Yep, not a fan of this concept with this many songs. For one, it's just too many songs to get through in a 24 hour period. I've sort of given up trying. And then if someone lists one of your songs a pick or two above yours it's lost. (Until the top 5 or so). I understand the drawback of a draft, but I also miss talking about a song that has the spotlight and doesn't have to share it with 40 other songs.

The older I get, the more I realize how many things I'm wrong about. If I had posted the above anytime in the last 30 years, I'd have said "yep - there's another one".

Context and intent matters. This isn't an exercise that someone can "win". It's supposed to be fun.

I like the format. I’ve never done a music draft and don’t think I’d have much interest in that format. I just enjoy the music talk and the playlists to listen to while working.

My song today, Paper Planes, was discussed a couple of weeks ago when it first showed up in the countdown. I think I made a post about liking it then (or maybe just mentioned liking the cocktail)— don’t really care about who “owns” it or whatever.

I would never have brought this up and nobody is asking me but since it's out there, my 2 cents:

• I love the format - these 2 threads have been some of my favorite ever on the boards
• Krista has done a ridiculous amount of work - I never would have done it. I don't like you people enough
• The lists, the reveal, the playlist, the discussion is all fantastic
• If I had to complain I'd say it would be nice to maybe do a reveal every 2-3 days versus every day but that's totally unfair to Krista as she's investing so much time and isn't signing up for a 3 month commitment. For that reason it's cool. I'm not able to keep up or contribute as much but that's ok - and sometimes the Hippling posts are my favorite ones.
• Definitely 31 down to 1. If you did 1 up to 31 I'd probably stop paying attention after the top 20.

They called Clayton "randomly" in the middle of the night in Los Angeles, and she showed up to the studio "in curlers" and contributed her parts in a few takes, which Jagger remarked was "pretty amazing." Clayton performed her parts while pregnant.

Regarding my Iron Maiden pick today: It's been one of my favorites since the first time I heard it on the much anticipated Powerslave album. It's a long song that tells the story from the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem of the same name. The version linked (here again) has the lyrics which tell Maiden's version of the tale. If you have 13 minutes and don't mind some (fairly light) metal, it's a good listen/story. I particularly like the drums in this song.

Regarding my Iron Maiden pick today: It's been one of my favorites since the first time I heard it on the much anticipated Powerslave album. It's a long song that tells the story from the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem of the same name. The version linked (here again) has the lyrics which tell Maiden's version of the tale. If you have 13 minutes and don't mind some (fairly light) metal, it's a good listen/story. I particularly like the drums in this song.

I saw Krista's question, and I honestly didn't think that Rime would be taken, but glad to see it get some love.
I was going to say to @Pip's Invitation that it must we one of their longer songs, so in that sense it's got a bit going for him.

I ranked this #7 in JML's U2 countdown. It's an amazing ballad WITHOUT the string arrangement -- with it, it's one of the most gorgeous songs ever produced in the "rock" genre.

U2 is so over-rated, generally imo, but this song is so beautiful and could have made my list.

I think they are a great band, and they are a big soundtrack to my mid to late teens, twenties, and some of my thirties. It was such a great time to be listening to new and different music, and I feel lucky that they were making their way on the music scene during that time.

But on that note I just got to something called Echo & The Bunnymen (I think this is from yesterday), which prompted me to google to see if it was the same singer as Frightened Rabbit. I think there are questions around whether or not it was that night. It lends some heft to the legend of the song, but I'm not convinced that correlation equates to causation there.

My #1 Traffic rotates a bunch. The band has always been very special to me, so I wanted them represented on my list. John Barleycorn Must Die was one of the first cassettes I bought, and it's a tour de force of jazzy rock, which is not the same as jazz-rock fusion. You can't go wrong with any of its six tracks, but Empty Pages has always been a favorite for its compelling melody, Steve Winwood's keening vocal and the fantastic piano solo.

I have found it easier and easier to keep up, actually. I am not listening to all the playlists start to finish anymore. No need to listen to the repeats unless it's something I really love.

It's also why many of us are doing the after-listen posts, to highlight stuff we love or make posts about our picks. It's a different format for sure, but IMO there is a lot more actual listening to the music and playlists than there is in the typical drafts.

Nothing keeps you from discussing a song you have later on your list. I've done it with songs that I had higher, without saying it's going to be on my list. My pick tomorrow is a prime example. Say that you love a song and why, without doing the silly "wink, wink, we'll be seeing this again" stuff. The latter means that you've (1) revealed the song is on your list without (2) saying anything meaningful about it, which is the exact opposite of what should happen.

Oops. I'll edit my post, but what's wrong with saying you picked it later? I'm not sure anything is actually getting spoiled here.

Say that you love a song and why, without doing the silly "wink, wink, we'll be seeing this again" stuff. The latter means that you've (1) revealed the song is on your list without (2) saying anything meaningful about it, which is the exact opposite of what should happen.

I think people just really like to share things with others and like the feeling of give others some magic, in any form, and this form for me can be very magical. I think 7 of my top 10 have been taken already, and am actually flabbergasted about 2 of them. I'm so glad that JML did that U2 thread so that I can re-acquaint myself with some old favorites plus listen to the albums of the last 20 years or so. Today's selection, "All I Want Is You," was one of the seven songs tied for my #1 U2.

I would guess most or all of us feel that way. It's that balance of wanting to the be the one with the story of the song and the spotlight on the song mixed with being happy that other people already know and love the same thing you do.

I would be lying if I said that didn't have a small part to play with some of my song selections and placements. If I have a band I honestly can't choose a top song from 5-10 favorites, I probably leaned more taking one I thought had less of a chance at being taken by another person. It also just increases the odds that somebody not versed on that artist might be introduced to a song that they like.
