General Malaise "vs." reading comprehension ; also some talk of skyim and the elder scrolls (1 Viewer)

I thought this was a free upgrade? At least it is on Steam if you have all the DLC. Is it not free for console hrs copy folks?

It sounds like while there are some mods already that will work against it, two of the most important, SKSE (Skyrim Script Extender) and SkyUI, are not ready yet.

Without SKSE a lot mods can't be ported to the new version. It adds a lot of extra functions the original game didn't have that the more complicated mods depend on. Including SkyUI.  SkyUI is a much better user interface.   (Edit to add:  SkyUI is also important as it has a screen for Mod Configurations that other mods use to let you go adjust settings in game easily.)

I think I have bought everything to where I get the new one for free, but don't think I'll bother with it until the mod makers have had a chance to catch up.  The SKSE team said they are going to come up with a new version. SkyUI makers haven't committed but might pass the torch to someone else to do it.

This is what I read.  Though it sounds like it's a whole new install too.  It won't overwrite your old one.  And you can grab an old saved game to use in the new one only if it is unmodded.

There's a Destruction perk that staggers people. It's the best mage perk since it lets you backpedal and keep enemies at a distance.
Yea, you have to get that asap, for sure.

If you get your enchanting to 100, you can enchant armor/robes/jewelry to get your mana cost to 0 for two schools of magic.

So you have to start from lvl 1 if your game was modded?

Going with a mage for the first time ever in this series. Any tips or suggestions??
You can spam Alteration (get gear that helps first) by using Detect Life in a packed area.  I usually do it in Riften.  You can max it out pretty quickly and throw perks into other areas fairly early on.

You can conjure weapons in Conjuration and have that tiny bit more carry weight.

Dragonscale armor with a Destruction mage looks awesome in the kill cam. :nerd:

Destruction magic my man. Fire, Ice and lighting. It's bad ###.

Also learn Alchemy well to create all your own health, stamina and mana potions as well as buff's, poisons etc for you and your weapons.

Enchantments are also very helpful and go to the College of Winterhold quest line as early as possible in the game to to that entire quest line.

I was a mage. Did the college of wintersomething. I would just conjure up a bunch of stuff and let them do my battle as I watched eating popcorn from afar.

My favorite mage to play is a sorcerer build. I get tired of just standing back casting spells. Sometimes it's fun go spell in one hand, sword in the other, in your face. Two examples to spin off of to suit your play style.

Alternate start - live another life. You skip the whole Helgan thing, and get a different starting area that you can choose. You can start as a new member of any of the guilds (you'll start at the end of the "initial" quest). a criminal, an owner of property, shipwrecked, a vampire, etc. Good for roleplaying.

Lets say I go home and pick this up on the way (or DL for the new kids), how do I check out these mods you are talking about. Then how would I add them

https://www.vg247.com/2016/10/27/skyrim-special-edition-mods-list-xbox-one-ps4/

Skyrim: Special Edition brings mods to console players at last. Unfortunately, it’s not super obvious how you actually get them, and Googling just generates a stack of headlines rather than anything useful.

Don’t worry, cats: I have wrestled the Internet into submission and figured out how you actually get console mods for Skyrim: Special Edition. All you have to do is visit the Skyrim mods section of Bethesda.net and set a filter for your platform of choice.

Once you’ve found a mod you like (and any it depends on), you can click the “add to library” button to kick off the process of making it available in Skyrim: Special Edition on your console. You’ll need a Bethesda.net ID linked to your console ID to complete the process.

At time of writing there are 25 Skyrim: Special Edition mods for PS4, but 90+ for Xbox One.

The reason for the discrepancy is that Skyrim: Special Edition mod support is different on the two platforms – PS4 mods can’t use external assets, so that limits what creators are able to do. That’s why you only get 1GB for Skyrim mods on PS4, but 5GB on Xbox One.

This a bit disappointing for PS4 users but we should probably accept the compromise Bethesda and Sony settled on, since for a while there it looked like there would be no mod support on PS4 at all for Skyrim: Special Edition and Fallout 4.

Skyrim: Special Edition launches on Friday, but the demand for mods is already high – probably because console players have been gazing at the scene with longing for like, decades.

Expect both Skyrim: Special Edition mod lists to populate markedly over the next few weeks as mod authors bring the goods.

You can also just do it right from the game's menu - besides, load / save / settings / etc, there will be a "mods" option. Choose that, and start browsing. The ones you choose to download automatically become downloaded and active. If you read the descriptions of them, some may tell you where in the load order they need to be (which, if you look on the bottom of the screen, there's a load order option.)

If it seems intimidating, I suggest just starting with one - start with one that adds something new, like a town, a house, etc. Then go to it in the game and once you see it, you'll think "omg, this is amazing... what else is there??"

I loaded up a bunch last night - the alternate start (I'll start in the dark brotherhood - he was sent to the Skyrim office as a punishment), a new town, the unofficial patch, better dialog (that one said load it near the end, i think), more gold for vendors, another house, one that makes the map better, etc. Later I'll add bigger quests, etc.

PS4 mods are going to be extremely limited due to Sony not allowing game assets to be added or changed or something.  If you have a choice, play on PC first, then XB1 and PS4 if its your only option.

Also, the list of mods so far of both PS4 and XB1 mods is really thin.  If you are intent on playing with mods (and you should be) I'd wait a few more days for the list to populate a bit more.

In terms of what modding can do and what mods to look for, there's the already mentioned SkyUI (PC Users) and Alternate Start which are must haves for me.  There have been a couple of really good skill and perk system overhauls such as Perkus Maximus and SPERG.  These focus on adding more importance to the perk system and making your choices really matter a lot more than they do in vanilla.  There are mods such as Archery Gameplay Overhaul that change the Archery system to make it more realistic (And more difficult), and there's a similar one which changes the stealth system to be more difficult as well.  Thunderchild is another interesting one that changes the Shout system and supposedly makes a 100% shout based character build viable.

Some must-have quality of life mods to get are A Quality World Map which makes the map prettier including adding roads, Run for Your Lives which makes NPCs run when a dragon attacks so you dont end up with wiped out villages and towns, and things like Faster Horse Dismounting or Faster Standing up mods.

There are Survival mods which really ramp up the difficulty and realism such as Frostfall which adds a hypothermia mechanic to the game and completely changes how you think about going from point a to point b.  A bit too hardcore for my tastes but it's quality stuff for a completely new experience.

There are a plethora of custom house mods, the best IMO called Legacy of the Dragonborn, which doubles as both a player home and Dragonborn museum where all of the quest loot/weapons/rare books you discover while playing gets put on display in a museum and random NPCs come visit it.  It's cool seeing it populate and get bigger the more stuff you complete and find.

There have been mods that greatly increase the amount of weapons and armor in the game without making anything overpowered.  MorrowlootImmersive Armors, and Immersive Weapons are the gold standard here.

Finally, there are DLC sized quest mods.  The good ones will add multiple hours to your game, add new lands, weapons, stories, etc.  These are epic and will probably take the longest to port over to SE and you wont see any of these on the PS4 for sure.  The best of these include Moonpath to Elsweyr, The Wheels of Lull, and Falskaar.  There are also ones that are follower based like Inigo and Vilja, both of which add incredibly detailed followers complete with their own quests/personalities.  Just be careful with follower mods as many mod authors live out their waifu fantasies with some incredibly weird ones.

This is just scraping the surface but I'm probably going to hold off of playing until most of these get converted.

I don't know if these are available for console, but here are some I like:

SKSE - required for many mods

SkyUI - already mentioned, better interface.

UFO - Unlimited Followers Overhaul - one of the must-have mods. Gives more options for controlling your followers. Also increases the number of followers IIRC. I seldom dismiss any, I just leave them all waiting at a house and pick the ones I want to take on a given trip.

Categorized Favorites Menu - In addition to your 8 gamepad quick sets, you can set up entire sets of armor and/or weapons, and anything favorited will show up in an extra menu for quicker selection. Probably the most used favorites menu.

Glowing Ore Veins - makes ore veins have streaks of colored mineral running through them so they are easily identified compared to normal rocks.

Lockpick Pro - tired of having done the lockpick game 5000 times yet?  If so, this shows you where the spot is that unlocks it so you can just unlock it and move on. There are also mods I think that skip the mini-game entirely though I tried this first and stuck with it.

A Quality World Map and Solstheim Map - With Roads - better map, and shows every road and trail, not just the major ones

Ragged Flagon Secret Entrance - Puts an exit/entrance to the Ragged Flagon right at the Riften front gate, so you don't have to wait for the sliding door animation into the Thieve's Guild

Sometimes Pick Up Books - gives you an in game config that you can use to choose whether clicking a book reads it or picks it up. Requires SkyUI I think.

Instant Mining - tired of watching the 300th animation of your character mining? this lets you click and move on immediately just like when you gather ingredients.

Valdacil's Item Sorting - renames items so they are grouped together better in inventory.

Enhanced Character Edit - better set of menus for your character's appearance, with increased options.

So played all the fallouts but :bag:  to admit I never played any of these. Think I bought a heavily discounted version or a free games with gold download of Skyrim on 360 and never had time to play it. Any pro-tips on what to do if I buy the SE?

Say goodbye to family and friends for the next few months?

Sorry if it's been mentioned, but is there a list of the mods that will be available for PS4 (with the description)?  I understand the list is going to be limited compared to XB1, but IMO it's more about the quality of the mods available than the quantity since many of the mods I have read about don't really interest me.  I am really leaning towards getting the PS4 because it has by far the best baseball game available while XB1 has nothing good for baseball.  However, other factors for me include when/if Gran Tourismo ever comes out (Forza is a very appealing game, but GT would balance that out) and the difference in quality between the consoles for Skyrim, which is probably my favorite game of all time.

Don't expect much in terms of mods for the PS4.  From the reddit:

Mods on PS4 can only be in the form of an an esp file. No assets whatsoever (even scripts which don't have any problem with the file format). Assets include scripts, textures, meshes, and sound files.

So. Mods that add new types, or drastically alter existing gameplay? No deal. Those require scripts. Quest mods? No go, those require scripts (except for the absolutely simplest of mods, like "go fetch this sword." Anything cool requires scripts for various stages). New characters? No go. Creating a character in the game generates facegen data which consists of a nif and texture file. While it is possible to put a character into the game without including these files, their face will just be completely black. No new weapons or armor. No retextures or graphics mods.

Here's the closest thing to a list of potential PS4 mods.

Thanks!  This is disappointing since it seems like the only mods that will be available are the ones I don't care about.  It's going to be tough for me to decide between baseball and a more meh version of Skyrim and no Forza vs. no baseball but better Skyrim and better racing games available.  I was hoping Sony would make the choice easy but that was wishful thinking.

Join the PC Master Race!

I might have to do that.
Keep in mind the Xbox is limited in many ways too in terms of mod support.  You can only have 5 gb of mods installed which is not a lot, they also do not allow any mod that uses external code which is also limiting.  SKSE mods, which account for a large number of popular mods for example, cant be used on Xbox or PS4.  So when deciding between a PS$ and Xbox, dont assume xBox will have the full mod support the PC has.

Need to read up on the mods but before I do:

can you add them at any time or do you need to start a whole new game if you add one?
Depends on the mod, but I think most should be ok installing whenever outside of the big overhaul mods.  The bigger issue is trying to remove a mod on an existing save.

On Xbox just downloaded these to start:

alt start

unofficial patch

open cities

relationship dialogue overhaul

rich merchants (this feels like a cheat though)

arc Metallica crafting

Female body replaced

Forgotten  city

Where can I find descriptions of these?  Some look interesting.

Fwiw deleting the unofficial patch and the forgotten city solved the issue. Bet it was the patch.
I'd have guessed Open Cities and something else combining to be the problem.

You really do want the Unofficial Patch. It fixes most of those bugs that Bethesda never took the time to fix.

ETA:  To expand on that, Open Cities was originally very buggy and caused a lot of crashes. Though they worked those out mostly over time, the new version could be back to having issues. And it frequently conflicts with mods that make changes to cities. I've not used it for those reasons though I like the concept.

When removing a mod that you've had active in your past saved games: After you remove it and load your save, it'll tell you some objects in the save may no longer exist which is fine, the mod that had the info on them is gone. But after the game loads, make a fresh save so those dangling references will not be saved to it, quit out to menu, and load the fresh save back again.

Also, if you find two mods conflict, sometimes all you need to do is change the order of which one loads first and which loads after. Though sometimes they are just plain incompatible if both changed the same thing and both require their change to work right.

I agree the unofficial patch is more important.
