Looks like Baltimore and Howard counties had about 50k without power earlier but my county (AA) had less than 500. I think they are burying cable out where I live, I know all my neighborhood is buried but the connections weren't until just recently. Would be nice to get through this with power, seems like NYC is taking the beating we did during Irene.

Those underground lines are a blessing and a curse. Great as they hold during weather.However, when the power goes out because an animal chewed through one of the underground lines it takes way too long to fix.Had an office in Long Island for a few years, and a squirrel chewed through the underground wires. Took LIPA 6 days to fix.MFers.Glad you are holding up well at any rate.

Not saying this is over because apparently it's gonna get bad again here, but 7.4 million lost power during Irene. That one just hugged the cost for days so the short-term damage was more severe. This one seems like it will last three more days with all the snow/rain and wind that is still to come.
 
And Mayor Langford of Atlantic City trying to blame Chris Christie of not being the time for finger pointing and now is the time to worry about getting people to safety. This will be a fun to watch the barbs go back and forth.

No, 2 days ago was the time to get everyone to safety except YOU told them it was ok to stay Mayor. Rescuing people in these conditions tonight is not an option.

Not saying this is over because apparently it's gonna get bad again here, but 7.4 million lost power during Irene. That one just hugged the cost for days so the short-term damage was more severe. This one seems like it will last three more days with all the snow/rain and wind that is still to come.

Still too early to compare. Just updated to over 4 million out and I know people are saying this isn't as bad as Irene but for all intents and purposes it is. Perhaps individually it might not be, but on the whole and financially, it will be. Didn't see cranes or building facades fall off during Irene. I'd expect the number of power outages to continue to rise and power outages aren't the greatest indicator of which storm was worse. Irene was more widespread with all of her effects as outages spread throughout the East Coast. This seems more localized at least with the hurricane effects and it remains to be seen how the snow/rain to the West will continue to impact those states. Just look at the space picture comparing Irene to Sandy and I think you'll see whats worse.

I think Irene and the summer storm cleared out a good chunk of the tree branches that cause power lines to go down. If Irene and that summer storm hadn't happened before Sandy hit, I bet we'd have well over 10 million without power right now.

And another good point, not only that but I'm sure that many electric systems were investigated/upgraded to withstand more in the way of weather. I'm sure the threats by people like Christie to fine these companies major money made them beef up their preparedness.

Yeah this one seems to have a lot more flooding and the snow make it less predictable over time. Irene had Tornadoes following her though, at least we wont have that problem. Irene caused $19 billion in damage, that's a tall order.
 
Just had a very large branch hit the side of the house. Went out to check it out and a branch about 4 inch in diameter smashed down on our deck. Good thing I had a hard hat on at the wife's insistence. I did not see any major damage but stuff is flying all over.

I saw $15.8 million but either way, the damage in New York wasn't as big as thought and still cost a billion in New York. The amount of money between the expensive real estate in New York and the Jersey Shore where houses might have just washed away will be astronomical. Imagine the values of those houses which may be condemned? And this will have more far reaching affects like shutting down Wall Street for days, subways for days, etc. Not sure if they'll be calculated in the damages, but the cost/burden this will put on the economy will be felt world wide.

Yeah it seems to be getting worse. Now I gotta take the dogs out in a few. That will be an adventure.
 
Kind of feel bad for the CNN guy in Atlantic City. Dude has been up to his thigh in water for as long as I can remember just getting pummeled by everything, surprised he hasn't gotten hit by debris yet.

Irene's tornados had little to do with that $19 billion. Tornados very rarely ever cause a billion or more in damage. Only 6 in history have, and it requires adjusting 4 of them for inflation to get there.In my opinion it looks like Sandy has already caused more damage than Irene, but it's hard to judge at this point.
