JCP&L doing a really lousy job providing info so far. I'm certainly not expecting them to know exactly when we're going to get power back, but the lack of info is disturbing. Hell, pse&g (who provides my gas) is sending out emails every 4 hours and constantly tweeting updates. Am I down for 2 days or 10? A heads up would really be nice.
How are you down power and still on the computer? Just curios.
I have this thing called a "smart phone" its pretty rad.
Doesn't that require power at some point? My smartphone needs recharged all the time.

Not to seem callous, but WTF thought it was a good idea to take the HMS Bounty out for a sail with this storm bearing down?
They set out last week. The captain thought he could beat the storm.http://nation.time.com/2012/10/30/hms-bounty-crewperson-dead-captain-missing/
man, when the weather started getting rough, that tiny ship was tossed
The problem was they lost power underway, both generators failed, and she became a sitting duck, could not pump out water fast enough.
Wow, its pretty bad out there. No phone, no lights no motor cars, not a single luxury. Its almost like Robinson Crusoe as primitive as can be.

Man, those Breezy Pt pics are heartbreaking
:goodposting:

BTW, I hope you guys realize the subway isn't going to be up and running for at least a month.

Good luck my iBrothers & iSisters. :(
no way man. This is NY. There might be a few trains out of service or stations closed but itll be up and running by end of the week
I hope you are right but I don't think so. If it were fresh water, possibly.

I thought it only flooded some of the subway stations. As such, I can't imagine that the subways won't be back up and running pretty quickly. New York is a pretty resilient city.

They may not even have the water pumped out of the system by the end of the week.

468 stations, roughly 280 are subterranean, 150 are elevated stations, the rest are platforms in a trench. All 7 East River tubes were flooded. Some parts of the system can probably be restored quickly.

They started pumpimg this morning. Mass transit is a very high priority.

I know. Estimates have been up to three to four days just to get the water out. I hope it's up and running tomorrow, but there are going to be huge swaths of the subway system that require repairs, and I'm pretty sure the parts aren't available at Wal-Mart.

Officials said the underground tunnels suffered extensive flooding, and it could be up to five days before full service is restored.

Lhota stressed that no timetable had yet been set, so any estimate would be nothing more than a “wild guess.”

You're talking mostly downtown. There are ways to get people in to midtown without going through downtown.ETA: Full service in five days? That would be incredible. I'd be surprised. But I don't see why they wouldn't be able to have BK/Queens/Bronx express trains going into midtown and maybe even further down.

Why are those engineers spending all their time working the problem? Shouldn't they be estimating repair ETAs and communicating with end users?

I am sure that portions of the system will be up and running within a week. But there are parts of the subway system that will be down for quite some time.

:lmao:It just seems like an overly optimistic "don't everybody panic" kind of estimate to me GB.
Depends on what "it" is. Are you talking about the entire system back up and running, or just a bare bones, get them to where they're going with only ten or fifteen minutes of walking. Even a few tracks running express trains will go a long, long way. Gotta start with triage.

You mean by posters in this thread?Because the MTA and the Mayor have said repeatedly, 'There is no timetable' for restoration of subway service.ConEd said 2-3 days for lower Manhattan only, since revised to 3-4 days. The grid and the steam system below 3Xth* were shutdown pre-emptively. *not sure where power starts/stops. Bloomberg said 35th Street, various news outlets 39th; our office on West 40th is down.

I read someplace that it would be up by the end of the week.

:lmao: at the New Yorkers already getting uppity about not having services restored or close to restored.

Grab a Snickers fellas...

Midtown is open for business - or rather, about 1/2 of the places are open. Tons of bars & restaurants along 8th and 9th Ave, along with bodegas, Food Emporium, Whole Foods. But Duane Reade and most chain restaurants are closed.

I live right outside Hartford, CT. My power was out for 5 days after Irene, and was bracing for the same. Power went out yesterday at 7:00 and it just came back on!!! Jackpot!

My area always seems to lose power at least twice a year, I have no idea why. After each power outage, I end up realizing I need better supplies. I have bought some terrible lanterns and radios. But I have finally found some good ones. Must haves for when the lights go out, IMO.

Rayovac SE3DLNCOM Sportsman LED Lantern : This lantern is small but puts out a lot of light. Only needs 3 D batteries and lasts awhile.

Coleman LED Quad Lantern : Expensive, but worth it (goes on sale a lot). Can detach the lights attached to the lantern. Takes 8 D batteries.

Sony ICF38 Portable AM/FM Radio : A battery operated radio is a must. I listened to the Monday Night game on this one.
