GM's thread about nothing (39 Viewers)

Lived in earthquake country my entire life and never worried about it.
Why?

ETA: I mean this as a serious question. I really am unsure what to do. I have been in three earthquakes, including Northridge which destroyed most of my stuff but I was renting so not such a big deal. But earthquake insurance is very expensive.
it's just not cost effective. i've been in every major and minor quake in socal over the last 40 years. no one i know has had any major property damage that would require insurance to handle. does it happen? sure, but not to very many.

where were you for the northridge quake where most of your stuff was destroyed?

That's pretty much it.

And by not worrying about it I was actually talking about earthquakes in general.

I lived in West LA at the time.

Good point about the odds.

Seattle had a major quake in 900 AD that would have been pretty bad. The one in 1700 was also pretty bad. The ones in the 40's, 60's and in 2001 were badish....but not wipe you off the map bad. Considering you'll be moving in a week anyhow, I wouldn't waste the money. Pho CK earthquake insurance.

We don't have quake insurance, and we're right in the...well, you know. But I did some research into what our house was sitting on (pretty steady rock), and our house is retrofit. But we also have a mortgage.
I'll look into what we're on--good idea. It's flat, at least. We did look at some houses on the side of hills and got into geo-reports and such, which was a little disconcerting.

About time Louis CK franchises out and captures the East Asian market.

70k deductible? FTS.

This report from October really seems to underplay the effect of a Cascadia fault event.
While earthquakes can't be predicted, there is a 10-to-15 percent chance of the Cascadia fault slipping in the next 50 years.
I'm not a maff guy but pretty sure that also means there is a 85-90% chance that it won't happen.
I was referring more to the mention of 10,000 deaths and resulting tsunami.

You could also re-Coop some of the cost of retrofitting when you sell, I would imagine. I'd list that as a selling point.

I grew up in SoCal and have NEVER worried about earthquakes at all and find it cute how people that live in tornado alley think they are worse than tornados.

11. how come nobody will answer me about datonn selling meteors?
:shurg:If you told me that GM sells meteors I'd probably think that was weird, but are you really surprised to hear that datonn is doing it?
For one, if it hits the earth, it's a meteorite. so if he's really selling them, he has no idea what he's talking about.

If he's just making it up, I want to know more.

this is kind of how I feel about people who whine about snow, except I love snow and don't love hurricanes or earthquakes or tornadoes.

Never mind. Reading it again, it was a poorly written metaphor.

Total earthquake deaths in the US since 1965: Just over 200

1996 Blizzard: 154 deaths

1993 Blizzard: 318 deaths

2011 Joplin tornado: 162

Katrina: 1800 deaths.

lots of other things can kill you, including heat.

Like most people on the East Coast, we're supposed to get walloped by this storm in my piece of God's country. Upwards of 18" of snow, which is an incredible amount in this area. I have food and plenty of other assorted vices. I also have that damned generator I spent a fortune on last spring, only to have not lost power since - not that I'm wishing for that to happen or anything......
Since I bought our generator, we've lost power twice. For about 8 hours during Sandy, and then last week for about 6 hours during the mini-ice storm.

Last week, I kept waiting for the power to go back on, then decided I better get the generator fired up before dark. Took about an hour to get it out of the shed, get it running, find all the extension cords and plug in the most important appliances - fridge, TV, DVR. Less than 30 seconds later, the power came back on.

Looking forward to the real heavy snowfall after midnight tonight. I'm banking heavily on work being closed tomorrow - will start drinking as soon as I get home, and then light up once the kids go to bed.

Good point about property damage. I can't find any good resources to compare the two.

And as far as deaths caused by heat goes....I still have no idea how that happens in this day and age. 155 Americans died of "heat" in 2012?

Interesting chart

The property damage/death ratio of an earthquake is probably a lot higher for a quake than a tornado, but that's probably because the homes destroyed/homes damaged ratio for a tornado is a lot higher. And it's the homes that are completely destroyed which are a lot worse than the damaged ones, ldo.

You'd be amazed at how many older, poor people live without air conditioning in places where you NEED A/C (like Houston). Either they simply don't have it, or they don't want to run it due to the cost of the electricity.

I guess I would. Is it like the thing where you put a frog in hot water it will jump out but if you put it in cool water and then bring it to a boil slowly it will die?

As usual, I overreacted to the durecho-thing we had. I had a whole-house propane generator put in (think: 5 figures in $$). I'm way too dumb to make a portable genny work.

Be safe, my friend. Btw, I think the Ravens are gonna draft Sam at some point.

Earthquake insurance isn't worth anything unless the property is essentially destroyed. So you're not only betting there'll be an earthquake, but a catastrophic one for your house.

WHAAAA?Totally trying this later.

Your deductible will probably be 20% of the value of your home, and if you have 50.1% damage, many if not most states' laws consider that a constructive total loss of the property.

Deaths via Zooks-Warts: ZERO

Bizzards/tornados/earthquakes will result in possible death and property destruction. Sex with me will result in no deaths and minimal propert destruction and crying.

My window for getting a new job is pretty darn small right now. I pretty much have to find something and interview before I start showing. And even then, I don't know how comfortable I am starting a new job 5 months before going on maternity leave (even though my leave was only 4 days with my first). And then there's the whole pre-existing condition thing with insurance. So, it looks like I'm stuck listening to my crazy coworker sing, cry, and watch Hulu all day. And IM me Buzzfeed links. And start sobbing whenever she sees my child because seeing her causes her to "mourn the children that I will never have" (direct quote from her blog).

It's neat here.
I am not an expert, but I believe pregnancy can't be considered a pre existing condition.
