late February-early March, 2021
Dan Campbell, introduced a few weeks ago as the Lions 28th Head Coach, tours a Ford factory at the height of COVID.
What's the old saying, "That guy could sell ice to an eskimo"?
But he's not a specious salesman from
Glengarry Glen Ross, nor is he the tragic Willie Loman from
Death of a Salesman, who errs in believing charm alone - far more than hard work and persistence - was the key to becoming a great man.
This seemed pretty cheesy when it came out. In fact, my cynical thought was, "
Holy cow....the pandemic is killing the global economy, Ford's inventory is massively backed up, and these cheapskates (general reference to the Ford family)
are loaning out there football coach as a motivational speaker. They have no shame."
This has nothing to do with football or coaching, but really is the essence of who Dan Campbell is as a person.
He genuinely cares about Detroit. He played here almost 20 years ago, he knows this is a football town with a ihistorically bad franchise. He came here thinking if they ever had a winner, they could be playing in front of the loudest fans in the league. That's not lost on other former players - he's not the only NFL alumni who has voiced the opinion (paraphrasing) "If the Lions ever figure out what they have, man, look out. That fanbase is unbelievable."
