HC Bill Belichick (2 Viewers)

He just wants to stay fresh for his interviews upcoming in January if not sooner
I can't see him coaching college but it doesn't hurt to see what they are willing to pay you
He's really a little old to be starting his college career
He needs maybe 2 good seasons to catch Shula for most wins ever in the NFL, think he will get the chance to do that
If Andy Reid wants to stick around, he will pass BB in no time. Reid is 6 years younger than Bill. BB has 302 regular season wins + 31 playoff wins = 333. Reid has 269 regular season wins and 26 playoff wins = 295 (plus whatever KC gets the rest of the year). The Chiefs have been averaging a combined 15.5 wins a season. Even if BB comes back, Reid will pass him fairly quickly. Maybe Reid will opt to retire instead, but the path to the most wins is there for the taking. (Shula has 328 regular season wins and 347 overall wins). At the rate the Chiefs are going, it could only take 3 years for Reid to pass Shula.

I can’t see him taking that job, their recruiting class is towards the bottom of the entire conference, I think only 9 signed to date. Easy pass if I’m coach BB

Coach Prime took over one of the worst P5 schools and made them a top 25 team in his 2nd year. Transfer portal can be a quick fix just ask IU fans.

Report:

Bill Belichick has agreed to become the next UNC coach. Belichick handed the school a 400 page “organizational bible” with structure, payment plans, staffing choices etc. decisions on whether to commit with UNC. He is expected to know their decision within 24 hours

"greatest coach of all time" can't get hired into the NFL.

Odd.
Not that odd. He likely wanted a ton of money, total organizational control, and accountability for those that don't buy in. Not a lot of teams out that that would recreate what he had in NE. When he was getting considered last year, part of the issue was top level people in key positions on teams would have to give up control and / or were in danger of losing their jobs. Hard to secure buy in from a franchise when it's way easier to bring in younger / weaker personalities and you get to keep your job on top of it.

From what I have heard, there are a lot of demands he laid on UNC. That included hiring Ben McDaniels (Josh's brother) and Matt Patrica, as well as naming Stephen Belichick as head coach in waiting when Bill steps down.

As a rival NC State fan, I'm certain Belichick will be an upgrade on the field over Mack Brown. I question how well he will handle recruiting and the portal. Maybe he just intends to delegate all of that...?

How reliable is this source? Not seeing anyone else I follow reporting this, but am seeing a few reports which say it's not a done deal yet.

I believe the wording is misleading. I believe it means BB would be willing to become the UNC head coach IF UNC agrees to the said to be non-negotiable terms in his 400-page football bible. IMO, that means they haven't agreed to anything yet.

Considering the list of family and friends going on the payroll I'm sure there will be someone to take care of those details. As long as he doesn't put Matt Patricia in charge of "motivating" incoming high school kids.

I was reading another report that said Belichick was a little stunned or mildly disturbed that none of the 3 teams that already fired their HC had reached out to him
There would be some NFL teams I think he would pass on, JAX is definitely one of them
I think he wanted the Bears job since they already had their QB taken, he could settle in with a reasonably talented Defense and get things fixed quickly there
I'm not sayin Coach BB would be a winner in Chicago but I could see him wanting to interview there.

He's in charge of school supplies like pencils and erasers, now sit up please!

Thank you and I now see I missed the part in Winguts post about "how he is expected to know their decision within 24 hours". Read some of the comments after that post and thought people were commenting like it was done.

Anyway I'm surprised he's considering it, even if his demands are exorbitant and he's given what he wants. I've heard before he's a lot more money driven then people think of him as being. No idea on any of that. I guess it's easier to conclude he's not feeling great about his potential NFL options this upcoming cycle but I've been under the assumption he'd give this more time to see what might open up.

He went on McAfee's show yesterday and sold his program as a "pipeline to the NFL." Every indication is that he wants this job.

Update this afternoon from the Athletic says he is "considering an offer" from UNC but the parties are still negotiating "multiple key terms": https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5984362/2024/12/10/bill-belichick-unc-football-coach-update/

My gut feeling is that he would be a terrible hire for a top program that's already in the hunt for the NCAA playoffs year in/out, but could provide good value for a school that is in a similar position as Colorado was when it hired Sanders.

I don't think Belichick should be coaching college football
Seems like a terrible fit and Brady also said "No!" on this
Belichick is trying to shake the trees in the NFL, pretty sure he wanted the Giants' possible opening
Using UNC as leverage even if he has to back out of the deal before he really starts, i would think UNC could see that coming
How desperate is UNC?

Chapel Bill: six-time Super-Bowl-winning head coach Bill Belichick is finalizing a deal to become the new head coach at North Carolina, sources tell me, @PeteThamel and @ClowESPN.

Belichick is going back to school, to where his father served as an assistant coach in the 1950s.

Would not have guessed this a week or two ago but I like it...will be beyond interesting to watch...as Anarchy pointed out I don't think any NFL team was going to give him full control over a franchise and with the possible exception of Jerry I don't think any GM/Executive would be comfortable/secure enough to hire him as just a HC (and if Jerry was gonna do it last year was the time)...also, he's 73 in April and I don't think that is appealing to an NFL franchise...UNC is so intriguing...overall it is one the best programs in the country (I am talking all sports) but football has never been able to make the jump to that top-tier...I gotta believe they have given BB carte blanche to do what he wants and get them there...I would love to know what got the ball rolling here as I have never seen BB connected with UNC in the past (he has certain schools/Coaches he has relationships with)...he must have some connection to someone important there that helped facilitate this (not sure how involved LT is there but he went there and loves BB) because it does feel a little random...looking at the big picture of today's landscape I could see him doing really well there...today's portal situation is perfect for him and while the ACC is a Power 5 Conference there are no legit heavyweights in it right now since Clemson has regressed from their heyday a few years ago...while BB was a mess as a GM post-Brady he could still coach with the Pats and I think he will have a solid advantage in that area on most Saturdays...one thing that will be very interesting to watch is the NIL..BB was never one to overpay players at the NFL-level so how will he handle that at this level...I do think having his son take over for him would be a big thing for him...he is definitely a family man, and I could see that being important to him...looking forward to learning more about this but overall I just think this is a great story and like Prime and Colorado UNC now becomes must watch TV to college football fans.

Mike Lombardi has quit his media gig to join Bellichick as his GM at NC.

I don't really care other then I consider it a loss of an informative podcast listen. Lombardi could be a blow hard to often, repeat the same stuff over and over, always defend Bill and The Patriot way not matter what, but if you could endure some of that he'd drop some good info out, info typically not reported by more main stream sources.

I have never seen BB connected with UNC in the past (he has certain schools/Coaches he has relationships with)
I'm sure there is more to it, has to be, like this probably means nothing but all I can connect right now is what you like heard about his dad being an assistant at NC a long long time ago which would have had young Bill living in the area a young kid, shown in this photo: https://x.com/LeePaceTweet/status/1865044512109682914.

And there is this from Mike Sando:
Bill Belichick's late father, Steve, helped get Bill into the NFL thru his friend, George Boutselis, who in the 70s worked under #colts coach Ted Marchibroda, who gave Bill his first job in the league.George Boutselis was a quarterback at UNC and coached there after Steve Belichick coached there.

If you told me BB was going to coach college I would have bet a lot of $ it would be at Navy.

Same

Surprised. Disappointed.

As a NE fan, I want him going for the NFL win record. Obviously, there is zero interest this coaching cycle which is surprising.

I think he'll do a fantastic job building the operation in this new fangled world of college football, but I fear in the end, he's performance is middling in terms of wins and losses and it doesn't do much for his legacy. And at that point, the door could be completely closed on the NFL.

Besides his father being an assistant coach in the 50s, is there another connection between Belichick and the state of North Carolina? I haven't read up on his bio.

I think Bill will HATE college/NIL

Its not about winning now, its about making $$$$$$

I think the difference for him is he won't be coaching long there so the current landscape will benefit him in a big way...when his son takes over he will really have to deal with the nonsense.

No clue how much this matters but BB is a huge lax guy and UNC is a top-tier program whose D-Coordinator is Dave Pietramala who BB is very tight with...when he was at Hopkins BB was there a decent amount...this is one of the guys in BB 's inner-circle so I could see him having some influence as far as selling BB on UNC.

Isn't Reid bound to overtake him anyways over the next couple of seasons? Reid is also a couple of years younger.

Bigger picture, this might just save the ACC. @Capella @Tau837 comments or am I crazy?
The top of the conference is more open than it's been in years IMO...FSU could quickly rebound but no guarantee, and Clemson is trending down despite the ACC Champ.
UNC will also garner $20MM of NIL, so BIll will have support.

It'll be interesting to see how players in college of this NIL/Portal era grasp his complex schemes...which was a struggle for Saban recently.

I reviewed this in another thread. If Reid keeps coaching, he will pass Shula in 3 seasons. Who knows what his master plan is, but Reid would quickly catch up if he wants to keep at it.

I think this is an indictment on BB really only wanting a job where he would be Emperor Palpatine. Those type of opportunities weren't available in the NFL, so he took his bag of deflated ball and shuffled off to the NCAA instead.

I don’t think anyone should be surprised by this…I never thought it was realistic that he would willingly answer to any non-Owner…the only two guys where I thought it was a possibility was Jerry and Howie Roseman…in fairness BB is 72 and that is just not an age where you are teaching an old dog new tricks.

This is my completely outside looking in take as well.

That is a great point…if BB is going to be successful there it will be with hired guns…this is not 20 years ago where a kid is staying 3 or 4 years…he is definitely going to have to streamline things which will be interesting to watch…one of his issues with the Pats (outside of the GM decisions) was he was not overly flexible when he lost Brady and Dante Scarnecchia…it will be even less of a one size fits all in today’s college climate…this is just another reason why this story is so fascinating.

That's the way I see it too. There are probably teams in the NFL who would hire him as a HC but nobody is willing to give him the control that he wants. It's kind of reminiscent of George Allen. Obviously, BB has had a lot more success than Allen did but it's the same type of situation. Allen couldn't get a job in the NFL after being fired by Wash because he demanded too much control over player personnel. He ended up taking a job at Long Beach State at age 70.
