Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

WE DID IT! Finally.

Two movie theme songs today and another version of a song recorded specifically for a movie. Hmmmm.

My special shout-out goes to simey's choice of "Linger" by the Cranberries. "Zombie" seems to be the song of choice around here, but "Linger" has always been my favorite. Also, Ilov80s chose one of my two favorite Kate Bush songs.

Not a lot of new-to-me listening today, but I'm excited to hear the few I don't know.
Linger is one I noticed too. Zombie is an auto-skip for for me.

Should I be counting "War Pigs" and "War Pigs/Luke's Wall" as the same song? Doesn't matter in the long run (doesn't affect contest questions or anything like that), but just wondering for purposes of @falguy 's and my spreadsheets. When I was tabulating I put them in as if the same.
Yes - it’s just a little extra at the end.
Yes, the instrumental outro is Luke’s Wall.

Brief bit about today's selection from me "Boom, Like That," is a song essentially about the formation of and business of McDonalds. It got some radio play, but McDonalds corporate people did not approve of the negative slant about a place with Happy Meals and expressed their objection to most of the major radio groups in the country. It eventually disappeared from radio.

Yes - it’s just a little extra at the end.
More specifically: The double title "War Pigs / Luke's Wall" was from the track listing on the U.S.-released album label itself. Later U.S. editions might just have it as "War Pigs".

On the U.K. release of Paranoid - same track, same length -- it's just "War Pigs".

My top 10 from the 9 point round, excluding my own selection:
  1. Doug : Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd
  2. @Yankee23Fan : Ramble On - Led Zeppelin
  3. Scooter : Lola – The Kinks
  4. @falguy : Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
  5. @Zegras11 : Pride (In The Name Of Love) (live in Tulsa) - U2
  6. @Mt. Man : Madness – Muse
  7. @DrIanMalcolm : Hysteria - Def Leppard
  8. @jwb : Cruel Summer - Bananarama
  9. @AAABatteries : Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
  10. @Mister CIA : Rattlesnakes - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
Another awesome round!

I very strongly considered including Lloyd Cole in my top 36 (though I would have chosen a different song), but he was just edged out. Glad to see he made someone's list.
I'm curious which Lloyd Cole song you would have chosen. If you give me the initials, I'm sure I can figure it out quickly. I invested heavily in the LC catalog back in my CD days.

Also, my pick tomorrow is a reply song to Lloyd. @krista4 , how many reply songs are in this contest? ... because Shirley you are tracking this kind of thing.

I wonder what Burger King thought about The Humpty Dance.

So on Hysteria.

There are a lot of 80s power ballads, some of them very good, a lot of them very terrible. But they tended to all kind of follow the same pattern; a slow, quiet building intro with some bombastic drums and searing crazy guitar solos that just came across, well, douchy after a while. (I'm thinking probably most explicitly of "Angel" by Aerosmith and "Heaven" by Warrant, especially the latter, which is just so gawdawful.) Def has a song sorta like this with Love Bites, and there are many, many to choose from. So now that I've backed my way into this, I'll note that this song sort of backs its way into its own power, too, with that sort of subtle guitar riff intro, which leads to a somewhat midtempo ballad, a slow song, but not agonizingly so. I find it very spare in its longing, and really think it's one of their gems.

My Sweet Lord

Is that the one they sing around the campfire in the movie Glory?

Edit: Nope. I do recognize it, but not by name. I just don't really have a thing for things Beatle.
I think that was the Chiffons singing, "He's so Fine."

No, that was from Jaws, when they're all on the boat together in the evening comparing various wounds. You're thinking of "All Shook Up," by Elvis.

I loathe both those songs. Angel is ear piercing.

Known-to-me favorites from #23, not including my own selection and Cruel to Be Kind, which is known to be on my list:

Ramble On -- Led Zeppelin (Yankee23Fan)
Roundabout -- Yes (Hawks64)
Take Me Out -- Franz Ferdinand (Rockaction)
Pride (in the Name of Love) -- U2 (Zegras11)
The Concept -- Teenage Fanclub (Scorchy)
War Pigs/Luke's Wall -- Black Sabbath (Doc Oc)
The Changingman -- Paul Weller (Mrs. Eephus)
Cruel Summer -- Bananarama (jwb)
Enjoy the Silence -- Depeche Mode (AAABatteries)
There's No Way Out of Here -- David Gilmour (Shuke)
She's Not There -- The Zombies (Cosjobs)
Solsbury Hill -- Peter Gabriel (Falguy)
Linger -- The Cranberries (Simey)
Everybody Wants to Rule the World -- Tears for Fears (Ditkaburgers)

Pip’s Invitation:

Rolling In The Deep - Adele
(duplicate – second vote)

Nice. Was the first to take the grammy for song, record and video since something Michael Jackson did in the 80s. Also, shoutout to Neil Cowley, her pianoman/keyboardist back then, who's put out some stunningly great jazz over the past 20 years. This was the 2nd concert I took little chaosburgers to. She was 7 years into piano lessons and burning out, but could not take her eyes off of Neil.

simey:

Linger - The Cranberries
(new song)

I was so torn between this and Zombie that I just punted the Cranberries. I regret that a little. When I first heard Delores growl out Zahhmmbeee Zahhmmbee...dat's about the most memorable moment of the 90s, but Linger may be the better song start to finish for me. What a voice and hers is the saddest of sad stories.

timschochet:

Never Never - The Assembly
(new artist)

I think tim is 9 for 9 on new to me songs. I haven't got around to the last 2 yet but he's definitely 7 for 7 and I like them all so far.

Yankee23Fan:

Ramble On - Led Zeppelin
(new artist)

:pickle::clap::headbang:🍾🥁🎸📣🎉🥳

Haha. Emojis made me laugh. I've told my Ramble On story before. We (college roomies) were talking about the backmasking demonic message baloney and played this straight, loud, 3am, vinly, killer sound system... and the turntable died mid song. Freaked us out. Great song. Welcome aboard, Zep.

Manster:

6 Underground - Sneaker Pimps
(new artist)

SNEAKER PIMPS! I yelled that when I saw it. I had Manster all wrong. Thought he was a metal head hard rocker exclusively. Big hat tip here. They were on my list (this song too) as it evolved from too much prog to too much trip hop around Christmas. It's been a favorite on my trip hop playlist for a long time. If I ever hike that local's trail above Tahoe you shared with me, this will be the playlist.

Mrs. Rannous:

Close My Eyes Forever - Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne
(new song for both artists)

Beautiful and forgotten by me. I think I love this playlist the most so far. Can't wait to catch up. Still need to listen through yesterday's.

Eephus:

The James Bond Theme (From Dr. No) - John Barry
(new artist)

Yup, AAA. Ephin Eeph does it again. Brilliant pull. Guess where it's going? Straight to the trip hop playlist.

AAABatteries:

Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
(new song)

It was the top DM on my list. Really cannot wait to find time for this playlist.

Oliver Humanzee:

Just Like Honey – The Jesus and Mary Chain
(new song)

I said, whaaaaa tf??? OH gone chalk with JaMC? Did not see that coming. Man, I love this band. When I tried to guess simey's JaMC, this was sort of my 2nd guess. And, ftr, I got it on my 3rd try. That's not very impressive.

Same song. Packaged as a War Pigs/Luke's Wall cuz apparently American record execs wanted at least 10 songs on an album....same thing with Jack the Stripper/ Fairies wear Boots....it's all an illusion

About once or twice a year, I'll get in the mood for a Quarter Pounder w/cheese, no onions, and extra pickles. Some day I may live dangerously and get a double Quarter Pounder. As for "Boom, Like That," I don't remember hearing the song on the radio, but I know it from the Shangri-La album. I've always enjoyed his storytelling.

No Reply At All

Totally agree here, especially with Love Bites, which has some amazing harmonies. Mutt Lange could produce with the best of them.

I'm happy to go into McDonalds these days just to stick it to BK and their ear-splitting whopper, whopper campaign. Which is probably exactly the opposite of what BK was going for.

There's a fairly big artist that hasn't been picked yet that kind of surprises me. I'm sure there's others but one that I have in my top-15 that has zero votes so far.

ETA - I will say their catalogue isn't very deep so that could explain it some.

Curious about this act. I thought I had one like this, but there's been one pick of the act so far.

Pickles = never
Peppers = never
Mustard = only on soft pretzels

currently eating a hot, thinly sliced asiago/pepper pork tenderloin and swiss on a small toasted sub bun ...with sliced tomatoes, dressed shredded lettuce - AND pickled jalapenos, mayo AND dijon mustard

delicious

ETA: not a big pickle fan though - occasionally I'll eat a nice dill slice on the side with a good sandwich but gotta have chips with it
