Genre - R&B

Cold Little Heart - Michael Kiwanuka

This kind of straddles the line between R&B and Rock but his soulful delivery pushes it into what would have been considered soul/R&B in the past. He's a pretty diverse and impressive artist nevertheless.

I came across this accidentally around its release date, in '09. I have absolutely no clue as to how "mainstream" it is. It has been on my favorites playlist since then. The lyrics, while not as powerful to me as some of my earlier picks, are still strong imo.

I think this is pop, but I don't even know what pop is...whatever it is, it's a great club song. Night at the Roxbury heads, unite!  Nod your heads. I was going to go with another one, but she ripped off Michael Jackson WHO I DO NOT FEEL BAD FOR. Anyway, this song will suffice as being dope. I'm not sure which of her songs really does it for me -- they all do. Ms. Fenty, do your thing. 

 
One of the titans of 21st-century hip-hop, from one of its masterpiece albums. I admit to mild surprise that this was not selected in a previous Genrepalooza.

Also - I can neither confirm nor deny that this pick was influenced by the fact that my longest-running fantasy baseball team is named "99 Problems but a Pitch Ain't One". :hophead:

Before the draft, and not fully understanding the term, I tagged this as "None of the Above" because, honestly, I challenge you to classify this group. They're funk! They're dance! They're hard rock! They're dream pop! Maybe next time we need an "All of the Above" category.

Fortunately, my home category is Female, so I get to leave that question to the philosophers.

I have a 10-year-old daughter who had an Echo and an Apple Music subscription atop her Christmas list.

Round 13 - The 1975 - Chocolate  (pop)

The 1975 is one of the few current guitar bands that's had any any success crossing over to Pop.  Their personnel still follows the archetypal rock band structure of the past half century--four lads from Manchester with a cheeky pretty boy frontman.  But they've been able to reach "big stage at Coachella" level of popularity by using rock as one of many entry points into their unique sound including Pop, Dance, Ambient and House.

They've released three albums that have succeeded commercially and artistically, which is the 21st century equivalent of six albums in terms of career longevity.  Chocolate was their first worldwide hit.  It's irresistibly catchy but not quite annoying.

 
:lmao:  Way behind here, and the FBG forum being down earlier didn't help.

Was unsure about a possible pick that could be maybe classified as rap/r&b/neo-soul, so going with a more easily defined one and saving that one for later.

Much like with the AYWKUBTTOD pick, I played this over and over back when it first came out, but not so much lately. This one's super short, but what an amazing intro track. Killer production.

As someone who’s listened (read: been subjected) to pop music on a daily basis since my daughter was old enough to say the phrase “Hits 1” ... 2015 is the decade’s best year in pop like Mike Trout is the decade’s best ballplayer: it’s not close. 

There are a ton of fun, catchy tunes from that year’s chart like “Uptown Funk” that I’ll still sing along to when they pop up on our family’s playlists - many of them by artists whose other stuff is junk. And - hey, wait a minute! - it’s almost like I scripted that intro:

Love them, love this song.  Had a chance to see them in a couple of weeks, but even lawn tickets were pricey and went fast. So I'm seeing Anderson .Paak and Vampire Weekend (seperate shows) for about the same price as The 1975.

Although now I'm looking at verified resale tickets for $48, hmmmm.

Rihanna was one of my first thoughts for both R&B and pop. She has like 20 songs worthy of being picked in this draft.

Funny you should mention...That was the pick I mentioned being unsure about in terms of category, so I'll see if this works. Whole album is dope.

You know what, this song was spotlighted a bunch of times in the thread that inspired this draft and could arguably go for dance as well but I'm likely going to go even more electronic/dance there.

Also, this is the best song eligible for this draft, I think. The best post-2000 pop song for sure, the best post-2000 song likely, maybe just the best song...?
