Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (2 Viewers)

243.8 or 12 - Duke Ellington and Jimmie Blanton  - Mr. J.B. Blues (Take 2)  (1900s on 9)

Bassist Jimmie Blanton played with Duke Ellington for less than two years (1939-41) . This period is widely regarded as the peak of the Ellington Orchestra. The Blanton-Webster Band also featured Ben Webster on tenor.

Blanton died of tuberculosis at the age of 23 and Webster quit in 1943 after an altercation with Ellington. But more importantly, the strike by the American Federation of Musicians and the resulting recording ban kept Ellington out of the studio for two years during WWII. The musical landscape changed after the war and big bands were on the outs.

Cool story but in the course of typing it up I changed the pick from a big band number to a duet with the Duke and Blanton that highlights the bassist's wonderful talents.

244.8 or 12 - U.K. - In the Dead of Night  (I ❤️ Prog)

Supergroup consisting of members from Yes, King Crimson, Roxy Music and Soft Machine formed as Prog's big wave was receding in 1978. They sure picked a boring name too.

I listened to the Stones mix on my dog walk tonight (a real stretch). We did a nice job of hits with deep tracks. It was nice on a surprisingly sunny and warm day.

This song will stand out in the 1900s mix a little like it did when it first came out. It's musically more of a kind with songs recorded decades later on our Real Jazz playlist.

Bebop started happening during the musicians strike so its origins weren't recorded. When the recording ban ended in 1944, Bebop emerged as a fully formed entity.

I am going to draft some songs that also stand out. Not so much because they sound as futuristic as the Parker song but just because of the variety of musical styles the category allows for.

It's an interesting category and all the songs are shorter than a bass solo.

BONUS O Mio Babbino Caro by Puccini

Composed and performed in 1918. Shout out to A Room With a View.
Although originally performed in 1918, the opera Gianni Schicchi wasn't recorded until mid-century. I added the oldest recording I could find on Spotify to the playlist, this 1950 version with Grete Rappsardi performing the role of Lauretta.  If you can find an older one, feel free to replace it.

The things you learn in a draft.

If you think it is out of bounds for the the recording date, feel free to remove it. I was not thinking about recording date vs date the music was written and popularly performed.

I appreciate your dedication and my next pick is totally in your honor.

If a category is retiring, I haven't put a Neil song in it yet and there were other things I wanted to do with my "real" picks that day, I often use the bonus for that (if I can find something appropriate). Which is what happened here.
Gotcha.   I just skimmed through - I didn't see that it was a Neil pick.

Early recording technology is one of the main things unifying this playlist.  The old scratchy sound with drums and bass buried way down in the mix makes the songs sound like they're coming out of the distant past, which of course they are but the fidelity of a record from the 50s sounds closer to a modern recording than one dating from the 1930.

Well, RW also said he is going Prog x2, and his might get a little metal-y, but not sure.  There is one band that I am not a huge fan of that I think "needs" to be on a prog list so if he or somebody else doesn't take something I will probably bonus it up tonight.   In the meantime, let's get in some more 70s proggy goodness

I HEART PROG

243.XX:  CAMEL -  LADY FANTASY:  ENCOUNTER/SMILES FOR YOU/LADY FANTASY

Link
You know it's prog when there are lyrics like "saw you sitting on a sunbeam".
