Frustrations for commissioners (1 Viewer)

I'm a commissioner of 3 leagues and it's frustrating when owners are slow in signing up for the new year despite numerous emails being sent. Its alway "yea I want to play just haven't signed up yet" or I haven't been on the site yet and the draft is 1 week away. Obviously if your on this message board your likely into fantasy football more than the average Joe but please be considerate of your commish, check your emails daily if not multiple times during the day. Take action and play with some passion.

every league has a different degree of hardcore-ness in it.

local leagues commonly have an owners or two who jsut update their lineups on sunday morning, etc.

Put activity rules in your bylways.

Everyone has their own lives with their own priorities, which often change. It's not fair for you to upset if your expectations haven't been expressed. If they have been expressed, and they are not followed, both parties should be able to move one without issue. In that case, you need more active owners, and he or she needs a more relaxed league.

Edit: I think I misunderstood you, the first time I read it.

It sounds like you are organizing a yearly re-draft, not a dynasty league draft. My bad. That would be annoying, and I would consider replacing the owners.

I've been running a league for 16 years as the commish' and I've experienced just about every problem that can happen. I'm with you. Uninterested players are very frustrating. Some people will tell you to just 'replace' them, but if your league is like mine, we're all friends and it would cause more problems than it would solve to 'replace' one. I've approached people before and asked them if they're still enjoying the league, and regardless their answer, point out that they haven't been very active and ask if there's anything you can do to help them get back into it. Sometimes just brining it up in that manner will get them to either bow out or put a little more into it.

I have the same frustrations. I am Commissioner of a local league and experience the same apathy. We do have activity requirements for message board activity/posting and impose fines for lack of participation.

There is not much you can do but apply some peer pressure. People have their own priorities and FF isn't usually at the top.

I've decided that all you can really do is define what the relative "temperature" of your league is (in terms of intensity/competitiveness) and then use your rules/by-laws to outline the minimum expectations of owners based on that.

My league is not super intense so the two key "milestones" are:

1. Be signed up by "Date X" or I start looking for replacements; and

2. Have fewer than X incomplete line-ups in a season or risk being replaced.

Don't draw lines in the sand that you're prepared to let people cross. Personally, I can't afford to sweat anything beyond the two things above but as I said, individual mileage may vary...

I don't care if you don't trade, barely check in and set your lineup.

BUT when send out numerous emails and texts about draft date, rule changes, website changes WOULD IT KILL YOU TO RESPOND!!!!

Good advice...we're all friends or friends of friends in our league. There have been some occasions where we've 'gently' suggested an increased level of participation for everyone. Sometimes that communication has to be 1-on-1, behind the scenes as to not embarrass or single out in public a specific owner. Generally the owner(s) in question get the message and to be frank...are relieved a bit, and they've bowed out during the off-season and we've found someone to fill the spot. Sometimes the offending owner stays in the league out of obligation and feels like they have to stay in. If you offer a way out while still giving them the right to decide for themselves, it allows them to leave on their termsBecause the league has gained stature over time, we now set an expectation level now with incoming owners coming in and get their buy-in of what we expect. Not everyone is rabid to be sure, but everyone is engaged. It's taken a few years to get to where we are though.

One of these leagues is a small local league made up mostly of a bunch of us former fastpitch softball players. One guy used a cell phone to call in his picks and we set up new guidelines to deal with that and then when he missed our league meeting/party following the season because he was coyote hunting, with a few beers in us, he was voted out of the league. To this day the guy who was my teammate and my catcher still holds a grudge against me. He was upset as commish I would let such a vote take place.

Uninterested owners are definitely frustrating, and I think a lot of owners shrug off emails this early in the preseason, figuring, "the draft ain't for two more weeks, so I have plenty of time." Sure, as the commish, you want to get everyone on the site and ready to go, but it doesn't always work that way since many will never think of FF as anything more than a cool thing to do on the side rather than a priority.

everyone plays in more than one league usually so your league might be lower on the priority/interest of this particular person. You should return the favor. Invite more than the number of spots, first come first serve.

Missed the postseason party so he was voted out? Yeah, that's pretty lame.

I think many of these cases reflect on a poor commissioner more than a poor owner.

I understand the frustration as I am currently going through the exact same thing but as long they set their line ups, pay their money, sign up in time for the draft and respond to trades then it's their team and they have the right to do with it as they please.

However, it drives me insane when it's those guys who are complaining to me when I see them in person.

i used to feel the same way but ive learned to live with it. as lomg a they set their lineup every week thats all i care about

one if a guy is out hunting yotes you do not vote him out of the league you tell him good job on plinking varmints number two that is lower than the belly of a eastern hognose snake and that is the snake that rolls around on its back and barfs on itself to scare you so long story short i am saying that kicking a yote hunter out is lower than low and just as bad as taking a puke on yourself well you roll aroud take that to the bank brohans

:lmao:  :lmao: That was awesome. I read it once and had to stop so I could laugh then I read it two more times just trying to understand what you were writing. Great post.

i can sympathize. never been a commish, but just being a team owner, i get frustrated at the lack of effort. i just want an honest effort from everyone, otherwise i feel like i'm wasting my time. though ffb is a hobby, it's still competition, and if other teams aren't competing...well, what are we playing for? this season, i started a league with some buddies. to combat inactivity, we have weekly cash payouts. $5 for weekly high scorer and $5 for a rotating "awards" such as: high rb total of the week, high qb score of the week, etc. i am hoping that this will entice everyone to put in a good effort and play with some passion, if only to win a few dollars. this way, even teams whom are likely out of the playoffs still have something to play for. i hope the plan is successful.
