General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

As far as antagonists go, the Silver Hand are a complete joke.

I get the feeling they wanted you to join up with the Companions early in the game, not at level 30.

Some of their perks, like Skyforge Steel, are lost on a guy holding a Daedric greatsword. But I could see it being real cool around level 10 or 15.

Poor Lydia walked right into that Dragons mouth last night. Too bad, not like i was getting tired of her sarcastic greeting..."i am sworn to carry your burden" She has already been replaced by Benor...lets hope he can respect his leader.
She would fight though. Now I'm the thane of Riften and while the chick they gave me practically says "I love carrying your ####", I never see her when I'm fighting something.

Anyone else just say "EFFE IT" to those annoying treasure maps? I found like one treasure. The rest are just a pain in the butt to read.
I've found two that were really easy. Have two more on me and have no clue what they are showing me.
The first map I found, I knew right where to go. No treasure. Heard it was a bug. That was a few updates ago. Went back not to long ago and still nothing there. So now I don't even bother looking at the maps. I do assume however that the treasure will usually be somewhere neqarby where you find the maps? Or was that just coincidence with the first one? Either way, at this point in the game, I doubt it would be worth the bother to even track them down from what I have heard about the contents.

Yeah Lydia is more than willing to get in there and mix it up. Even when she's been asked to wait. I can appreciate that.

This Benor guy picked a fistfight with me, then when i beat him down he offered up his assistance. Hoping this means he is willing to mix it up. Though i don't fully trust him to hold anything valuable yet

That made me lol..beat the snot out of him and his next line is "You've been a good friend to me"

3rd dragon taken down!!! Still haven't made it to the Greybeard place. I keep getting sidetracked by caves and then I have to go back to Whiterun and sell everything. I need to buy a house, these dragon bones are freakin heavy.

Question: If Heavy Dragon Armor has a lesser armor rating than Daedric Heavy Armor, what's the point?Unless you want to look like a Hannibal Lector freak wearing a skeleton, then I get it. But other than that....Am I missing something?
Only advantage to it is the weight. Daedric chestplate gives you 49 armor rating for 50 weight. Dragonplate is 46 armor rating, but the weight is only 40. 3 less armor for 10 less weight. The helmet is an even bigger gap... Daedric helmet is 23 armor for 15 weight, dragonplate is 22 armor for 8 weight. Half the weight, only one less point of AR. Gauntlets are weird, the Daedric is both lighter and better armor.Of course if you're using Steed Stone or a perk to make worn heavy armor weightless, weight doesn't matter and you can just stick with Daedric.
I need to find the Steed Stone. Never found it with any of my characters.
There is a book that is useful in finding the locations of the various stones without having to resort to the web.

so i hauled lydia up to see the graybeards and then fast travelled around to clean up some of the misc. quests I picked up and to buy some crap and somewhere along the way she didn't make it. Where do I find her again? I want to start cracking heads again and could use the backup.

You guys know that you have to dig up some of the treasures, right?
The only treasure I looked for, I wiki'd as I knew I was in the right spot. It was just a chest sitting behind a bush. No digging necessary. Until that one shows up, I won't bother searching for others. But no, I didn't know some were buried. AAAAAAARGH!!!!! (That's my pirate shout)

If she doesn't show up after fast travel, the normal spot is back in your home if you have one in Whiterun. Otherwise I would assume she'd show up in Drgaon's Reach or whatevr it is called where you first got her.

Picked up the game last night and got about 4 hours in. I started with a Redguard (Virtus) and this game seems awesome! I passed a note between a couple of people before telling the lady these dudes were trying to eff with her then I did a gold claw mission which was awesome.

I don't know that I fully understand the leveling up at the moment but it seems simple enough to get.

I'm trying to use this guys forge at Riverrun(I think?) but I dont have any of the materials. Is there any close by? I'd like to upgrade my sword a bit before I go talk to some guy in Winterful (I think lol).

Any tips are much appreciated!

Right now I'm only level 3 and I usually roll with a sword and some fire but I want to use the bow a bit more too for some versatility. I also have one perk (or maybe two)...any suggestions on where to start with these given the above? I'm new to RPG's and the constalation seems a bit overwhelming.

TIA

She should be sitting at the table in the Jarls castle eventually if you don't have a house. Took about two days game time when I last lost her.

For me I didn't spend any perks until I figured out what I liked doing. Once I figured out that I liked to smith, sneak, snipe and enchant then that's where I put my perks. I too am a Redguard, which wasn't the best choice for sneaky archer but it's worked out well for me so far.As far as the forge (Riverwood), talk to the guy and he should have you do a bunch of things, once completed there should be a bunch of material for you to take for free. If the item doesn't say steal on it you can freely take it. And at Level 3 you should have two perks, you get one each time you level up.

How are you guys enchanting all this stuff? Correct me if I'm wrong, but to 1st enchant something, you have to destroy an object with that enchantment, then enchanment the item you want. I hear you guys talking about enchanting mage robes with armor and stuff like that, but the only enchanted stuff I've found so far is like stamina reduction, or frost damage. Where are the better enchantments?

Usually at the end of a dungeon or cave there is the big BG. They usually have weapons with enchantments, or if they don't there are chests with enchanted weapons or armor. That's where I get my stuff.

Really depends on your character. A magika regen is great for mages, not so much for a melee guy. And I have found most of the items with enchantments on dungeon crawls, and will only disenchant when I know will be able to enchant at the same level the item is or higher. Ex I found ebony gauntlets of major archery which increased archery 25%. I didn't disenchant that until I could enchant it at least at 25%. Now that I am at 100 enchanting I can enchant at a really high level so I disenchant most of what I find. For making money Banish is a great enchantment, you can enchant a dagger with banish and make 700-1000 on each dagger, problem is you have to travel all over hell to sell them all since most merchants only have 1000 gold.

I see the love for the Steed Stone, but what about the Lover's Stone? 15% bonus to skill advancement all the time is pretty slick.

Look around and buy some stuff to disenchant from the vendors. Mine iron, skin wolves and make Iron daggers, then enchant the daggers, which will increase there resale value this builds up your bank-smithing-enchanting-and level

First off, just to be clear, you only have to disenchant one item, and then you know that enchantment for good. i.e. You don't have to disenchant a fire weapon each time you want to enchant one. Seems obvious but, given your post, just wanted to be sure that's clear. In addition to what others have said, you can also BUY enchanted weapons at various blacksmiths. I wanted to be able to enchant soul trap in to my bow. As I could never find a soul trap weapon dungeon diving, I bought one from a vendor and disenchanted it to make my own weapon. Though my enchanting was weak at the time, and the weapon I disenchanted would cast soul trap for 30 seconds versus the 5 seconds I could enchant, I did it anyways as the bow would always capture the soul so long as I used it to get the kill. So it was worth the tradeoff to me. Point being, you can buy weapons with enchantments you want. You don't necessarily have to find them.Edit: Curse you MH, you beat me to it...

Some stuff I find, much of it I buy. I printed a list of all the enchantments and I tick them off when I learn them so when I see an item for sale I can quickly check if it has an enchantment I don't know. Not that you need to learn them all, there's probably only about 10-15 that you might want to use. Pretty much every time I pass a blacksmith or merchant who sells weapons and armor I check to see what they have. There are some enchantments that are hard to get, like Muffle, where frequently looking at merchant inventories will increase your odds of finding it.For money making, Damage Stamina is a good one for low level. Turn Undead is another. The best two are Banish and then Paralyze, but they don't show up until higher levels. As far as stuff worth learning for your own equipment:Frost/Fire/Shock damage.ParalyzeAbsorb HealthFortify SmithFortify AlchemyFortify (whatever your weapon type is, one or two handed or both)Fortify (whatever your armor type is)Fortify PickpocketFortify LockpickingFortify SneakFortify Carry WeightFortify Health / Magicka / StaminaFortify Magicka Regen (for mages)Fortify Block (if you use a shield)Fortify (mage school type i.e Destruction)MuffleI found that Fortify Health Regen was worthless as the rate is too slow even at maxed out enchanting levels and multiple items enchanted with it, you are better off just fortifying your health. I don't know if Stamina regen would be worth it for a sword swinger or not.It is not worth learning the dual mage sphere + magicka regen from mage robes. When you try to enchant it yourself you get crappy results. You do better if you max out enchanting and get the dual perk, and just enchant the two effects on an item individually.Smith and Alchemy it is good to make some gear to give you bonuses for those and just throw them on when using those abilities. You can make 4 items for each including ring and amulet.I think it is worth also making some gear with Fortify Lockpick so you can throw on before tackling a Master level lock. Be wary of Fortify Pickpocket though, at higher levels if you further increase your skill it actually lowers your chance to pickpocket an item. You can check the odds with and without such an item and see which is better.

Also, know that you can enchant Jewelry (ring, necklace, circlet) and you can add some nice enchants to that too!I have a +25% 2H Ring, +25% 2H Necklace, in addition to the other enchantments I have on my sword/armor

Almost forgot... some character types may want to learn a couple of Resist Fire/Frost/Shock to put on boots.

You can do one-handed and two-handed, carry weight, sneak, muffle, or fortify stamina. That's really about it that's worthwhile for boots. So a mage who doesn't care about sneaking or carry weight may want to throw some elemental resistance on there. Can't do generic resist magicka on boots though which is too bad.

Actually, melee characters might even want to do up Resist Magick to get up to 100% on it, though I haven't made such a character yet so not sure if that's a good use of your enchantment slots or not. I didn't think it was worth it as a mage anyway.

Does resist frost help against an ice spike through the neck?

Anyone have any advice on when, and if, it's worth pursuing Shouts?

I only have the Unrelenting Force (first word) from the beginning of the game, and I presume it's worth mastering that shout, at least. But there are 20 IIRC, and that would equate to a) killing 60 dragons and b) doing a LOT of side questing into those 60 locations. Anyone have strong views about Shouts you MUST learn and those worth skipping? Also, does it help to pursue them earlier in the overall game or should you wait until you're further along in the main quest?

follow up to this question, can you use a shout only once per day? I think i have this mixed up with something else i can use only once per day

You can use it again after a brief cool down period. How long that period is depends on the strength of the shout, but it is never more than 30 - 45 seconds.

I don't know how many of the shouts but I've learned, but over half definitely. I sought them out, diving into every barrow I saw. Generally speaking, they're a nice perk but they don't do that much. The two that I use almost exclusively are Ice Form to freeze guys to give me time to run, heal, and/or recover magicka and Become Ethereal to jump off cliffs rather than pick my way down. Sometimes Windsprint or whatever it is can be neat as it will get you across open spaces to treasures/areas that are otherwise inaccessible. I kind of was liking the Slow Time one but that got bugged so I only know the first word of it.

I don't think I really use any of the others. On rare occasions, the Detect Aura or whatever one but that's pretty rare.

The only one that I suppose it really matters when you learn it would be the Windsprint one because it opens up some stuff you couldn't otherwise get to. Otherwise, whenever you find it, you find it. The ones that you need to move forward in the MQ you get taught as needed.
I think you undervalue probably the most useful shout in the game, Marker for Death. Maybe you are far enough along that you are one shotting everything, even dragons, in which case disregard. But Marked for Death is a FABULOUS shout. It has made Boss fights and Dragon battles infinitely easier. Any time I face a dragon, the FIRST thing I do is unleash this shout on it. After that, it's a matter of taking it down before anyone else does, even town guards. It is amazing how much more vulnerable the traget becomes after hitting it with one of these.

Yes, if you have, say, 50% resist frost, then you'd only take half as much damage from an ice spike through the neck.

Tip: If you want to find more shouts. Shout in a city and you'll get a letter delivered from a "friend" telling you where to find one.

This game is taking over my life. Brought my xbox with me on a 3 overnight work week. Level 48.5 but have only finished the riften guild quest line so far. About 3/4 of the way through the other quest lines and have no idea where i am in the main story. Ridiculous how massive this game is and how addicting it is. Purchased oblivion game of the year yesterday...

AbsolutelyShouts are the whole purpose of the game IMO. I use them ALL the time in combat

I have used shouts very infrequently. The Whirlwing Sprint one you're forced to use here and there, so I almost don't count that. Become Ethereal is a nice timesaver for when you'd rather just jump off a cliff than to climb down the slow way. The only other one that I really recommend is Slow Time. That one is actually pretty good and I should use it more often than I do.

Edit: As far as finding shouts goes, I think by the time I finished all the major quest lines (main, thieves guild, mages college, civil war, companions, dark brotherhood) and all the daedric quests, I had learned all but one possible shout. Not all the words to all those shouts, but I at least had one word for each.

We got any superdorks here who played Arena or Daggerfall?

:hifive:I have played every single game. Daggerfall was in optometry school. Damn skeletons were scary and using a bow was beyond useless.

Not my type of game but Skyrim has been acquired. Figure new monitor deserves a new game.

GOing to nerd it up tomorrow

Wow, walked into Dustman's Cairn at level 13 last night. After clearing the dungeon out and going back to White Run and leveling smithing up to 60 I am now Level 20. That was a productive night. Ended up going to Riften and starting the Thieves Guild quests last night.

BTW, is there anything better than breaking into all the shops and stealing everything blind at night? I dont know why, but it is so fun...

Any tips as to the best places to break into for good loot?

How do I get my pickpocketing up? I am so worried about getting caught that I dont even try. It seems like the best chance I ever have is about 52%.
