ANNOUNCE:

I'm not going to post the #5s until Monday. That will allow (1) falguy to catch up on playlists, (2) Hawks64 to recover from illness, we hope, and (3) a very pleasing Monday-Friday #5-#1 countdown next week, capping it off on Friday!

Tomorrow I'll post the answers to some earlier teasers (those that won't spoil anything to come), maybe some additional teasers or analysis, and if I have time, a surprise fun(?) exercise.

Today I'm watching soccer and then going to a winery to make a wreath while drinking wine. :)

On a related note my 5 idiots are starting another countdown in our text chain on Jan 1.
Since we did US artists last time - we are doing top 31 songs by artists/bands from the British Isles - England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland (whether they want it or not) and while I don’t expect anything to come from them all the minor Isles would be eligible as well.
No other restrictions but like here l’ll keep myself to one song per artist/band.

Just some food for thought if were doing another one - I don’t think I’ll post the results live each day again so as not to “spoil” the FBG countdown - assuming we’re doing one.

This is exactly what I had suggested for our next one!
I won’t post mine then - don’t necessarily want to anyway.
Although I can give you mine and the other 4 lists for our countdown.
Chap is taking this one more seriously he’s already saying he’s stuck on 45 songs and he’s only ranked Pink Floyd so far. ;)

And he's still a zero.

Why don't people like Corgan? It seems to be a widely accepted opinion but I honestly have no idea why.

Unrelated note, saw Pumpkins last year at Sea Hear Now festival. It was at the end of the day, I'm going on 50 and was in the sun drinking/smoking all day. I remember almost nothing about SP, which is very unfortunate.
I heard their set from the raised front patio area of the tall building across the street, which is an elderly living facility (I don’t live there, I’m not that old). I could see them a little but very small - they sounded great.

Pumpkins closed down a festival sometime mid last decade. Crowd had been lively all day long in a packed house. We departed about 6 songs into their set... after about 60% of the rest already bailed. They were awful.

Corgan used to always whine about how the punkins didn't get their due or whatever as one of the top 90's bands along with the Soundgardens/Nirvana's/etc.....I've also heard he is difficult to work with, and just kind of an ***.......then he sings, and it's like this awful screeching.

Speaking of Steely Dan, I just finished my listen of the new-to-me songs from today of which there were a ton. New-to-mes I particularly liked included the Incubus, Patsy Cline, Floater, Guster, David Ruffin, and Melody Gardot songs. New-to-me songs I also liked were:
-"Spirit in the Night" by Bruce Springsteen
AND
-"Don't Take Me Alive" by Steely Dan

Today was a great playlist, with so much new stuff I loved plus old stand-bys like the ZZ Top, Prince, Tom Waits, Temptations, and Sam Cooke songs.

I'll be honest, it was neck and neck between Don't Take Me Alive and The Caves of Altamira both off of The Royal Scam album which is yet another masterpiece by Steely Dan. And so then, to me, the song has a lot more meaning and depth if you listen to it and you know what it's about. I had never heard of Altamira but I loved the hell out of the song so years and years ago I had looked it up, it's pretty interesting.

In the same spirt of archaeology, however this time some song archaeology, with regards to "Don't Take Me Alive", years and years ago I was more curious about the guitar player in that song because, something about that introduction just sounded so damned familiar, I couldn't put my finger on it and drove me nuts for the longest time. I think one of the first things I ever looked up in a search engine was "Don't Take Me Alive" guitar player and, of course, it's Larry Carlton. Okay, who is that and why is his playing so familiar to me, hell, I had never heard of the guy before? Well, as it turns out, he's quite an amazing and accomplished session player, you gotta check out his wiki. Anyway, I had never heard of him but I used to hear his solo on the radio when I was a kid (child of the 80's) from a familiar song. And it turns out, he's the guy from the Hill Street Blues theme song. I always liked the song when I was a kid (it used be on TV all the time, another amazing jingle from Mike Post who did the A-Team, Magnum P.I., The Greatest American Hero, etc.) but every now and then you'd hear the full song on the radio. It's a neat tune but the solo at the 1:17 mark on is pretty spectacular, you gotta give it a tumble when you get a minute.

Although I can give you mine and the other 4 lists for our countdown.

Happy to take all five for our countdown! Maybe we could start ours Feb. 1, and you could give me some in advance as you guys go through it, so that I'm not trying to add all five plus Doug's at the last minute. We can figure it out.

Sounds good. I definitely want to see what Chap does when he's not doing shtick.

Maybe he'll draft Hit Me With Your Rhythm S(h)tick.

Our GB Hawks64 woke up sick today, so we’ll need another volunteer to put together the playlist after I post. @simey ? Anyone?
I don't mind doing it. I'm going out of town at 1:30 to see a band called Yarn tonight with some friends, but I imagine you'll have it up well before then, and I'll do it.
Are the playing at the Knitting Factory?
It's a special holiday event called the Yuletide Yarn Ball. not really
I heard The Stray Cats used to play there.

I don't know enough about the recording process to have any idea why this is, but Otis' records were consistently the most raggedy-sounding Tier Ones of the '60s. They seem to be off-key and out of tune. Sam & Dave's records, by comparison - same folks in the band and on the boards - sound much tighter. I dunno, but I have to think this was intentional on Redding's part. Maybe he was the Ramones of the 1960s?

Anyway, if you're gonna get into this amazing singer.......this ain't a bad place to start.

Michael Jackson
(new artist)

Really surprised this is his first appearance.
Ditto. I wonder if it was Thriller fatigue, the accusations against him, both, or something else.

If our countdown went out to 100 I would certainly have something from the Off the Wall album in there.

For me, I had one of his songs in my top 36 as I was building it, but enough songs slotted in above it that it got pushed out. He might have had one in my top 50 if we had gone that far, top 75 for sure.

My top 6 from round 6 excluding my own choice:
Possibly the best round yet. Of course, three of these songs were in my top 21, and I limited myself to one song per artist, so could not take two of the others because I chose another for each... so not surprising I really like this group.

And Steve Miller. 😬

Also, I may have done a thing. Then been encouraged to post a Last Five Out list for me. More like picking a few from like 50, but still:

No Sleep Till Brooklyn - Beastie Boys
This Is A Call - Foo Fighters
Birdhouse in Your Soul - They Might Be Giants
Kiss Off - Violent Femmes
Dishwatcher - Frank Allison & The Odd Sox (also known as the shoutout to an old local-ish band because why not go ultra-obscure, right?)

Making sure @Hov34 sees this one for addition to the "Last Five Out" playlist. :)

I’m ok with just giving you mine, really - to avoid the whole piecemeal thing.

Either is fine with me. You wouldn't need to send me the five every day or anything. Maybe just something like #31-#5 on that day, and then give me the top four at the end. Or just send yours. Whatever you decide.

Accusations against him for me. I can’t really disassociate his songs from that when I hear it nowadays. Would have given more thought if listing greatest songs instead of favorite songs.

I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about, and I bet Krista does too.

And simey.
I looked it up - I always thought they are Australian. Not sure why I thought that.

They were living there (since they were teens, I think) when they started playing music in public.

ETA: I looked it up and was off. They moved there when pre-teens and had already been doing some public performances before that.

There’s been a few Jackson 5 appearances.
I did pick one of his songs, but I picked the cover that I prefer. I did consider "Thriller", but I think I like it for the dancing and Vincent Price as much as anything. The rest of his stuff just didn't really do it for me.

Guilty pleasure: WHOOOOOOOA HALFWAY THERE...
Pleasant surprise: Audioslave - Show Me How To Live. I wasn't the only one to isolate Audioslave for their Cornell pick! This was 20 year old MAC's favorite of theirs at that time.
Randon comment: holy ****, that was Steve Miller and it didn't suck?!
When's our turn for the mdeal stand?!: Spoon - good add, but not good enough. Maybe we'll get one in the top 5 though.
Bronze: Lucina Williams - Righteously. Happy to finally see a Lucinda Williams contribution too. This wasn't the one that lingered to the final cut, but it's a spectacular track.
Silver: Bangles - Eternal Flame. A beautiful ballad that flows so naturally into...Smells Like Teen Spirit? That transition was only one upped by Jane's Addiction's epic into What A Wonderful Workd. I think I'm gonna enjoy drafting in front of @falguy as we close this thing out.
Gold: Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World. After 23 snubs maybe Nirvana will medal from here out, but...we're gonna need some In Utero.

Added, thanks!

It really is, so sexy, but no Sonos Roam. :)

scorchy tell me about dat amp and doze speaks ! ?

years ago in one of the audiophile talks here i posted about an old 60s console i nabbed at the goodwill in terrible shape complete with mouse poo. I really just wanted the EL84 tube amp, but was considering full restoration with new tech goodies and sliding a sub in where the turntable was. When i finally got around to cleaning it up and replacing the obviously shot wiring, for grins I wired a bluetooth dongle to the source and stayed with the ancient 4 way speakers. Plugged it in, put on Dark Side. A couple guys were with me and we all made eye contact, like wth? It sounded really beautiful, warmer than most want, but really rich and detailed. The it went snap crackle pop and into storage. Your pic inspired me to get it out and figure out what fried. i know the tubes are fine. Gorgeous set up, bro.

So the Garth Brooks may or may not be him, I can't 100% tell but he's not really on Spotify so that's all I got.
@simey Got the live version for you
The Grand Funk Railroad song looks like the title swapped from Closer to Home (I'm your Captain) to I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home. Also, I could not find a ~5-minute version like the linked youtube, the only versions are 9+ and 10-minute versions, If this isn't the right one I can swap it out.

yes - I was lazy and didn't look up the correct title - and yeah the song is 9+ minutes. Thanks!
