GM's thread about nothing (19 Viewers)

All this corporate food talk makes me happy I live in a small anti-corporate college town. All our best food joints are local-only and they're fantastic, especially for being in the middle of nowhere. We have all those franchise places, but the liberal police keep them where they belong: frothing & angry at the edge of town with the Walmart. I haven't been to a franchise joint since I roadtripped to Cleveland on the Fourth of July and hit up BWW. This was surprisingly decent, despite my homegrown Anchor-bar snobbery about chicken wings. I don't know if that's because the wings are actually good, or because I downed 3 pitchers with my BIL and the waitress had nice cans. Speaking of which, Homer and others, what is it about Ohio and nothing but corporate food? Every place except downtown Cleveland looked like it'd been erected overnight by the same d-bag company whose aesthetic taste came from too much fun with the Playdo Fun Factory. It was scary.

Canadian beer > Californian wine. That's right. I said it, hosehead.
Bacon > Canadian Bacon.Guinness > Horsepiss Canadian Beer
The first is just ridiculous.I have no answer for the second. Well played, McSir.

Jimmy Johns...had the #9 with hot peppers (no tamatoes). I would absolutely eat this again. Very tasty. And that's not just the pot talking.
WTF is Jimmy Johns?
My linkSandwich joint...they have them in Michigan and now in Oregon, so I assume they are elsewhere. Maybe not Texas?

Remember when you had your first Coors Lite and you hated it? Subway = Coors Lite. Jimmy Johns would be like Sam Adams or Sierra Nevada....there's better beers out there, but this will do. Subway - at least for me - won't do. I don't enjoy it. But I like this Jimmy Johns!
quiznossubway

yimmy yons
Firehouse Subs beats them all

The first is just plain truth. And I prefer O'Sir.

I do not like Jersey Mikes. For some reason they always taste dry, like I'm eating a desert.

Jimmy Johns is awesome. Far better than Quizno's which far exceeds Subway.

Not enough Firehouse Subs/Penn Station/Potbelly's in the area for me to consider them.

I'm not a anti-chain restaurant snob by any means but when it comes to subs prefer local places over chains. Subway's bread is horrid. I only had Jersey Mike's a couple of times and was underwhelmed. Quizno's wasn't bad if it was something like a toasted meatball or beef n cheese.

Danny's Pizza & Hoagies in Bethel Park, PA beats all of those. Too bad it is 7 hours from here.

There's just not a lot of great choices immediately near me that are cheap, fast and tasty. 5 Guys is close, but my wife doesn't eat meat and I'm not a huge fan of the taste 5 Guys leaves in my mouth (boooooooooooo)...plus, I hate being yelled at when I walk in the door. Had never been to Jimmy Johns before, but my wife likes the veggie sub (there's one by her house in Michigan) and I thought the Italian whatever was delicious.

I'm having dinner from a franchise restaurant tonight for the first time in my life. See if you can guess the franchise.
OH Bull####
He doesn't mean the first time at any franchise restaurant, he means the first time from one particular franchise restaurant.
:lmao: :lmao: Shuke gets confused by GM's somewhat poorly worded sentence about getting an erection but he completely understands GM's somewhat poorly worded sentence about getting food from a franchise restaurant.

:drool:Today is Friday and every Friday my boss springs for lunch for us. Today, we go to Sanchez Taquari (sp?) for their incredible Tortas. I get mine Al Pastor, but the rest of the gang goes with Carne Asada. Today, the 23 year old director of business delopment for the engineer firm that just moved in next door will be joining us. Say hello to Cheryl. She's a devout Mormon. Well, she drinks cola and gambles once in a while, but other than that, she worships the same jesus as Milt Romney.

I wish I had anything near me. Only thing around here is a burger king, which is the absolute worst of all burgers.

I love Fuddruckers. I hadn't been there in probably 7 years or more and broke down the other day on my way home from work and had one of the best burgers I'd had in a long long time. I just loaded that 1/2 pounder up with pepperoncinis (sp?) and pickles. So good.

In a related note (re: GM and franchise crapfood), some of the most uncomfortable 5 minutes of my life was when I worked at a Subway one summer. I'd quit smoking the debil's weed for 3 or 4 years then, but my shift partner talked me into smoking a blunt with him to make an otherwise boring night go by quicker. So there I am, high beyond reason, and the door opens to two cops.

They were there for our crappy food.

Now if you ever been to Subway, you have to interact a lot with the customers as you build their sandwich. I did this stoned out of my mind with both cops because my scumbag shiftmate ran into the backroom as soon as they approached.

ETA: I think that's the last time I ever did any illegal drugs. No shtick. Subway: scaring Canadians straight since 1997.

I can't believe I spent three days in Phily and didn't have a cheesesteak. Pretty poor planning on my part. I did, however, have something called 'scrapple' for breakfast at this old diner and it was incredible.

Man, my uvula is swollen up beyond belief today. Woke me up early this morning when I damn near choked on it in my sleep. At one point I coughed and it landed on my tongue. Second time this week, too... I really hope I'm not getting allergic to beer or something. Really wish shuke was here, he's my go-to guy for advice on my weird medical ailments.

Looks like we've run out of topics and are circling back for some repeats in here.
We're trying to keep Shuke from leaving and talk of food and pics of comely women tend to do just that. Be a part of the solution, Tre.
Thanks for the pep talk, gb. Anyone ever prepare flank steak? I'm doing flank steak carne asada style and mexican rice and beans tonight for the GF's parents.I bought a nice 2.5lb flank steak at the butcher yesterday and got it in an orange juice/red wine vinegar/soy sauce marinade after applying this carne asada rub I got at the mercado.Sounds like I just grill this thing quick on super high heat to med-rare and then slice it into thing slices against the grain. Wa la.Flank steak btw is basically the stomach muscle of the cow. So, it's thin and tough, which is why the marinade is so important. It has a distinct flavor and odor as well. Skirt steak is similar but more towards teh diaphragm area I guess.

I don't know, can you? I realize that yesterday I hit up Jack in the Box and then Jimmy Johns (plus a six pack of PBR) but I have never really been an Arby's guy. Can you really get a Phily Cheesesteak from Denny's? That's where I would go at 3am for chicken fried steak and eggs back in my wilder days.

F'in' Canadians - You were fine until the cop asked for bacon on his sub and then you put ham on it, right?

White House (or like "white horse") subs in Atlantic City is the best hoagie place ever.

I've done many flank steaks for carne asada just the way your describe and they are tremendous. In addition to the juice/soy/vinegar, I've used tequilla in the marinade. The marindade helps tenderize the meat, so hopefully this thing is in the fridge marinating right now. Should be excellent. Assume charcoal, not gas?Make some cuban black beans to go with this....

Congrats on eating at every hoagie place that ever existed.

Those don't even really compare to a real Philly cheesesteak. In Philly they use a special roll (amoroso) and use actual ribeye steak to make the Philly. They also cook it differently. I've been to a few places that has come close (oddly a cheesesteak place in Bullhead City, AZ, of all plces would fly in the rolls daily from Philly) but nothing really compares. It's weird, but true.

Anyone here a fan of Chimichurri? It is one of my favorite sauces. I recently marinaded shrimp overnight in it. Results: :moneybag:

Is this now a hyperbole-free thread? If so, I'll meander my way back out as I'm clearly the worst poster ever.

Yep, charcoal all the way. And it is in the fridge and I do have tequila. I can call PV and have her put some in there.I was going to do black beans with some queso fresca I bought at the mercado. Anything special I need to do to make them "cuban black beans"?
