover as well.

Here's that entire CoC album. Released in '94. Meant to be listened to loudly.

For the 2nd round in a row I was a part of a double dip, but I like my chances of this not being a threepeat!

A Beastie Boys cut was always a necessity, but I spent more time than I care to admit figuring out which one. Not gonna play spoiler as I suspect there may be more coming and I'm curious if any of the others in my queue get dropped by others. Ultimately settled on this because it is just ********ed fun to middle age rap along with this one.

Y'all suckers write me checks and then they bounce
So I reach into my pocket for the fresh amount
See, I'm the long-leaner, Vincent the Cleaner
I'm the illest mother****er from here to Gardena
Well, I'm as cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce
You've got the rhyme and reason, but got no cause
But if you're hot to trot, you think you're slicker than grease
I've got news for you crews, you'll be sucking like a leech

@Dr. Octopus
I'm sticking with being positive in here, but I will admit that one song on the Round 30 playlist made me think it was a Saturday Night Live parody skit when it came on.
Be honest - my My Chemical Romance pick made you think of SNL's Goth Talk, right?
I was thinking Sublime....theres a bunch of talking at a party or something in the intro
No, I already had said that I liked that song a lot.
