Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (7 Viewers)

New Binky the Doormat:

Church Of The Poison Mind - Culture Club
(new artist)

The first time I heard this it made me realize that Culture Club was more than silly pop. (In retrospect they aren't really silly pop.)
Manster:

All And Everyone - PJ Harvey
(new song)

Appropriate that we get a song from her most Brit-centric album Let England Shake, where she obsesses over English/British history and sings with a much more pronounced English accent than she had before.

higgins:

Emotional Rescue - The Rolling Stones
(new song)

They did ALL the cocaine before recording this.
rockaction:

Let Down – Radiohead
(new song)

The saddest Radiohead song, and one I listened to frequently in my Lost Years.
zamboni:

Epitaph - King Crimson
(new artist)

This was the last artist remaining on my list that hadn't shown up yet.

cosjobs:

He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother – The Hollies
(new song)

I know that people dig that kind of thing, but I find this too bombastic. Same with the Neil Diamond version.

Secretly hoping there's a big reveal that The Kinks win this contest.

I know, I know, go read post 3.
I put down Waterloo Sunset as highest scoring song in the contest, but not looking good for that so far. At least it showed up today and has at least one vote.
I'll eat a booger if Waterloo Sunset does not get at least three more votes.

They just have so many good songs - you will probably not have to eat that booger (unless you just want to) but it wouldn’t surprise me given their catalog. And I’m hoping they are 4th.
Projection?

Hey, it was your idea

Speaking of mondegreens. One hot summer day I heard a few little girls in my backyard singing, comma comma comma comma comma chameleon. So I got up and told them it was karma. "Nuh uh. Our teacher played it and sang that part." Well said I, your teacher is wrong. I searched it on youtube and showed them the title. Then I played it and to their great pleasure sang every word. :bag:

scorchy:

Daddy's Gone – Glasvegas
In late 2007, NME named Daddy's Gone as a track of the month, describing Glasvegas as equal parts Jesus and Mary Chain, the Velvet Underground, and Elvis. So basically catnip for my ears. I had never illegally downloaded music before, but I couldn't find any of their songs from a legit source, so I installed Limewire and hoped for the best. It was love at first listen. Eventually, I gave in and DLed the entire album, and I still think it's legit great. I'm not the only one - Robert Christgau called Glasvegas' music "Too good to be true."

I've only gotten to see them once - on their first US tour at a crappy college bar in West Chester, PA. @plinko even made the trip up for it and at least pretended to be impressed.
I have a different song of theirs that’s in my big playlist. Was wondering if they would show up here.

Agree - much better band than they were given credit for. Lots of great hooks, including this one. The backup singer here (Helen Terry) had some pipes - a shame she pretty much faded into obscurity.

MAC_32:

Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons
(new song)

timschochet:

In The Light - Led Zeppelin
(new song)

DrIanMalcolm:

Nowhere Man - The Beatles
(new song)

Dr. Octopus:

Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
(new song)

Westerberg:

Into The Mystic - Van Morrison
(new song)

Top 5 from this round - special shout-out to Into the Mystic - one of my very favorite whiskey drinking songs.

Realized we had a John Wetton run this round with King Crimson and Asia. I don’t think even his parents would have picked his material twice.
Well sort of -- he wasn't in KC yet for Epitaph.

He also did a stint in Roxy Music but didn't play on Mother of Pearl.
True - that was Greg Lake, but in the neighborhood. Also a big fan of Lark’s Tongue in Aspic.

OK then would you believe two-thirds of ELP was picked today?

You know, I feel I’m doing Into the Mystic a disservice calling it a whiskey song. It gorgeous. It poetry and possibly VM’s greatest song. It makes you contemplate life and love. It’s a perfect song.
Maybe I am drunk and need to be corrected but I think Van said he's actually not sure if the song is called "Into the Mystic" or "Into the Misty". As he famously has said, he doesn't write his songs, he is just an antennae transcribing the music. He has several songs and lyrics that are often confused and he admits he always sure about it himself.
And yet it’s not the VM song I selected.
He's got a few good songs I would say

It's almost the perfect the song. Good for Sunday morning drinking coffee and making breakfast. Good for drinking beers around a fire a night. Good for speeding down the highway in the summer with the windows down.

Chalky McChalkerson is right! I knew about 2/3rds of the songs quickly today. A record so far, but with a lot of the Big 3 (and other familiar bands) ahead, one made to be broken. Meanwhile, let me take some other music out for a spin!

Good for something else if you know what I mean

Explain it to me.

My Morrisey pick today (by way of The Smiths) gives me Van Morrison vibes. Now certainly Morrisey is darker and more emo but the way he phrases and repeats lines in I Know It's Over, almost like he an incantation, it's pure Van Morrison.

There's a good amount of new to me today and I'm hopelessly behind and couldn't listen, but these are some known to me favorites from this round.

Church Of The Poison Mind - Culture Club
Emotional Rescue - The Rolling Stones
Into The Mystic - Van Morrison
Save A Prayer - Duran Duran
Creep – Radiohead
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction – The Rolling Stones
Tempted – Squeeze

My own pick of Heart Of The Sunrise – Yes... this might be one my last "new song" picks - lots of my remaining has been picked, and I expect others to. But I figured not too many would pick this. It's really what YES is all about - very prog rock, that distinctive Chris Squire bass, ten minutes plus, countless different sections, etc. Seeing them play this live was great.

Hopefully I'll be able to listen more tomorrow - I've liked a lot of new to me stuff in this draft.

I think 6 of my top 20 are already picked. Looking at them now, I expect at least 8 of my remaining top 20 are not on anyone else's list.

Four of your top 20 are not on anyone else's list.

Now that I've spoiled that for Just Win Baby  , does anyone want to know the answers to these? I don't think they're spoilers at all since you don't know which are and which aren't, and when they might come up, but I'm happy to look at them and give info if anyone would like it.
I'm curious how many of my top 10 or 20 are KP only picks.
Eight of top 20, mostly in the lower reaches.
By this you mean closer to #20 than #1, right?
Yes Binky

Such a great song.

I'm late to today, so I was being a bit flip with that simple comment. I'd looked up the song on both WIki and Reddit and found out that they were going for a Spector Wall of Sound and played the guitar in a different time signature than the rest of the song. Whatever the case, it's a beautiful melancholia or depression. I almost find it uplifting towards the heavens, which is odd given its subject matter.

Historic
A few favorites from Round 22 with no repeats, and Dr. O's foursome isn't included...

Don't Ask Me Questions - Like his style.
Games Without Frontiers - I still hear Jeux sans frontières as "she's so popular." My favorite solo Peter Gabriel tune.
Both Travis songs are great. I forget about them, and they are so good. The lead singers voice is easy on the ears.
I like all of the Rolling Stones songs with Ruby Tuesday being my favorite of the bunch.
I like both of the ELO songs. I don't hear them often, so it's always a good flash back of listening to the radio in the 70s, and the time in general.
Help! - The Fab 4!
The Ghost in You - I played Mirror Moves a lot in the mid-80s, and this song is my favorite.
If You're Feeling Sinister - One of my favorite albums by B&S.
Lips Like Sugar - This was in my 5 and out.
Here's Where the Story Ends - Always nice to hear The Sundays.
Where Do the Children Play? - I knew this was a zam pick right away.
Lloyd, I'm ready to be Heartbroken - Reminds me of the Hoof.
Roll & Roll Queen - 🎸
Song 2 - Never knew the name of this song until now.
Photograph - high school
Shapes of Things - old school
Brown Eyed Girl - not cool (as in Van himself)
Boys Don't Cry and Alcohol and Cigarettes

I've always liked the chorus in Father Figure. I like something about all of the songs today.

New favorites

Daisy
Slowdrive
Yeah, so did I ..... .. until I read this post. :bag: :mindblown: I didn't know those were the lyrics.
Whatever she is saying, it's not "Jeux sans frontieres". Even Texans with horrible French accents say it better than that. And I knew what she was supposed to be saying.

Mt. Man: Only Time Will Tell – Asia
I remembered the song about a minute into it. Their albums are probably better because there's a lot of talent in the band but it's kind of a shame what Prog superstars had to do to stay relevent in the 80s.
Ouchie.

I think I have a lot of Van Morrison blind spots and this exercise may open them up, but until that happens there is only one song in my library. That one song also happens to be on at least a half dozen playlists. Like you said, it's beautiful and versatile. Now that we're talking about it my leaving this one off was a mistake.

I think melancholy and sad songs can be soothing and comforting, because they move us/make us feel, and in a way can be emotionally supportive. They can be a release, which gives us pleasure. I hope that makes sense.
