it's just not cost effective. i've been in every major and minor quake in socal over the last 40 years. no one i know has had any major property damage that would require insurance to handle. does it happen? sure, but not to very many.

where were you for the northridge quake where most of your stuff was destroyed?

I'm not a maff guy but pretty sure that also means there is a 85-90% chance that it won't happen.

Seattle had a major quake in 900 AD that would have been pretty bad. The one in 1700 was also pretty bad. The ones in the 40's, 60's and in 2001 were badish....but not wipe you off the map bad. We don't have quake insurance, and we're right in the...well, you know. But I did some research into what our house was sitting on (pretty steady rock), and our house is retrofit. But we also have a mortgage.

I'll look into what we're on--good idea. It's flat, at least. We did look at some houses on the side of hills and got into geo-reports and such, which was a little disconcerting.

You could also re-Coop some of the cost of retrofitting when you sell, I would imagine. I'd list that as a selling point.

Like most people on the East Coast, we're supposed to get walloped by this storm in my piece of God's country. Upwards of 18" of snow, which is an incredible amount in this area. I have food and plenty of other assorted vices. I also have that damned generator I spent a fortune on last spring, only to have not lost power since - not that I'm wishing for that to happen or anything......

Since I bought our generator, we've lost power twice. For about 8 hours during Sandy, and then last week for about 6 hours during the mini-ice storm.

Last week, I kept waiting for the power to go back on, then decided I better get the generator fired up before dark. Took about an hour to get it out of the shed, get it running, find all the extension cords and plug in the most important appliances - fridge, TV, DVR. Less than 30 seconds later, the power came back on.

Looking forward to the real heavy snowfall after midnight tonight. I'm banking heavily on work being closed tomorrow - will start drinking as soon as I get home, and then light up once the kids go to bed.

And as far as deaths caused by heat goes....I still have no idea how that happens in this day and age. 155 Americans died of "heat" in 2012?

The property damage/death ratio of an earthquake is probably a lot higher for a quake than a tornado, but that's probably because the homes destroyed/homes damaged ratio for a tornado is a lot higher. And it's the homes that are completely destroyed which are a lot worse than the damaged ones, ldo.

You'd be amazed at how many older, poor people live without air conditioning in places where you NEED A/C (like Houston). Either they simply don't have it, or they don't want to run it due to the cost of the electricity.
