GM's thread about nothing (22 Viewers)

GM can forward the boxed set of The Wire to whomever after he is done...It just sits on my self save fpr periodic episode viewing...Would rather others get a chance to view...

Currently making my way through The West Wing boxed set...Man, this is liberal porn, but I love it

Also reminds me how bad The NEwsroom is
But....but I LIKE The Newsroom. :bag:

Just finished the first season of the Wire. I twas great. Only two episodes into the second season. If it were streaming, I would probably have to take a few days off work.
So...if I start watching this, will I also start talking like a character from a Charles Dicken's book?
You read any Dicken?
Uh...not, not really. Thought he might use a word like "TWAS" a lot. You know, like "Twas the night before Christmas". Was that him?

yesno. then again I twas great before I started to watch it.

What I'd say about The Wire is that, in season 1 especially, you have to let it build over the first 4-5 episodes. The complexity of the plot and the introduction of the ensemble cast takes time to build, but it's necessary. There are a good number of the same characters in season 2, so that investment largely carries over, plus you're already familiar with the subject matter and the law enforcement techniques generally, although it's an entirely new investigation with new targets. Again, great show. It was done, incidentally, by the group who did Generation Kill, which I also thought was superb. It's "big boy" television in that they don't spoon feed you the technical lingo or a lot of the subject matter - they just throw you in and expect you to figure it out contextually. Cool stuff.

[rant]I love Girl Scout Cookies. I'd dominate a box of Peanut Butter Patties during one commercial break if I could. And I guess this rant goes for all fund raising things. But enough with bringing your kids sign up sheet to work and/or posting that your kid is selling stuff on facebook. Today I've seen 8 different people post that "Little Suzy would love for you to buy cookies from her. Post here or message my inbox if you want any". Also in the break room in my small office of about 25 people there are 2 Girl Scout Cookie sheets, 1 for some pizza and various other frozen deliciousness and 1 for nuts and popcorn in those metal bins.My dad absolutely refused to take anything I was selling into work. If I wanted to sell anything I had to hump my ### up and down the neighborhood, call family and friends or stake out a spot in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot for an afternoon and sell myself. Luckily a few parents I know are the same way and their kid(s) will call or come over to ask if I want to buy. I buy the #### out of stuff from them.[/rant]Oh and get off my lawn!!

My daddy posts here. He said to ask if you want to buy some Girl Scout cookies.

:goodposting: I had to walk the neighborhood in the winter to try and sell wreaths and frozen pizzas when I was in scouts, and on the weekends we would stand on the street corners downtown and try to sell them. Now my nieces don't even directly call us when they are selling cookies, we have to hear about it second hand from my MIL

He says I'm not allowed to sell them to Uncle Homer, though.

I really don't mind the passive fund raise selling that goes on, be it a facebook post, or a signup in the break room, or what have you. It's a lot more reasonable then the co-workers that bring the booklets to you in person expecting you to buy something for little Johnny so he can earn enough points to win some pipe cleaners.I never bring in anything for my kids, as I'm the boss and I don't feel comfortable asking my employees to sign up to buy something from me. I mean, even if there is no pressure involved, it probably doesn't look good if 10 of your coworkers buy something and you don't from your boss. Of course, I don't feel uncomfortable letting my wife bring it in to her work to see if her co-workers want to buy anything. And yes, when I was a kid, I went door to door with this bs each year till I was in middle school or so. But, I don't feel all that comfortable sending my kids out to complete strangers houses without me going with them - so basically they never win any pipe cleaners. Oh well.

Damn kids. Parents hate them selling #### as much as you hate being bugged to buy it. Mine's walking her happy ### around the neighborhood, though.

Day 3.5 of e-cigs for me and I'm down to 8 regulars so far today - my lowest total so far. I'm able to space out my regulars more & more as I break the physical routines - I've yet to have a nicotene jones, it's all routine based and I'm picking them off one by one. For anyone who wants to tell me I'm doing it wrong, don't bother. I've tried to quit damned near every way possible over the last 35+ years. Some methods have gotten me as far as 3 years, some sucked, and all failed due to me being an idiot. THIS one feels the most natural, probably because my e-cigs look like the real thing and taste like it. So I'm steadily spacing out my regulars with an occasional hit from the e-cig (am about to one every 20 minutes now so I'm not friggin dizzy as hell).Week Two, Day Two of Uruk's Last Radiation Ride. Feeling ok, other than being a little worn out. Sunday nights ALWAYS kill me - I wake up around 12 or 1 and the wheels start turning about what's coming up that week (don't mattah what time I turn in). It usually takes me til Wednesday to get myself back together. One nuking tomorrow and another Thursday, then I get a week off.

Any resident Wine Country people here? Flying into SF (or OAK) for 4 nights in June. Looking to do 1-2 nights in Wine Country (not sure Napa or Sonoma) and the rest in SF.Mrs. TF and I aren't wine snobs by any means...both prefer white to red (if that matters)...and are basically just looking for a good experience, restaurants, scenery, etc. A hot air balloon ride would be cool too (but not necessary)If need be, I can start a thread, but I figured I'd try here first.

When the waiter took my 20 bill to pay a 14.20 bill, was I correct to respond incredulously when he asked if I needed change?

For the film geek you are, please realize that you're wasting valuable Wire Time with every dooshy French movie you spend 90 minutes on.Jebus H Christ, K4! Get your head in the game!
'Cuz you got to realize....It's all in the game...

[/Omar]
Oh. Does it matter to you that sometimes those French artsy movies show boobies or more?

There will likely be plenty of people who know more or aren't currently drunk on margaritas, but don't miss Schramsberg in Napa.I might have more when not drunk and exhausted.

Relax.

Just got out of the movie Impossible. I thought it was pretty amazing. Go see it if you want to restore your faith in humanity.

2nd interview with a firm in Seattle today...informed that there will be 2 more, with one in Portland, before they will make an offer. #####es.

What happened to the place that you talked to about six weeks(?) ago? Sounded like that wouldn't have been a good move for you but wondering if they figured out they needed to sweeten the deal.I'm continuing my semi-serious search. The job in Goshen, IN was (thankfully) offered to someone just as the recruiter tried to submit me (different recruiter so she had no idea), so that's off the table. Never heard another peep from Milwaukee job.Today I had phone interviews with companies in Stamford, CT and Phoenix. The Phoenix job is fantastic but I actually feel under-qualified for it, plus the recruiter told me they were going to look for a local candidate first. :kicksrock: Stamford one could be of interest but I'd have to know more. I also have a final (I think) screen with a company on Jan. 25 that would allow me to move back to Chicago and work mostly remotely, which would be extremely tempting. Have been trading phone calls for two days with a recruiter regarding a promising job in the NY/NJ area and also am at the beginnings of an evaluation with a company in the DC area.

This is them...they contacted me, told me their salary range was more flexible than they'd originally said, and scheduled this second interview with a guy that had authority to pay me more. Turns out I've been on their radar for a while and they claim I'm their first choice for this position. Still no money on the table, though.Firm I'd like to work with is still giving me a decent amount of steady work, but the managing partner says they can't make an offer until March.

Good luck with it all, good buddy. I'll be thinking about you up here in the cold and rain this week. :banned:
