Daddy's Gone – Glasvegas

In late 2007, NME named Daddy's Gone as a track of the month, describing Glasvegas as equal parts Jesus and Mary Chain, the Velvet Underground, and Elvis. So basically catnip for my ears. I had never illegally downloaded music before, but I couldn't find any of their songs from a legit source, so I installed Limewire and hoped for the best. It was love at first listen. Eventually, I gave in and DLed the entire album, and I still think it's legit great. I'm not the only one - Robert Christgau called Glasvegas' music "Too good to be true."

I've only gotten to see them once - on their first US tour at a crappy college bar in West Chester, PA. @plinko even made the trip up for it and at least pretended to be impressed.

I have a different song of theirs that’s in my big playlist. Was wondering if they would show up here.

Maybe I am drunk and need to be corrected but I think Van said he's actually not sure if the song is called "Into the Mystic" or "Into the Misty". As he famously has said, he doesn't write his songs, he is just an antennae transcribing the music. He has several songs and lyrics that are often confused and he admits he always sure about it himself.

And yet it’s not the VM song I selected.

I'd looked up the song on both WIki and Reddit and found out that they were going for a Spector Wall of Sound and played the guitar in a different time signature than the rest of the song. Whatever the case, it's a beautiful melancholia or depression. I almost find it uplifting towards the heavens, which is odd given its subject matter.

I think melancholy and sad songs can be soothing and comforting, because they move us/make us feel, and in a way can be emotionally supportive. They can be a release, which gives us pleasure. I hope that makes sense.
