My area always seems to lose power at least twice a year, I have no idea why. After each power outage, I end up realizing I need better supplies. I have bought some terrible lanterns and radios. But I have finally found some good ones. Must haves for when the lights go out, IMO.

Rayovac SE3DLNCOM Sportsman LED Lantern : This lantern is small but puts out a lot of light. Only needs 3 D batteries and lasts awhile.

Coleman LED Quad Lantern : Expensive, but worth it (goes on sale a lot). Can detach the lights attached to the lantern. Takes 8 D batteries.

Sony ICF38 Portable AM/FM Radio : A battery operated radio is a must. I listened to the Monday Night game on this one.

May look dorky but I LOVE these cree headlamps for moving around / doing stuff. . However if you've got multiple people in a room, then the Coleman above is great for ambient light. :thumbup:

Still here. No power. Generator hanging in but we are being cautious with it. LBI is just devastated. My office is probably destroyed. We were lucky where we live but there is destruction all around us. Hit the home depot for some supplies and this part of ocean county looks like a b level apocalypse movie.

No power here, likely for several days, and no generator. Slipped my mind that it gets dark early now so I can't do any reading now. Going to call up some buddies, hoping some restaurant/bar will be open. Temperatures are supposed to be in the 40s tonight which should be fun sleeping.

 
Those who stayed behind in Atlantic City to ride out Hurricane Sandy emerged from waterlogged homes and hiding places a little after 10 a.m. Tuesday to find the largest crowds jostling for position in front of the 24/7 Food Market.

The line was much shorter at the convenience store just a few blocks down the street. But the 24/7 Food Market had a special appeal to the impoverished, bargain-conscious shoppers who were left in Atlantic City in the wake of the massive hurricane.

“They don’t have loosies at the other place,” said Tiffani Carrillo, 36, referring to cigarettes sold loose or out of the pack.

Very important to secure your loosies asap.

Oh there is more:

The going price was two cigarettes for $1. As the line grew to about 30 people, the store posted a guard at the front door to hold down overcrowding inside the store and to collect money from those who just wanted a couple of smokes.

“Let me in, let me in,” called a woman at the front of the line.

Just drove around the Bridgewater /Middlesex area (for those who know nj) looking for an open fast food place. Knew it was a long shot, but I have a full tank of gas and nothing else to do before

total disaster area. Almost every road is closed and you can't turn around on 22. They closed the jug handles because all the traffic lights are out.

So yeah, I can't imagine our office will be open tomorrow. You can't get anywhere.

Gonna spend most of the night trying to keep my aquarium alive. Temperature has dropped just about to the bottom of the acceptable range and I'm manually causing surface aeration to keep the water oxygenated. If the tank dies, I'll probably just break it down. Don't have the energy to rebuild it again.

 
What a day. Power went out a 6:15ish pm yesterday. Turns out it was a local problem, a tree branch took out the power lines 2 houses down. Shortly thereafter a double oak tree took fell into the street taking more line with it. Further down the street a tree fell on top of a house and even further down, a tree glanced off a house and tore up more line.

We are expecting to be without power for 2-3 days at best, but I was able to borrow a generator and have that set up for mild electricity needs. It will be nice to take a hot shower after helping the neighborhood clear a driveway past the double oak that was blocking the whole street (I live on the wrong end of a culdesac).

 
I forgot to mention we spent the night in the basement because two trees (not ours) threaten both bedrooms. Fortunately, they survived but we had reason to worry with the rest of the carnage on the street.

Just a few blocks away is the coastline which apparently is devastated, but I wouldn't know since I rode out the storm with a radio.

After Irene and now Sandy i can say its definitely more fun to be able to watch what's going on instead of being in everything but radio silence.

Also, Im seeing pics of a completely destroyed Mantaloking, NJ on Weatherboy's facebook page. I spent every summer as a kid in Mantaloking. Sick

 
Power back on. Our family and friends on LBI have pretty much lost almost everything and won't be allowed back for days. Drove out to Lacey to get gas on the parkway for backup generator. Line for a mile or so. My buddy and I get the car filled all the spare tanks filled, and a woman comes up to us crying because her car ran out of gas in the line on the parkway. Se we dumped one of our spares in her tank to get her going again and then had to wait in line again to get gas again.

Our house is fine. Massive damage to the landscaping and fence is destroyed but the trees that fell missed anything important, thank God. Clean up will take weeks. As Gov. Christie said the Jersey Shore I grew up with is just gone. Just, gone.

I work in Hillsborough and will try to make it in the morning...usualy a 25 35 min commute...I'm expecting an hour and plan to leave at 6am

You gotta almost print this stuff out and keep it in a book somewhere to remind yourself and others that nothing is more important than your life. I believe other folks would have done something similar.

At least one of those washovers is so deep that it may develop into a permanent breach—an opening–between the ocean and the bay.

There have been 33 deaths attributed to the storm in statewide. There are about 300 people staying at Jersey City's seven shelters including several with their pets at the pet friendly shelter at Pershing Field, a health department official said.

Just heard from a close friend that their house is gone. At least one family member most likely lost theirs as well.

A rather large massive part of the AC boardwalk is gone. Casino's seem to be ok for the most part and may try to open before the end of the week, although getting to them won't be easy.Ocean City is in bad shape. Like LBI it doesn't appear anyone will be allowed there for awhile.

Except for the part of the AC boardwalk that washed away (it was scheduled for demo anyway), things aren't too bad down there from what I hear. I'm sure there is plenty of water damage, and some roads were damaged and still closed, but haven't heard anything terribly tragic.It sounds like Ocean City suffered the worst of the shore towns, mostly property damage and it was still flooded today. Residents are not allowed to return. Businesses on the boardwalk were mostly ok. Seems like one of the biggest problems they will have is removing the beach from the cities. It looked like half a foot of sand everywhere in most of the shore towns.

City county and state are getting the snow plows to move the sand off of the roads. The barrier islands will never be the same again. Getting reports that a new inlet was cut into Holgate from the massive water surge that happened there. The actual coastline is going to be different after this.
 
Former Flyer Rick MacLeish owns a house in Ocean City that apparently suffered some minor damage.

BroadStBull- MacLeish's wife, Charlene, said she opened a downstairs door and some water rushed in _ along with a fish. #SandyInPhilly
