Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (5 Viewers)

Some might say that's a good thing in this case. I know several people who like prog but think Gentle Giant is a bridge too far. I haven't heard enough of their stuff to weigh in.
Interesting.    I honestly haven't heard a ton either - just a few albums.  I don't think it's anymore out than other stuff I normally come across.

I think my main barriers with prog is usually the voices and the doosh/noodling factor.   As I have learned slowly - I guess I like prog more than I would have thought.   But to my untrained ear something like Tool shows off the skills in a way that naturally and in a way that blends throughout the song.  Then there are bands like -redacted- who seem to play as though their only purpose is show off their music school chops.  I have respect for the talent, just not my type of prog.

Which means it's time for...

ANOTHER BONUS PICK!

Are There Any More Real Cowboys? -- Neil Young ft. Willie Nelson (Willie's Roadhouse)

For whatever reason, aside from the Journey through the Past soundtrack that was released against Neil's will, Old Ways is the only Neil album that's not on Spotify. However, this duet with Willie also appears on a compilation album of Willie duets that is on Spotify.
Willie, Neil, and John have been doing Farm Aid together since 1985. Dave Matthews has been part of the "board of directors" since 2001.

Then there are bands like -redacted- who seem to play as though their only purpose is show off their music school chops.
I have this problem with some of the jambands as well. Some of them are good at using their skills to enhance their songs, others don't care about that in the slightest -- and in some cases don't really care about songs at all.

Bumping this to the new page.

Interesting.    I honestly haven't heard a ton either - just a few albums.  I don't think it's anymore out than other stuff I normally come across.
I listened to the Gentle Giant song, and it is far out, man.  Some troll poster said it has to be the crappiest song in existence, and someone replied to that saying, "It's what comes over the speakers on the Rainbow Bridge!"

♥️♥️♥️ PROG

245ish?.YM - The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson

I was surprised these guys weren’t on the Prog playlist yet.
They were, but I screwed up and forgot to add the song when Eephus picked it. The band who recorded Thela Hun Ginjeet and the band who recorded In the Court of the Crimson King had pretty much nothing in common other than a name and a guitarist, so I don't see an issue with having both.

Pip's Invitation said:
At one point we lost a day's worth of Yo Mama prog picks because Free Stylin' was rolled at the same time. Maybe we'll get more from him today.
Mrs R got a Rush song in the playlist today, so I’ll for sure save my Rush picks for Guitar Hero on Sunday.

It's way out there, even for prog. I like it fine in isolation, but I'm not sure I could handle a whole album of that.

I HEART PRAGUE

246ish?.YM - Firth of Fifth - Genesis

No Gabriel led Genesis on the playlist yet. One of my favorites.
I was gonna do Genesis with Gabriel on the next prog roll if no one had by then. And I would have taken this for Keyboard Warriors if it was available. There are of course other Tony Banks performances that would work for that one.

Oh yeah, this is much better for that playlist. Just an incredible performance.

On the fascist side, there are the recordings made by Wilhelm Furtwangler and the Berliner Philharmoniker for German radio broadcasts during WWII.

They're interesting for their historical context but also because Furtwangler is a brilliant conductor and the Berliner has always been one of the world's great orchestras.  There's a lot of controversy about Furtwangler's political beliefs and if he didn't collaborate with the Nazis, he managed to coexist with them.

Ok, now I am interested. I have to hear this thing.

Early recording technology is one of the main things unifying this playlist.  The old scratchy sound with drums and bass buried way down in the mix makes the songs sound like they're coming out of the distant past, which of course they are but the fidelity of a record from the 50s sounds closer to a modern recording than one dating from the 1930.
Fair point. Since we are grouping 50 years of music together, one of the interesting things I like is the clashing of old world and new world that is kind of happening there. It's reflective of that time period in general.

So l listened to the largely ignored Velvet Playlist while cleaning today. It’s enjoyable for what it is. Very mellow but satisfying and contains a swarth of talent that would have likely went mostly unrepresented otherwise.

Some great voices on there.

My personal 3 favorite playlists so far (ignoring individual artists that I love with dedicated stations):

Soul Town

Underground Garage

Outlaw Country

Have picks ready for Storytellers and Featuring but felt sorry for Velvet so went there for first pick.

Most likely going Storytellers later as it's by an undrafted band(I think) and considered it for the Spring mix.
