Welcome New Order to the countdown!

Last night's teasers:

Two Deja Votes tomorrow! Both are songs we've already seen, though. Valerie, A Whiter Shade of Pale

In addition, one of our Big 3 has a triple-up, and one has a double-up, but the third artist is completely shut out tomorrow. Maybe they won't make the top three! Double-up: The Beatles; Triple-up: Led Zeppelin

We have three other double-ups, including a battle between me and a poster who probably wouldn't expect to double-up with me. T. Rex, The Verve (surprise double-up between KP and me), The Cure

Riddle: Take one of our double-up artists, with a name consisting of two words, and replace one letter of the second word to get a song that is one of tomorrow's selections. The Cure--> The Core by Eric Clapton

Two songs tomorrow will come from solo artists better known for being in non-Big-3 bands, one of which was not eligible for this draft. Andy Summers, Pete Townshend

There's a song title hidden in this post as well. The Riddle by Nik Kershaw

And if it's Sunday, that must mean we'll have more Dusty and Verve. Two NEW Verve songs, though!

Also we have a poster taking a song with the same title as a song they previously selected! KP – “Slide Away” by Oasis and by The Verve

Well, you guys have done it. I'm listening to Paul's solo stuff this morning. McCartney II is currently spinning. I think I'll move on to Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. I liked "Jenny Wren" a bunch in the write-up Hyden did. Maybe it'll be like that.

Were you around in my post-Beatles Beatles countdown? For some reason it seems like you didn't participate in that one much, if at all. Anyway, "Jenny Wren" is in my top 10 of Paul post-Beatles songs. I'm not sure which slot since I don't read my posts, but somewhere in the 7-10 range.

Steve Hyden ranks every McCartney studio album , excluding live records and that Oratorio thing he did. He also blasts Jann Wenner several times, which is always a plus in my book.

Eephus sent me this about a week ago, and even though I strenuously object to his rankings, I thought it was well done. He's a great writer and somehow employs his armchair psychology in a fashion that's illuminating rather than irritating. Any list that doesn't have Press to Play at the bottom is immediately suspect, though, and when I got to Flaming Pie at #18 I knew we weren't going to agree on much. He omitted the Fireman records, too.

I like his first the best

"I Feel Free" - Cream

Neither a Cream nor Clapton aficionado, I picked this because of the utter swinging nature of the lyrical stylings at the beginning. It's sort of a hoary, moany vocal, and I dig it. The problem with the song and why it might not be ranked higher by me? Eephus and I both mentioned it last time. The mix is terrible. This song would absolutely shred if Cream had a competent engineer at the helm of it all. As it is, its uniqueness puts it in my top thirty-one.

Were you around in my post-Beatles Beatles countdown?

I think I sat that out for the most part. I remember posting something that I didn't have it in me to listen to that many Beatles solo songs and figured I'd let the thread move at its own pace instead of clunking it up with drivel.

"Jenny Wren" is a really good song. I'm disappointed the rest of the album doesn't hit that sort of apex.

I suppose Ram and Wings are really the places to begin. Sounded like Hyden appreciated McCartney through maybe too much of a modernist view? /upspeak

Saturday gigs

Mrs. Eephus: One In Ten - UB40
UB40 is best known as a covers act but they started their career with some politically charged original compositions. This song is about the unemployed in Birmingham who'd been left behind by Thatcher's Britain. Ali Campbell's faux patois sometimes borders on cultural appropriation but that's not an issue on this song. He has one of those voices that can make Mrs. Eephus cry.

@ditkaburgers: Don't Start Now - Dua Lipa
I've barely seen her this weekend so I didn't get a chance to get her input about this selection. But dang, it's a banger--one of my favorites of the newer songs in her 31 song playlist. The slapping bassline and splashes of strings remind me a bit of Chic and the drop is sweet.

Eephus: Fox On The Run – Sweet
I'm happy to see Sweet getting so much love early in the countdown. I doubt creating sometime timeless was the original intent of the band, Chapman and Chinn but their songs still sound fresh a half century later.
Dua Lipa used to get criticized for her lack of stage presence, but then she came out with this in 2019 and it changed the way she performed. I still think about this routine every now and then. I love the visuals and the choreography is fun and easy to pick up.

I'm a big fan of "Riding to Vanity Fair" from that album, and "Too Much Rain" is good as well. That's about it for me. I suggest adding Flaming Pie near the top of your list and maybe Flowers in the Dirt, too. The latter is enhanced if you're an Elvis Costello fan, which I can't remember if you are. Oh, and McCartney, as cos suggested. And for something different, check out the third album from The Fireman, Electric Arguments.

worrierking:

Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll - Ian Dury
(new artist)

I hope you'll allow me a moment to cheerlead for my pick today. Ian Dury is the most unlikely pop star in history. He contracted polio in the late 40s as a child and was badly handicapped for the rest of his life. One arm was withered and essentially useless and one leg barely functioned; he wore a brace on it that he detested. He wore bell-bottomed pants long after they were stylish to cover up the brace.

He could not sing a note, he was barely five feet tall and his head, which was the size of a normal human noggin', was way too large for his withered body.

Somehow, he managed 6-8 songs to reach the British charts, although he never made it in the US.

He is, without a question in my mind, rock and roll's most accomplished pottymouth. His lyrics are stuffed with ribaldities, many of which are only decipherable by those familiar with lower class British jargon.

Here a couple of my favorite examples of his wordsmithing:

Had a love affair with Nina
in the back of my Cortina.
A seasoned-up hyena
could not have been more obscener

and:

Einstein can't be classed as witless
He claimed atoms were the littlest
When he did a bit of splitness
frightened everybody ####less.

Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is reputed to be the first entry of that now legendary phrase in pop culture. It's a fun song as are most of his. Enjoy.

Good one @timschochet ! IIRC it was this one and Athena that really caused a schism in The Who. The guys believed Pete was withholding the best songs from the band for use solo. They probably weren't wrong.

I'm finally 100% down with a @Yankee23Fan choice! :hifive:

Bang A Gong is just silky smooth.

The Fixx are a relatively underrated band.

Andy Dufresne:

Highway Star - Deep Purple
Hey @Andy Dufresne here's a "like" for ya.

Is there such a thing as Thrash-Prog? There is now.

It's probably their best song, and I'm a fan of a lot of the Purples' '70s stuff. This one has a motor.
I'm not really a fan of any of their over stuff - but when you get not just one but TWO guitar solos...

I really love the live Chickenfoot version.
No offense, but that's un-good.

Gonna have to disagree. Steve Vai rules.

My top 10 from the 14 point round, excluding my own selection:
  1. @Hawks64 : Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd
  2. @Mister CIA : What Is And What Should Never Be - Led Zeppelin
  3. @landrys hat : Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
  4. @cosjobs : Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
  5. @falguy : She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult

  8. @jwb : Enjoy The Silence – Depeche Mode
  9. @Sullie : Flesh For Fantasy - Billy Idol
  10. @Mt. Man : True Faith - New Order
Can you tell Led Zeppelin is one of my all time top 5 artists? 😬

Steve Vai wasn't the problem. Everything else was.

Pip’s Invitation:

Yours Is No Disgrace - Yes
(new song)

Here's what I wrote about this in my 1971 countdown (favorite songs from that year that were not on Tim and Binky's lists):

2. Yours Is No Disgrace -- Yes (from The Yes Album)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fUudna1Xuw

With Steve Howe taking over on guitar, Yes made a huge jump in quality -- and popularity -- on their third record, The Yes Album. The new lineup spent months writing and rehearsing in mid-1970, and the new material bore many fruits from those efforts. Most impressive was the nearly 10-minute opener, which not only contains some extraordinary and fluid guitar work from Howe and some of Chris Squire's most melodic bass playing, but also, in contrast to how the band is stereotyped, took on current events in the lyrics. This is an antiwar anthem, and a powerful one, telling the soldiers that they had no choice but to fight and they weren't to blame for the situation.

The structure of the song is far more complex than what the band had attempted on its first two albums, and consisted of several sections that were developed separately in rehearsals and then stitched together -- but the flow and consistency of the song doesn't make that obvious. It heralded a very high level of composition and performance that the band would achieve in the next 2 years, which remains unmatched by most artists, and which would make them one of the top acts of the decade, even when some of their post-1972 albums fell flat.

I saw Yes in 1987 and 1991 and this was performed both times. At the 1991 show, which featured an 8-piece version of the band (Squire, singer Jon Anderson, guitarists Howe and Trevor Rabin, keyboardists Rick Wakeman and Tony Kaye, and drummers Bill Bruford and Alan White), they opened with a spectacular 20-minute version of this.

My special shout-out today goes to @Yankee23Fan for Elton John's "Your Song," which is pretty much a perfect song. Hey! Two Elton shout-outs in a row! This is probably my favorite Elton song, and it was my choice in an early version of my list, but I switched to another for sentimental reasons.
Yeah this is the song every piano player should be asked to play instead of Piano Man, and I love Billy Joel.

A lot of people have complained about being burned out on some classic rock songs since they were played to death. I’m starting to feel that way about Bitter Sweet Symphony now. Damn I just cringed a bit when I heard those opening strings this time through the playlist, and I used to like the song 😀.
Sweet, what does mine say.

Edit: "Dude, what does mine say?" would have been the thinking man's reply.

Living On A Thin Line - The Kinks
(duplicate – second vote)

Another song which, while I love it, I wasn't expecting to get more than one vote, given how many outstanding Kinks songs there are, and how most Kinks fanatics prefer their '60s and '70s stuff to their later stuff. This has gotta be Dave Davies' most famous composition, yes?

timschochet:

Let My Love Open The Door - Pete Townshend
(new artist)

And this is one of the reasons why Daltrey, Entwhistle and Jones accused Townshend of saving his best songs for his solo albums. Maybe this doesn't "sound like" The Who, but neither does any of It's Hard aside from its one outstanding song (which is not Athena). Empty Glass was Townshend's greatest post-Quadrophenia accomplishment.

Dr. Octopus:

Showdown - Electric Light Orchestra
(duplicate – second vote)
Yay! It's not played as often as their biggest mid- and late-70s hits, so I wasn't sure if anyone else was gonna be with me on this one.

KarmaPolice:

Slide Away - The Verve
(new song)

Clever. I'll have some song-title shtick of my own later.

Manster:

High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night) - Def Leppard
(new song)

Tween me loved this. I still think it might be their best song.

Mister CIA:

What Is And What Should Never Be - Led Zeppelin
(new song)

I had this at #17 in Anarchy's Zep countdown. My friend had it at #23. I listened to that Leaf Hound album in its entirety and one of the other tracks borrows liberally from this.
simsarge:

The Core - Eric Clapton
(new artist)

Arguably Clapton's best post-1970 guitar work can be found on this track. Great performance by Marcy Levy as well.

landrys hat:

Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
(new song)

I ranked this #10 in the Zeppelin countdown. My friend ranked it #20.

Andy Dufresne:

Highway Star - Deep Purple
(new song)

This was almost my Purple pick instead of Child in Time. It is the musical equivalent of a "killing machine that's got everything."

higgins:

Earth And Sky - Andy Summers
(new artist)

Did solo Andy actually show up before solo Sting? Wow.
Zegras11:

Ticket To Ride - The Beatles
(new song)

I ranked this #42 in the Zegras/Krista Beatles countdown extravaganza, during which we discussed life, the universe and everything.

Mrs. Eephus:

Red Skies - The Fixx
(new artist)

I always liked The Fixx's singles but I guess I got over them quickly. One day in college in the early '90s I was working a shift at the student paper and a PR person called to ask if anyone would be interested in doing an interview with The Fixx. No one was.

cosjobs:

Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
(new song)

I did not have room for this in my top 25 Zep. My friend ranked it #13.

krista4:

Sonnet – The Verve
(new song)

They're British, of course they love their sonnets.

I’m lost.

how most Kinks fanatics prefer their '60s and '70s stuff to their later stuff
I’ve said this before, but if the Kinks were strictly an 80s band, they would have been a great band. Throw in what they did in the 70s and 60s and, oh boy.

I think their 80s stuff is far superior than what any of their contemporaries were putting out in the 80s with the exception of maybe David Bowie. The Stones, Who, McCartney, Plant/Page endeavors 80s output is hit and miss with mostly misses. Robert Plant actually has an argument to be included with Bowie and the Kinks - Jimmy Page does not.

Strangers or Death of a Clown may be more known. I don't know. I love all of their decades of music, but I decided to take Living On A Thin Line, because I was in college when the album came out, and I loved the song and the album. As I said when someone else took it, The Kinks played at my university in support of the album, and it was so much fun. It was the last song they played during their encore, and it was awesome. It was easy for it to be my chosen one.
