Where are you again??If anyone is keeping score out there LIPA as given me the 10th as their restoration estimate. That would leave me without power for 13 days. Place your bets.

I'm assuming you're referring to the gas issues. At least in my area of NJ (West-Central, Flemington), things are A LOT better than they have been. I saw several stations that now have temporary generators piped into their power supplies to get them up and running. Most stations are up and open regardless of whether line power is restored or not. This has brought the lines down to a very manageable level. I drive by 3 stations on my way to work, and the average line is only 2-4 cars. Added plus is that most have one-way traffic in and out, and my gas tank is on the right, which typically means shorter lines as I think more cars have the door on the left. I don't know why NJ seems better off here...the only thing I can think of is population density per gas station. Is Jersye having the same problems? Did Christie/Obama just kick ### down there or are we just hearing more about NY because the population is larger?
For all the problems the power companies are having, gotta hand it to the MTA for getting things normalized fairly rapidly.Queens Midtown Tunnel to Open FridayGovernor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced that the Queens Midtown Tunnel, which was flooded from roadway to ceiling following Hurricane Sandy, will reopen to passenger vehicles only in time for Friday morning's rush hour.
So, people actually call LIPA and ask for a restoration date? Reeeally? Knowing what I know of the customer service end of a BIG company?-Garden City, NY, I believeWhere are you again??If anyone is keeping score out there LIPA as given me the 10th as their restoration estimate. It's not like it's a case of the Squeaky WheelTM or anything...I'm in nj, still no power and no credible eta on its return. There are many like me still waiting. Is Jersye having the same problems? I don't get this. We went through this in NC and while it lasted a couple of weeks, stations were only out for a day or two. Prices went to $5 though. This is one instance where MT is right. Allow a free market and there would already be more gas there than people could use. Really no incentive for companies to loss profits to supply the area.according to bloomberg gas shortage may last a few more weeks![]()

Yeah, we're at $3.15 to $3.25. Difference is the state tax. Drops around election time every four years. Throwing the conspiracy theory aside, there's too much gas inventory right now. I would suggest that if stations in NY/NJ were allowed to charge $5-$7 per gallon right now the shortage would be over already because inventory would be trucked that way. Wouldn't surprise me if our recent drop of 30-40 cents since Sandy is related to supply that's not being used up that way.Got a buddy that just moved to SC last week, he said gas prices were $2.99 was pretty shocked how cheap it was (I think this was for regular, non-premium gas).'BassNBrew said:I don't get this. Raising the price to $5-$7 will also affect demand. People will wait to fill up until necessary, freeing up gas to those who need it. I'm very much in favor of allowing market forces to help assist those in need in these situations (I made a case in the Katrina thread that higher prices would enable a gas station owner to stay opened in Houston, to pump up anyone currently out of gas, and would keep those with a half a tank or more from filling up and potentially draining that station. $ is really the only way to determine who needs it most.)Yeah, we're at $3.15 to $3.25. Welcome back to civilizationJust got my power back. Un-freakin-believable. My NEXT door neighbor on my right got his power back 9 days ago, was only out for 24 hours. My opposite side next door neighbor was in the dark like me. Here is the kicker:Last night, in a windy snow storm, I see a pickup with a yellow light. I jump in my truck and follow him around the corner, where I catch up to him. He is walking around with a flashlight in the dark. I tell him I can show him where this 20 house circuit has downed lines... we walk the backyards. I show him, the main is fine, the poles are fine, just two feeds to two houses are down. This guy (from Cape Cod) is thanking ME for showing him where the lines are down! He's thanking ME for being a nice guy! Anyways, about 24 hours later, I'm back on line and it's because of his efforts. I spoke to him several more times today. 240 hours, 14 minutes later... heat. Lights. TV. Innernets. He didn't even hold it against me when he noticed my JETS jacket. Told him I'd burn it and become a Pats fan if he turned my power back on. He asked for beer instead (jokingly, of course) Man, what a sucky experience. I was already planning a move to PA, and that is now on the front burner. I hate Long Island. Over taxed, over priced and under maintained. The total incompetance displayed by Gov Cuomo, LIPA and the local govt is beyond belief. Still can't get gasoline. Have a new snowblower which I bought last year and still haven't ever used... no gas. Shoveled 6 inches of snow today instead. The guy from Cape Cod told me the neighbors have me to thank for getting back on line. Said it might have been weeks more if I hadn't followed him. LIPA had never even assessed the damage on my circuit. This guy called it "an easy fix". It still took 24 hours. This thread is far too long to read now... can't catch up 10 days of posts in any case. At least I have a home, a home that is slowly warming up. Lost about 100 roof tiles, and about $1200 in trees and shrubs from the nor'easter with it's heavy snow. That snow crushed every small tree and all the shrubs I had. Never saw that happen before either. Will have to replant the entire property before we can sell it now. Anyways, hope you other FBG'rs came thru it OK. Now... to watch some football.

I know exactly what you are going through and how it feels. This experience was far worse than I had ever imagined it could be. Always cold, sleeping in a hoodie. Living out of a cooler on the porch. I was largely alone for the duration, which made it worse. My best and just about last true friend died last spring. I surely missed his company during this. I know we would have been playing non stop low stakes cribbage by candle light for the 10 days. Be grateful for family and friends. When I move to PA, I will be closer, nearby in fact, to family. Can't wait.My neighbor just got off the phone with PSE&G. Apparently now I shouldn't expect my power to be back on until Thanksgiving. #### this ####. Once this is all over there had better be some serious investigation into their infrastructure, preparedness, and response to this. One after another, all I keep hearing on the radio are previous employees, out-of-state linemen who have come to help, etc. and they all have the same message: The equipment they're using is painfully outdated, they're trying to replace parts that haven't even been manufactured in 25 years, they're waiting for support and direction from management that isn't coming, the whole thing is just a mess. The corporate officers keep releasing statements that there's no shortage of parts, they're doing their best, power will be back on for everyone by tonight tomorrow Sunday morning Sunday night god knows when. Christie vs Cuomo? The response in my area has been amazing. State, power companies, all of them have been on top of everything and have been getting everything back up to speed in a very good amount of time.
Haven't really paid attention to New York that much. This week at work has been hell between trying to figure out moved court dates, closed courthouses, clients with no power or way to contact them and the clean up that we are trying to do for ourselves and family and volunteering every minute we can through the various churches in the area. But at least in this area, if Christie is taking the lead and forcing things to get done, he's doing a perfect job.Christie vs Cuomo? The response in my area has been amazing. It's hard to really know for sure is Christie is doing that much better a job than Cuomo, but is sure APPEARS that way. Cuomo has Bloomberg to take care of NYC. Christie is on the radio several times a day giving updates, status reports and taking questions. We rarely hear anything from Cuomo. When Cuomo does talk about LIPA, all he says is that he will hold them accountable. Well, I hold CUOMO accountable. Why?He knew LIPA's track record. He should have from the VERY beginning, hired some energy distribution consultants and partnered them with some his trusted staffers to stand over LIPA's shoulder and monitor their abysmal efforts, stepping in when it was needed, and it was needed from day 1.It's hard to really know for sure is Christie is doing that much better a job than Cuomo, but is sure APPEARS that way. Up until now I have been a fan of Cuomo's, but between his and blowhard Francessa's LIPA bashing since about day two I have grown weary of both of them. They have put bulls eyes on LIPA employees backs. To be honest, I don't get some people. I haven't had power since the storm hit. We have just dealt with it. Camping in our house. I haven't called anybody for an estimated date of restoration. What is the point of that? Why does everyone assume that a storm of this magnitude in a wooded area like ours should be up and running in a week? How arbitrary is that? Why not 3 days? The outrage over the lack of communication regarding inspections of flooded properties I can get behind, but all of this talk about lack of communication and why LIPA can't give people an accurate restoration date is just crazy.Cuomo has Bloomberg to take care of NYC. Instead he thinks his occassional temper tantrums will have some effect. If this is how Cuomo reacts in a crisis, he can not only wave any aspirations of ever living in the White House goodbye, he can kiss the governor's mansion goodbye too.
Christie ordered the even odd gas law into effect and Cuomo sat with his thumb up his keester for days before doing anything about the gas crisis.
Cuomo's staff? He fired is top guy in the emergecy management office because the guy had LIPA take down a tree (which was NOT on a power line) off his personal property on his LI residence! Cuomo has not set FOOT on LI since the hurricane. Christie is out there every day managing the recovery efforts. Cuomo throws tantrums. Christie works with FEMA, Obama and Homeland security every day. Cuomo throws more tantrums.

That's brutal, celt. In the Cathedral Garden's co-op, or neighborhood? The Village has enough issues on a normal day, can't imagine this, not to mention the potential spill over. When things get better (and they will, eventually), I'd love to tell you about what my company is doing in the Village, a huge revitalization that should provide some ease to neighboring residents as downtown Hempstead Village should be a far more safe and economically vibrant place. It's amazing the dichotomy that exists between the Hempstead-GC border.ETA - Was with the Hempstead Mayor yesterday, the Village is having a predictably tough time through this, and doesnt have the political might to get resources their way as deserved.Day 12 no power. And to add to the fun there we'd three home invasions last night in town amday after 2 home invasions a few blocks away in cathedral gardens. Owner was walking dos came back and walked in on robbers. Held the owner on ground fired two shots in the ceiling and said the next two go into your wife. In another house owners were tied up at gunpoint. 52 village cops here are clueless.
First, hell yeah Glen Cove! That's the Metro 303 done by Mill Creek Residential. It's a $2 Billion project all together. Cool stuff and will provide maybe the only truly diverse setting on Long Island, one of the nation's most segregated areas. Are you involved in the development behind the car dealerships east of Franklin? If so I would l love to heat about it. It was on bedell ave and Cynthia ct the home invasion. Around the block from where i used to live before I moved a few months ago. Apparently seven break ins last night in town here. And of course GC=Garden City. What else what it be Glen Cove??
LMAO. You think LI is segregated? It isn't. You got the rich areas, the middle class areas and the poor areas. It's income segregated, not racially segregated at all. Actually, Long Island is the most segregated non urban area in the nation (forget the source, can try to find it for you). It is utterly segregated. Both racially and economically. Rich areas have very few if any pockets of poverty or even middle class. You have huge swarths of middle class neighborhoods (albeit with home values above 500k). Then pockets of significant poverty, often with the racial lines drawn there too... the Village of Hempstead. 45% african american, 45% hispanic-latino. Yeah, that's not segregation. Ever been to Wyandanch? Roosevelt? How about by school. The districts I mentioned vs say Locust Valley or North Shore... the segregation between Huntington Station and the norther areas of the town by the Bay? If one thing can not be (legitimately) challenged, it is the complete segregation of Long Island. Heck, you mention little India, which is hicksville. That's my whole point. As an aggregate Long Island has many different races and cultures, but they are absolutely divided physically and socially. Take Glen Cove, where I live. You look at the numbers... what a nice melting pot! Except "the hill" is where you have most of the Spanish and African American population. Down in the tonier parts of town, its White/Jewish. Heck, even the whites are segregated to a degree with strong polish areas or italian ones. Sorry, Long Island is segregated. Now, diversity... you are absolutely right. Diversity is not all black. Or all white. Or Latino. The whole point of diversity is people of different races, cultures, backgrounds and economic means. Today, Hempstead Village is anything but... however we are creating a new environment there that, in my opinion, may very well be the future of Long Island judging by the trends that we see nationwide. Millenials looking for more diversity. Increasing mixed-race marriage. Desire and understanding of the benefits of mixed income communities, not dumping grounds of subsidized housing that further both racial and economic segregation. So trust me, I very much understand what diversity is, and why it is beneficial not just socially, but economically. It's what the market wants for urban living, including urban living within traditionally suburban regions.Heck, my whole career is based on understanding these trends and creating tomorrow what doesn't exist - but what is sorely needed and desired by the market - today.LMAO. You think LI is segregated? It isn't. You got the rich areas, the middle class areas and the poor areas. It's income segregated, not racially segregated at all. Diversity does not mean mostly black.
