Genrepalooza 3: Playlists are done, phwew (1 Viewer)

3.xx

Genre - Punk

Song - Modern Kicks

Band - Exploding Hearts

Before a tragic van accident took three of the members' lives on their way back from a show, Exploding Hearts were probably the band with the potential to be one of the biggest true pop-punk/glam/trash bands on the planet. With a knack for songwriting and hooks, along with a critical eye and ear way beyond their years, their brief time was marked by greatness like this. Glad to be leading off the punk element of the mix with them. They deserve it. R.I.P.

eta* Pitchfork commemorates the Hearts and reviews their two albums, Guitar Romantic and Shattered, here and here, respectively.
  Picked them in a handful of other drafts, and while I wanted to avoid it this time around, Guitar Romantic is just such an amazing rush. Freakin' perfect.

I guess since it's Saturday, I can make my third round pick.

Round 3  -  Pretty Vegas -  INXS  (Rock)

At least I won't get banned for the dead person.
I had no idea they put out any new music. One of the first live bands I saw. Nice.

I suppose this would have qualified for either genre this round.

The individual it could be said leads this band was going to be my first choice for rock from another.
I was just thinking that there is probably a way that one of his projects could be drafted into every genre in this draft.

Yeah, I've seen them picked before, but didn't know if it was you or Bonzai, actually. I think Bonzai always semi-snipes me on the New Bomb Turks and you on Exploding Hearts. Anyway, I love Guitar Romantic. It's one of those few records that manages to be both joyously jangly and sloppy, yet tight and focused. They're definitely in the great glam/trash/punk tradition that sees, culturally for some reason, that the New York Dolls and Hanoi Rocks are loved by punks rather than metalheads.

I own Shattered on vinyl, which I mistakenly purchased instead of Guitar Romantic because the vinyl version of Shattered doesn't include some of the songs on the CD like "Sniffin' Glue" and others, which was the reason I picked it over Guitar Romantic. But that's just a complaint about Dirtnap's inclusion of the songs (I mean, there's room on the record, fellas. But I feel dirty even daring to complain about Dirtnap. What a label!). Regardless, what a great band the Exploding Hearts were in their sadly meteoric time.

3.xx Chastity Belt, Different Now (Rock, 2017)

Was listen to this with headphones one day and it just hit me like a ton of bricks. So simple and beautiful. (Nice "Hunger Strike" cover video too.)

And you try and you try and you try and you try

Cool song -- very dreamy -- and cool nod to Temple Of The Dog, though Temple was a little more revolutionary in their gender-twisting long johns and shorts (functioning as male leggings), which was a style I unfortunately adopted in '92-93, my freshman year in college.

Jorts or cut-off bermudas with thermal underwear or plaid pajamas to go with some long, infrequently washed hair. Oof. I quickly ditched that style, but remember it fondly. Loving some Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament and Eddie Vedder retrospective.

Round 3

3.xx  -  One Hundred Days -  Mark Lanegan  (Rock)

Bonus live track that is really my favorite - but not my draft choice -> Mark Lanegan - One Hundred Days @ Bakehouse Studios, Richmond (10th July 2010) - only for those who really like the original - this is more emotional, but of lower quality.

This could be Rock or Old Fart - as Lanegan fronted the Screaming Trees in the 80's and 90's. I would appreciate feedback, if one category fits better than the other. It's not super heavy, so Old Fart might be better. Edit: settled on Rock as genre.

Anyways - I'm sticking to my theme of being lost (Rd 1 - Crazy) - gettin help from friends in redemption (Rd 2 - Hold Your Head High) - and now, this is about waiting for your ship to come in.

Most I know, consider this to be a sad song. I do not. To me it is about hope for the future and the where-with-all to hold out for it. It's one of my all time favs, that I go to often when I need to remind myself that things will work out. Also, as my theme is so story driven, I will once again include the lyrics - as they really make the point that I am going for:

When the willow bends towards the end of day
And twilight falls again
To the funny sound that a blackbird makes
Twilight falls again
As no good reason remains, I'll do the same
Thinking of you
One day a ship comes in, one day a ship comes in
But I can't say how or when
But I know somewhere the ship comes in every day

There is no morphine, I'm only sleeping
There is no crime to dreams like this
And if you could take something with you
It would be right
Something good

From my fingertips, the cigarette throws ashes to the ground
I'd stop and talk to the girls who work this street, but I got business farther down
Like one long season of rain, I will remain
Thinking of you
One day a ship comes in
From far away a ship comes in
One hundred days you wait for it
And you know somewhere the ship comes in every day

There is no morphine, I'm only sleeping
There is no crime to dreams like this
And if you could take something with you
It would be bright
Just like something good

One day a ship comes in
One hundred days you wait for it
Something bright
Something so good
One hundred days
A ship comes in every day
You know it's good
You know it's good
A ship comes in every day
One day a ship comes in
Its good
When it's something good

is draft order irrelevant today?  Looks like everyone before me in round 3 but NV has drafted, though many out of order.
@Long Ball Larry Generally, and I can't speak for the commissioner, weekend selections aren't according to draft order; rather, you select a song for the day. I think that's what is going on here.

The year is 2009 (at least according to Spotify) and old Larry, your hero, is not in a great spot.  Working 2 jobs, small child at home, not in a great relationship, driving all the time.  New music was not much of an interest, though he valiantly continued listening to the music of his younger days.  He tried to listen as much Mike and the Mad Dog as possible, as well as every single minute of the Howard Stern Show (which then was like 25 hours per week).  Stern's move to Sirius of course caused Larry to subscribe to the fledgling network, though outside of Lithium and Backspin, he hadn't much interest in the music.  But then one day, he decides to flip around the dial and lands on Spectrum (our unreliable narrator thinks) and much like Howard Stern Comes Again, so too did our good friends Polvo with

3.10 - Beggar's Bowl (Rock)

Dormant since 1997, Polvo burst back on the scene with the album In Prism, rekindling their jangly "real" indie style with a more refined sonic power and giving our hero hope that perhaps there were still new creative forces in the universe worth absorbing...

Holy ####, Polvo was a thing again this century? BRB, heading to immediately check out.

Wow, had no idea the Monkees were still #intheleague. This is really good.
Sadly Peter Tork has passed since then and Davy Jones died a few years before this album even came out though they did have some recordings from him they included in the album.

Sadly Peter Tork has passed...
Not ta be an ###, but...this does kinda put a demon of mine to bed.

When I was younger - b4 the beard - when I had a full head of hair, everyone told me I looked like Tork.

I never really shined to that.

Maybe that why I grew the beard and pulled my hair out.

Now - I can finally rest in peace - along with Pete.

THnx.

Their recent records featured songs written by a number of pop luminaries including Rivers Cuomo, Andy Partridge, Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller.  The song Ilov80s drafted was penned by Death Cab's Ben Gibbard.

Rd 3 The Monkees- Me and Magdalena (fart)

One of the more surprising releases in recent memory. I’m not a big fan of their 60s catalogue but their recent album was pretty good and this song is gorgeous.
Holy Crap!  I was (and still am) an original fan, and I had no idea this album even existed.  Thanks!

Wikipedia says that the song was written by Ben Gibbard, of Death Cab For Cutie fame.

Going with old farts category.  So many songs to choose from since they put out a couple of my favorite albums of the 00s back to back.  For this draft I will just throw a dart and go with..

Round 3

Category:  Old Farts

SongDinosaur Jr. - Ocean in the Way

Getting caught up now that my headache has finally dissipated, my day has been basically this so far.  :coffee: :toilet:

Anyway, looks like I took my favourite dream pop song and my very favourite song of the last few years in Genrepalooza 2, so I can't very well go that route again...

Are you sure this is a music thing?  Some article from 2011 says he is the poster child for Bitter Beer Face.

So what brought this on?
yeah, big whoops post.  😀  I was looking for the golf thread ...saw Tiger Woods in the header and posted.

Sabbatini and his sour#### face is near the lead in this weekend's tourney at Hilton Head and I'm watching.

Apologies.  I'll find the right thread.
