Just curious. Car wash industry seems to be booming around here.

And I mean the outside. Keeping the interior clean/devoid of trash is a completely different topic.

They recently opened a fancy, automatic car wash here where they sell memberships which cost about 50% more for unlimited washes than to just go through one time. Plus free vacuums and mat washers. I’ve been going 3-4 times per week.

So, it depends. 1.) Son's Honda Accord sits outside so it gets washed maybe once a month? 2.) Wifey's Honda Pilot gets washed every other month inside and out. 3.) My F150 gets washed maybe quarterly because I try not to drive it in bad weather and in between washes I use a detailer spray and a spray wax, I do the inside myself. 4.) I've got an old Corvette that never gets washed. I bought it 2012 (it's a 2009) and I washed it one time in 2012 and I've never washed it since, there's just no need. I detail the inside of it once a year and when it gets dusty I just use a waterless car wash on it or detailer spray (Griot's Garage) and a spray wax (again from Griot's Garage) to put a layer of wax on it once or twice a year.

Kinda in between your first two options. I probably wash my car every couple of weeks (so 2x a month). I feel like when I wash my car every week—it’s kinda wasteful as my car is still solidly clean after a week. I feel like my car starts to feel dirty again right around the 2 week mark since the last wash.

Went with about 4 but closer to 6/7
Wash it more often in winter than summer to wash the salt off. Car is white so takes a lot to make it look dirty in the summer

Right now everything is yellow, so what's the point? Though, on average, a month per wash or so.

One year in NYC I moved from a predominately Hasidic Jewish neighborhood to a predominately Dominican neighborhood, and let me tell you, the difference is noticeable.

I do all my own car washing and detailing. I use all Chemical Brothers products.

I wash my cars every two weeks.

Wax every three to four months (South Florida…salt air and year round sun).

I save thousands doing it myself and I actually enjoy it.

Like Tin Cup, I got a membership. I get one whenever I drop off a kid for an hour, since we live 30 minutes from all of their activities. Michigan salt sucks.

Minivan couple times a year, usually in spring and then a few times over the summer if it gets excessively dirty/muddy or we go on a road trip and it gets covered in dead bugs

2010 focus it’s been years

Couple times a month. Wash it myself.

Those automatic washers can knock off your tire weights. Plus after a few washes the components get dirty and will leave very subtle streaks on your car and windows. You can barely see them.

The older I get the less I care about a dirty car.

Last washed mine about 6 months ago before a drive to Key West.

we’ll take our cars in to get washed maybe 2-3x a year and wash them at home a couple times in the spring (get that pollen off 🤢) and summer.
we use the shop vac in the cars probably 6x / year.
But then we don’t have issues with salt here, that would change things a bit.

This country's obsession with washing their car is something I'll never understand. I get wanting to wash off the salt for those that live in cold states but in the southern states, people are washing cars that go in to the washer looking brand new. It's kind of sad because at the same time the local government is putting out restrictions on lawn irrigation.

Never thought of this happening but it seems possible. Probably most would never notice since most, well me anyway, don't pay attention to the placement of the weights to begin with.

Knock off what now?
Your wheel balancer weights

eta: Although I think they have been doing ours on the inside now
I never knew this was a thing. Tire weights? I can't be the only one, right?
Yeah. When you get tires installed there are weights on the rims to balance your tires. About 6 months ago I went to the car wash and right after I'm driving on the highway and something doesn't seem right. There was just a really slight wobble to the front end.

I was due for an oil change so I took the truck to the Ford dealer and had them check the front end. One of the tires was missing one of the weights. The guy asked me if I'd been to a car wash lately.

So they just balanced them and off I went.

interesting conversation. I do the advertising and marketing for a local car wash. So now I'll be using all of you as my own, free focus group. lol

Those who have monthly memberships, do you use them regularly? Feel you get your money's worth?

Those who don't, what would make you try a monthly membership program?

once a month to get the windshield sealant or whatever it is that prevents streaking

in winter especially that's crucial

I buy cars that hide dirt well where you cannot tell if they are dirty or not. I also park in my garage so it doesn't sit outside to get worse. Based on that I wash it probably about once every couple of months so I went with the closest option of 4 times a year.

I hate washing cars as it seems like a never ending battle.

I've got a $25/mo membership, and use it twice per week. The car wash is right down the street from my daughter's dance class, so I drop her off then go through the tunnel on my way to whatever errand I'm going to run while I wait for her. Probably once a month I use the free vacuums you get with the membership and I'll wipe down the interior dash and surfaces and Windex the windows.

Is it worth it? For the majority of drivers I'd say probably yes. It hits the high points. Gets off the pollen/dust/general dirt. Probably quarterly I do a good scrubbing of the entire vehicle, particularly the front end to get off the bug guts and get the wheels good and clean.

One note though - the car wash I use has 4 "tiers" - basic wash all the way up to the one with Simonizing/wax/etc. I have the 2nd tier one. Not really sure that the top of the line one ($45/mo) is worth it. The air dryers aren't perfect so you still get spots/streaks, the wheel wash can't get all the different crevices between everybody's differently shaped spokes, etc.

Absolutely. I love a clean car and especially here in Michigan keeping the salt, etc cleaned off extends the life and maintains some resale value as well.

I do the $50ish inside/outside wash once every other month, and then alternate with one of those $10 jobbers at the gas station.

My car is basically one of the few "nice" things I own so I like taking care of it.... especially the inside.

What colors have you found hide dirt (and scratches) best?
