"Hannibal" the TV show (1 Viewer)

This show is terrible.
Yada yada, your face, etc.
Actually watched the entire first EP. What in the crap was that?
You're really missing quite a bit of solid entertainment by bailing on shows after one or two episodes.
Unpossible
What do you consider to be a good show? Hannibal is arguably the best show on network TV right now.

Fixed.

Stop taking OPM's very smelly bait imo.

Somebody bump the Walking Dead thread so he'll leave this one alone. :o

Am I the only one who didnt realize Hannibal's new patient's role? And who her brother, that beat her is supposed to be? It ties to one of the Hannibal movies.

The guy who Hannibal disfigures in Hannibal and he tries to get his revenge by feeding Lecter to pigs. He'll be played by Michael Pitt
pretty cool

Yeesh. That's going to be creepy.

This show had been terrific for most of its run, but it's gone downhill fast over the last two weeks. We've gotten a boring episode followed by a stupid one. I hope it gets back on track next week.

One of two things is happening between Hannibal and Will Graham right now: either Hannibal is succeeding in turning Will into a cannibal killer just like him, or Will is succeeding in tricking Hannibal into thinking that's what he's become. My money would be on the latter, if only because it would be a vastly bigger deviation from the source material than if Chilton turns out to be dead, or the change in characterization of Margot Verger. But it's a credit to what Bryan Fuller, Hugh Dancy and company are doing with the character that I'm at least willing to consider the possibility.

Watching "Naka-Choko" felt a bit like attending a performance by a great magician. Even if you go in knowing it's fake, and determined to find the truth behind the illusions, you're damned if you can actually identify how the trick works. If Will is running a long con on Dr. Lecter — which was implied in the ice fishing conversation with Jack a couple of episodes ago — then he's covering his tracks brilliantly, for both Hannibal and us. It's entirely possible that once he had custody of Freddie Lounds, for instance, he laid out the actual plan for her, and she agreed to play along, but the mutilation and display of Randall's corpse at the museum seems the kind of thing that would be harder for Will to get out from under, legally. (It's also among the show's creepiest murder tableaux so far, and also strange to see Will inserting himself into a crime scene in which he played some kind of role.) And given Dr. Lecter's superhuman powers of smell and taste, how is he convincing him that he's brought human meat as this week's protein?

Again, I imagine there will be explanations for everything — note that we still haven't seen a non-dream depiction of how Randall died, for instance — but it's exciting to at least imagine the possibility that this isn't a feint, but Will getting sucked too deeply into Hannibal's worldview. It's an episode about the merging of their two psyches. Will imagines himself in bed with Alana while she's in bed with Hannibal, and when Freddie spots Will lurking in the barn, it's presented in a very similar way to Beverly Katz spotting Lecter in his dungeon. And, of course, their faces blend together in the final shot. I think Will Graham is still probably a hero, but both he and the show want us to feel otherwise.

Some other thoughts:

* After hearing talk of Margot's brother Mason for several episodes, he finally appears in the form of Michael Pitt, all but unrecognizable from his days on "Boardwalk Empire" as Jimmy Darmody. It's a strange performance, and a strange look, that fits right in with the epic weirdness of this show. But as with so much of the Verger family story, I feel it's being presented in a very fragmented fashion, like Fuller expects us to understand more about Mason and Margot — why, for instance, Mason is training his pigs to eat live humans — than he's told us so far.

* Hannibal Lecter owns and knows how to operate a theremin, because of course he does.

* Fuller has said that Katharine Isabelle, who plays Margot, was the runner-up to play Jaye on his "Wonderfalls" — a role that instead went to Caroline Dhavernas, who now plays Alana Bloom. It's a minor piece of "Hannibal" trivia, until you get to the sequence that cuts between the actual Jaye sleeping with Dr. Lecter while the would-be Jaye is having sex with Will Graham. Given Margot's proclivity for parts that Will does not possess, Will's interest in Alana and Hannibal's asexual affect, it seems as if Alana is the only one of the four who's genuinely excited to be with her partner that night.

* The hazy editing style of that sex sequence — similar to what we saw with the introduction of Margot a few weeks back — is not my favorite of the show's many stylistic devices, in that it winds up calling attention to itself in a way a lot of the show's other visual tricks do not, in part because it doesn't feel illuminating of anything about the characters or the world.

* Hannibal mentions a sister, in the past tense. Has this come up before and I've forgotten, or is it a mystery to be dealt with down the road?

* Another reference to lambs, this time in the context of lamb farming, as Fuller keeps teasing the idea of one day getting to "Silence of the Lambs," even as that book is the one part of the Lecter canon he doesn't have access to.

my only comlaint about the show is the constant background music. it wasn't as bad this week, but last week i could barely hear what they were saying because of the friggin annoyig music

I've liked it except for the episode where they find the Asian chick all sliced up. Man, it was really distracting in that one.

So far, this is the best show on TV this year period. Game of Thrones and Mad Men are chasing it, and I don't think they're going to catch it.

I'm not fishing. This show is pretty bad.
:bs:
I think you should take his opinion seriously. He has, after all, watched an episode.
Does it change dramatically after the pilot?
Drastically.
Liar

Seriously, nowadays it's all about cats and special live appearances by The Pixies.

What a great episode. I thought they were a bit off their game last week (until the ending) but this week was once again outstanding.

I don't understand why Sepinwall doesn't get where the human meat could be coming from if not Freddie. Did they not just show a cooler full of dead killer meat?

Although I had a similar thought in wondering if Hannibal would be able to tell frozen from fresh. But as an accomplished hunter maybe Will knows all the tricks to making sure frozen meat is done right (which I have no clue about, myself).

I also disagreed about his assessment of the sex montage. I thought it was revealing, just not sure in which direction. It could be taken as a melding of Hannibal and Will or it could be taken as Will staying in control and the sex reminding him that he has to save Bloom from Hannibal.

I also think the sequence depicting Randall's death was probably meant to be taken as the truth of what happened, all part of Will's understanding of how he has to lure Hannibal in. It's interesting that he started with the shotgun then dropped it once he saw the intruder and (I assume) realized it wasn't Hannibal himself coming for him. At that point, it became more important to follow Hannibal's script.

I also think they did a great job with Will's imagining speaking to the deceased Randall, since again it was open to interpretation between Will the Madman or Will the Hero.

As long as Will continues to see Hannibal as a black stag, I will assume he sees him as pure evil and is still the hero.

The timeline is going to have to be condensed now either way, unless the show is ready to tip it's hand and Will really has gone mad. If Freddie really is in protective custody then I can't see her staying there for a protracted time.

Has this been renewed/cancelled yet?
It's not on the 2013 NBC Fall schedule.
I read an article a couple of days ago that this program is on the bubble to be cancelled. Along with Revolution, Nashville, Trophy Wife, Almost Human, and a few others.
If they do I will burn the TV Only GoT thread to the ground. TO THE GROUND, I SAY.
Decent chance it'd get picked up by another outlet. There's some kind of unusual production deal that makes it more economical than most shows. Which is why NBC gave it a 2nd season in the first place.

I am a little behind on the Margot and brother story. I don't remember missing an episode, but this came out of left field for me. Where did this story come from? I remember she was a patient, then bumped into Will after an appointment, now she's a regular?

That's pretty much it so far. They feature heavily in one of the movies we are getting closer to in the timeline.

Off the top of my head current/recent dramas...

Breaking Bad

Mad Men

Game of Thrones

House of Cards

Boardwalk Empire

Treme
While all of those were/are great shows, none are on network TV. There is no better show on ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX/PBS right now than Hannibal. And if you say the Good Wife, there is a hungry herd of pigs that smell bacon.

You just asked what I considered to be a good show.

I have no idea what the best show is on network TV. And being "the best show on network tv right now" is like saying "this is the best album by Menudo".
