Greatest Video Game Draft 2011 (1 Viewer)

18.07 Ico (ps2) 2001- PuzzleIco is a clever-enough hybrid of action game and brain-teaser, but its story of a nameless horned boy rescuing Yorda, a spectral girl, captured gamers’ imaginations with its subtlety. In a world of lonesome cathedrals and threatening shadows, the two must cross a language barrier to cooperate, expressing ideas on platonic love and universal language by poignantly—and now iconically—holding hands. It was an introduction to the minimalist directorial vision of Fumito Ueda; cemented in the later Shadow Of The Colossus and in 2010’s highly anticipated The Last Guardian, his worlds are rich with the suggestion of narrative, but they leave players to fill in the blanks. With Ico, Ueda became one of the earliest designers to introduce the idea that games can be art, and the title must be considered an essential milestone in the medium’s emotional maturation.
Its supposed to be an awesome game...However, no matter how awesome it is, I can't see it being anything but trashed in the puzzle category....

I'll be around if anyone would like to send me a list. I will follow it to the letter. I will even add video to your pick and make it all purty like.
Can I send you my picks even though I'll be here? :homer: I have been meaning to add flare to my selections but by the time I get caught up on editing in the first four posts its my pick again.
BTW, you DO know that we have a minimum of 15 pieces of flare, but we encourage our drafters to add 37 pieces of flare to their draft selections.
Love that movie. :death to copy machine:

I should probably start writing my dissertation on why my team of Video Games is the best team of video games, shouldn't I? :excited:
You mean you don't have one on file? :homer:
maybe some of it...But I like re-writing it every time its necessary...
Larry, how did you fair in the last one? I seem to remember your obsession with Chrono Trigger being your downfall there as well. Or did I just imagine the whole thing.
I don't remember any kind or judging being done in the last one...I did just compare teams, though...overlap = Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Marve vs. Capcom 2, FF Tactics, and FFIV.... :bag:  Did we do any kind of judging with the last one though?

I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".

Maybe there was not judging the last time. But yeah, I remember your Chrono Trigger/FF lovefest being really hard to defend.I am very interested to see what you plan on pulling out for Third Generation, the category I am judging. Some slim pickings, but some nice surprises still out there.

I PMed Acer at the start of his turn like he asked. At 5:05 I'll post my pick and then the clock is off until Monday morning.

I am not a fan of the XBox but I can appreciate some games they have are good. You know the lady you see walking around the mall with a beehive hairdo or one still wearing clothes from the 80's because she thinks she is cool or in style? You know that one? This team reminds me of one of those ladies. Same pants, shoes, dresses, hair ties, whatever else because she is trapped. larry is completely trapped and what is sad is the draft a couple of years ago, the overlap that he does have, did not change much. ITS A TRAP!!

18.11 - Super Columbine Massacre RPG - Worst Game

I don't care what sort of social commentary or introspection you're trying to promote - this is simply not a subject matter for a video game wherein you participate as one of the two killers. I like this review:

Do violent video games inspire horrific, violent acts in the real world? No one really knows for sure. Do horrific, violent acts in the real world inspire violent video games? Absolutely.

One of the most recent, Super Columbine Massacre RPG (or SCMRPG), re-created Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold's 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, from the perspective of the two disturbed teenagers. Deriving the game's content largely from video footage of the events, the pair's diaries, and quotes from various media figures, creator Danny Ledonne strove for a certain level of verisimilitude--though the part of the game where Harris and Klebold find themselves embarking on further adventures in Hell after their suicides is, presumably, conjecture.

The creator of SCMRPG claimed lofty aims. On his Web site--whose illegible look (blue and red text on a black background) is some sort of crime against good design itself--Ledonne says the game "asks more of its audience than rudimentary button-pushing and map navigation; it implores introspection." The site also links to press coverage of the game (typical example: the Denver Post's "Columbine Game Makes Us Ill") and a forum for discussion of the game and the actual shootings.

Whether Ledonne's site has any constructive value whatsoever is still up in the air. But as a game, Super Columbine Massacre RPG is appalling.
And the addition of the word "Super" to the title is also beyond ridiculous to me. Is this a regular old Columbine Massacre? No sir! This is a SUPER Columbine Massacre!

It's possible. You can always go back and play games you missed and realize they were outstanding and better than some of your old favorites. Or perhaps play one of your old favorites and realize it wasn't as good as you remember it. It happens.

Didn't biggamer send someone his picks or am I thinking of someone else? I know he said to skip him, just wondering if his picks are out there.

Edit: slax has them

I look at it this way. If I had never played video games before and I was to only pick one team's games to play, which team am I going to pick? There has to be variety, replayability, fun, and whatever else. Essentially, some games are the same game over and over with just a different story. That gets boring. Or, another way of looking at it is if I was on an island with only one team's games to play for the rest of my life, which team will it be?

Greatest Video Game Draft 2011
Not...
Favorite Video Game Draft 2011
agreed. However, there is quite a lot overlap between the two.Plus, if anything, Final Fantasy IV, VI, Tactics, and Chrono Trigger are REGULARLY critially acclaimed and put in top 25/50/100 lists of all time, still today. IX is the only one that could possibly be considered a reach, but even that one is bordering on most of those lists (and since this draft is like 300 games deep, it fits)

That is exactly how I'm gong about it. I like certain genres much more than others, but you have to switch it up so things don't get stale.

truthfully? I would pick mine...I have played FFVI and Chrono Trigger at minimum every other year or so since they were released... Final Fantasy IV every 2-3 years... consistently...I've played through FFIX like 4 times since it came out...and I'm not even close to the only one as is evidenced by the fact that IV, VI, and Chrono Trigger have been released 4-5+ times already with more remakes/re-releases of the same exact game with the same exact engine and only slightly enhanced graphics at best still coming... I mean IV has been on the SNES, PSX, Wonderswan Color, GBA, Nintendo DX, Virtual Console, and soon the PSP. 7 different re-releases. And everytime it is released millions of people worldwide flock to stores and buy it (many of them for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, some even the 7th time)...Its not like I'm picking random games that don't have critical appeal and don't have legitimicy here. They are legit games that belong in this group, and they are critically acclaimed, all time great games. This is re-affirmed time and time again when greatest games lists are released and they appear on it.

Pollardsvision selects,

18.13 Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES) 3rd Generation

19.01 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (XBOX 360) Best Multiplayer

I realize I've just punted the Multiplayer category, but I still think this game is unfairly criticized. Millions and millions played it and, for most part, had a ball. Some let grenade launchers, over powered killstreaks and commando ruin it for them, but it generally took them about 80 hours of playing it to get fed up. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it was for a hell of alot of people. Plenty of flaws, but not being fun isn't one of them. It may be the *******-child of 7th Gen games, but ultimately, it's twitch/arcade online shooting at it's finest.

The FPS market was as saturated as it's ever been, yet this game shattered sales records. Those millions bought, loved it, and now tell everyone it sucked.

Thanks madshot.I had to get my MW2 rant in somewhere.Castlevania III, btw, was an absolute steal this late. I think I have a real player in 3rd gen. now, and can use Tyson for something else.No rush or anything, but when you get a chance, you can probably go ahead and put Tyson in "Fighter". I could maybe weasle it in as a Beat'em Up, but I'd assume the judge would take points off since it's so far from what most would consider a Beat'em Up.Anybody think it'd get downgraded in "Fighter" too? It clearly works in the category, but has a far different feel than those others. Still might put Tyson in 3rd or Sports and shuffle some things around, but Tyson won't be in "Hack/Slash/Beat'em UP".

No problem. MW2 is my favorite CoD to date and I enjoyed the multiplayer. But I'm a gearhead at heart. :chainsaw:Fun fact: It's kind of funny that the chainsaw is what Gears of War is known for, but yet it is the weakest weapon in the game if you are good.

I prefer CoD4 more to MW2, but I don't hate MW2. It's still a fun game and I pop it in when I feel like playing it. Every multiplayer game has its overpowered, overused weapon that people cry over. It's nothing new.

I just realized that I must not have played new video games in the 4th generation.

I had a Genesis but had a few games and most have been taken

I have had this one in mind for a long time... before the PSX version was picked actually. But, I know I have a strong 3rd Gen game already and did not know where I could put this one other than platformer. Maybe story.

19.5- Shadow Of Destiny- PS2- Story

Holy ####! :goodposting:
Unfortunately, I played alone and was just too rinse and repeat for me. Was fun for the year or so I played
It did get a little old after a while. Teaming and doing task force missions livened things up. Now they've added crafting and all sorts of things to the game to give it more life. It's surprising that it is still going strong in a market full of MMO's trying to compete with the WoW juggernaut. It's funny to think that CoH came first. Also in comparison to Wow, it's a more friendly game. For people new to the game, you're likely to find someone to help you learn to play. Try finding that in WoW.

I'm not saying these are the top 6 games of all time, but to act like the Final Fantasy series isn't one of the greatest in gaming history and its best games don't belong in this draft is ridiculous... So what if I happen to have 4 of these games on my "team", that's like saying you have too many RBs in Fantasy Football...

The fact is that the games DESERVED to be drafted and it isn't like I was reaching for them, i picked them late. So, yeah, if you hate JRPGs you wouldn't like being stuck on a desert island with my team (although if you could learn to love them you'd have easily 400 hours of gameplay with the RPGs alone on one play through)...But that doesn't make the picks not worthy, they are VERY worthy picks...

Question. For my next pick, should I make the nerd pick, the badass pick, or a favorite pick? Time to choose.

19.07 best story- Max Payne (PC)

"The story is dark, edgy, and memorable—the kind of thing you won’t soon forget. Much of it is told through sequences of stylistic comic-book pages, adding to the old film noir feel and drawing you into the plot. The main character, Max, is compelling and sympathetic, and you’ll find yourself living inside his head and feeling his pains and successes. Though you don’t have a lot of choices, the storyline more than makes up for that lack with numerous twists and surprises. It’s not a long game, but its complexity (particularly for a shooter) makes it well worth the ride."

19.09 Grim Fandango, Best Story, PC 1998

You play Manny Calavera, a mid-level worker at the the DOD (Department of Death) who's trying to work off his sins in life so that he can get to his final reward. As a reaper, Manny frees incoming souls from their shrouds, finds out what kind of underworld travel packages their goodness in life has earned them, and then sends them on their way.

Unfortunately, business hasn't been very good for Manny of late. As the game begins, Calavera is told that he must sell a premium travel package to a soul or lose his job. In his search, Manny uncovers a hideous plot, a beautiful woman, and a crew of loyal friends (not necessarily in that order). The world is a rich one, complete with its own laws, its own personality types, and landscapes.

The game has received multiple awards and been placed on the top of many top games lists throughout the years, including best pc game, most underrated game of all-time and best story. Of course, the latter, in this case, is for the judge to decide.
