Long story... skip to bold if you bore easily :)

Lunch break, happened to be driving by a liquor store that my folks frequent for their wine. The head guy at the shop used to work at another store and took great care of them for years. When he changed shops, they followed him. Have developed a great relationship with the guy. He used to hook up our booze for BBQfest on the cheap. Hadn't met the guy face to face in over a decade though...

ANYWAYS, drop in and browse. he doesn't recognize me. They've got a solid selection including some stuff like Stagg Jr, Elmer T Lee, and Buffalo Trace experimental Collection stuff. Most of it is overpriced though... Angels envy for $49.99.. ETL for $49.99...etc.

Then I turn the corner and notice a Weller rack. Loads of Special Reserve 750 and 1.75s.... and...whats this? 10 bottles of Weller Antique 107?! $24.99?! Grabbed two... put one back and grabbed a bottle of their Private Store Pick Buffalo Trace Single Barrel (a little steep at $23.99) as well. I figure if I love the OWA107 I can come back tomorrow.

THEN, I head up to the counter.... "You guys have a bead on any Weller 12yr?" (chorus of laughs from the staff). "you get that a lot don't you?" More chuckles and "yep". Chat a bit with Shane... Then let him know who I am. He lights up. "Oh man I love your folks... they followed me here...etc etc" Told me stories of them letting him know when he undercharged then accidentally, etc.

We chat a bit longer. He then tells me he'll be sure to set me some W12 aside, I ask if I can take my number and give me a ring when something comes in. He said "we don't usually but I will for you!". I jot down the info and note that I'm looking for W12 on there. He takes it... jots something on there and adds that "he's going to set aside a little something special this November, too" :excited:

Pretty much HAS to mean he's going to try to hold me a bottle from their Pappy allocation... right?

Very much looking forward to tasting the OWA107 tonight...
Maybe Pappy or maybe Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (kinda makes sense since you were after Weller 12). Heck, maybe both.
Valid point, he could be talking about George T Stagg or William Larue Weller. I will likely drop back in tomorrow or the next day to grab another antique for a buddy and chat him up a bit further.

So most of you probably know I sold my company recently. My partner and I decided to buy a barrel of Jack Daniels Single Barrel to celebrate. We plan to give bottles to our employees and the executives of the folks who bought us.

We picked it up today, and we got to keep the barrel. It's awesome!

We had a distiller come out to my house with a bunch of samples. We had a few guys over and we tasted five different barrels and selected the one we liked best. They bottled that barrel spefically for us, and each bottle comes with a medallion commerating the buyout.

I just thought you guys would get a kick out of it. We ended up with 246 bottles total, and the cost was about $10K.

I'm in a group that does barrel selections 3-4 times a year and it's always a surreal experience. We've been going to the distilleries to do our picks and then they slot it into their bottling schedule and deliver it through a liquor store.

Who was the distiller that came to your place? Chris Morris? Jeff Arnett?

[icon] jealous that you're able to chat someone up and get hooked up. There are too many people around Cincy wanting hard to find stuff for me to stand a chance outside of the occasional raffle

I've got a wide range of selection and some stuff that can't be found in many places but not things like ETL, ECBP, BTAC, etc. If you look on Party Source's website and see anything you're interested in, I can help you out

Back on the 70s my favorite bourbon was I. W. Harper.

Sometime in the early 80s I couldn't get it any more; that the Japanese bought it all and send it directly there.

Now and then I'd find a few bottles on a dusty shelf in old liquor stores across the country and buy it all. Usually at a discount since it'd been sitting on the shelf for 10-20 years.

I finally saw it on the shelves last weekend in a shiny new bottle for $35. I bought one and enjoyed it very much. I had 20 year old Pappy a few times last week and while it was better, i didn't find it much better and certainly not 965 better.

I don't understand any of this, but I'm intrigued.

Elmer T Lee

Elijah Craig Barrell Proof

Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (a series of premium small batch stuff like William Larue Weller, George T Stagg, etc)

I've only tried Elmer t lee of that list. Very tasty.

Thanks for the offer Guster, if you wanted a bottle of ETL id be happy to ship ya one. I can get them somewhat regularly at $39.99.

Buddy I've been exploring the bourbon world with has a contact who owns a few big bars and is apparently the biggest customer for a distributor in KC. He told contact to see if he could get some EH Taylor Cured Oak. Contact responded "sure" they're $80ea, how many do you want?

We had him order a case. Apparently distributor was playing hard to get with it, he wondered why. Distributor informed him they only make X cases... super limited. Contact was intrigued and tried EHT Single barrel and loved it, has decided he's going to keep some of the bottles.

Regardless, it's shipping in October. Not sure if we're getting 4...6... or more. If I get 2 I'm drinking one :banned: and flipping one :bag:

You suck. Anything other than standard release stuff is next to impossible to find around here.

OFBB came out yesterday at Party Source (one of the biggest liquor stores in the country, so probably gets a good allotment) - they announced around 2pm that it would go on sale at 4pm. Within an hour, there were more people in line than bottles available.

Don't forget about your good friends in the FFA as you stumble upon these finds :)

 My eyes are peeled. I'll be doing a bit of hunting this weekend as I know Weller 12 is reportedly going to be hitting shelves here relatively soon.

Finally grabbed a bottle of Larceny. Very damn solid at $20ish. Straightbourbon forums have me seriously considering a bottle of Ol Grandad Bonded at $16ish.

Michter's Toasted Barrel Finish is out... Grabbed two and now somewhat regretting it. May end up flipping one of them.

Went to grab a 1792 Sweet Wheat and it rang up at $10 instead of $34... went back the next day and same price. ####... dropped in a bit later to clean them out (3 more bottles) and the manager caught the mistake. Damn.... hand in cookie jar. So I traded 3 off for 3 Weller 12's (which I enjoy much much much more as a nightly sipper).

Cracked my Stagg Jr 132.2 proof... surprisingly tasty over a rock. Really enjoy the heat/spice. Definitely not firewater. Great concentrated flavor. Glad I held on to it.

Had some Bookers Last night at dinner... was not impressed.

Hit my Willet pot still reserve last night pretty hard. Man that stuff is tasty after a couple mins with a cube. Also grabbed a bottle of smooth ambler 7yr... Solid stuff.
How does the Willett stack up to Basil Hayden? I saw Willett the other day in a Ky state liquor store and was going to get it but they had a nice deal going with Basil Hayden. Given that I've had Basil Hayden I went with the one I know on sale over the one I don't know not on sale. Curious how you say Willett is vs Basil (or other).

On a related note I have some Ky Willetts in my family tree. Pretty sure they are the originator of the bourbon. Maybe I should have thrown my distant relatives some business? :hifive: :banned:

Can't go wrong there, but I'd recommend the OGD 114 over the BIB.
I do prefer higher proof bourbons, so noted. I guess i was looking at the BiB as a super cheap session drinker... but may grab a taste of both and see where we stand.

You mean Willett bourbon in general or the Pot Still Reserve? I've not had the former (have tasted the rye though), and haven't had basil recently so not sure I can fairly compare basil to WPSR. Sorrry :(

I really like both Willett and Basil Hayden. If I had to drink one I would go wtih Willett. I am a big fan of ryes, but for some reason the Willett rye didn't totally grab me. The Willett bourbon does grab me. Good stuff.

Officially have my anchor down in store #2 for peak bourbon season...

STORE 1: As stated, head guy has been my folks' wine-guy for decades. He took down my contact info and has promised to "set aside something special" for me this October... he knows I'm a weller guy, so hoping I'm looking at WLW or Pappy (both wheaters).

STORE 2: Saw a kickball buddy behind the counter of the store by my office that I've recently discovered (last few months)... just found out he actually owns the place. They do a lot of bourbon business. Got his number and texted him today asking about any lists they had going for the peak season stuff. he said "I'll keep an eye out, if I get any BTAC or Pappy, I will hold some back. We do a list but I'll make sure you're near the top". :excited:

Now just plan to drop in each spot once a week on lunch break to keep my face fresh (and to see what they've got going on, I kinda enjoy the "hunt")...

Fingers crossed....

Some of my friends did a blind bourbon tasting a couple weeks ago. It was not super formal and we all ended up with 3 day hangovers, but it was a good time and had some surprising results. There was no consensus, but Buffalo Trace was the big winner and Makers was the big loser. The menu was:

- Buffalo Trace

- Makers Mark

- Knob Creek

- Woodford Reserve

- Basil

- Bowman Bros Small ( liked that one a lot)

- Russel's Reserve

Great time save for the monster hangover. The wives/girlfriends catered and the it all ended on a mess of dancing and one guy trying to show off his axe throwing skills, so it came with some risk, but was well worth it.

 sounds like my kinda party

Tonight... I'm going to start by cracking the Old Grand-Dad 114 I grabbed on Tuesday to see what the fuss is about... then let my palette take me from there...

What's everyone else drinking tonight?

Typing on phone makes that post sound like I'm still drunk from the tasting. I'm drinking beer right now, but a Blantons neat is on the schedule for sundown.

Cheers man. Not at all judging.

For the record: old grand dad 114 did NOT impress. Disliked strongly.

:(

Man it is everywhere here. Buddy just sent me shelf pics from Ft Campbell.. $19.90 a bottle there (NO TAX :banned: )

Actually switched to BT after a couple pours of ETL, a W12, and an OGD114 last night since my palette was already toast.

Had him grab me:

2x Russel Reserve 10yr @ 23.90

1x Elijah Craig 12yr @ 22.90

1x Basil Hayden 8yr @ 27.90

Damn that's cheap.

My SIL works for Sazerac, specifically with their bourbons. She handles the Chicago region for them and just got recruited from Gallo so I am excited to be stocking my bourbon collection up with lots of good stuff over the next year It is a good thing since the wine cellar is pretty much maxed out at this point.

Why hello, friend! Tell me about how she can set aside a set of the Buffalo Trace antique collection for me, again? ;)

He's left the base, but I can get it all day here for low 20s. Can get handles too. If you want me to send you some for cost + shipping I'll be happy to help a FBG out.

Class 6 is always ridiculous with prices. Last time I was home my sister (whose husband is active military) took us there and we dropped $300 for proabably what would have cost me $450 here.

Might have to take you up on this !

I'm super late to this party, but Jameson Caskmates is my new favorite whiskey. Jameson gave a stout beer maker their casks to use for beer making. When they got them back, they made whiskey in the stout soaked barrels. Genius. There is absolutely no burn, and it's got a hint of butter and chocolate going with it. Some say they can detect the hops, but those are the pretentious bastards who talk about legs on wine and whatnot. It's really smooth, and around $30 for 750ml.

Sounds interesting. I'll have to check that out.

Folks hit their usual wine guy yesterday (the one who promised me "something special" this October).... My pop informed him that I've introduced him to Bourbon. He laughed and made another comment, telling him to get ready because he's going to "Set him up with some goodies next month".

Also may have gotten another line in the water with the biggest store in west TN. Buddy on BBQfest team knows the owner and said he'd text him on my behalf to get on his short list for the fall classics.

Last night brought a bottle of Weller 12 and Basil Haydens over to the folks place for dinner. Sat on the back patio with the old man with some sippers and nice cigars... good times. He initailly preferred the BH, but once the ice started to work he began to quickly appreciate the benefits of a fuller flavored bourbon. Left him with the bottle of Weller 12.

Basil Hayden is the fuller flavored one :oldunsure:

Can't imagine putting ice in Weller :bourbonsnob:

Also, extremely jealous that you can get hookups. It's nearly impossible here

Gotta disagree here on the fuller flavor, but I guess that's subjective...

Basil is like water to me. Sure, the high rye profile would generally indicate a more robust flavor than the wheated mashbill of Weller... but somehow the Weller has much more depth of flavor for my palette. Maybe it's the 12yrs vs 8yrs in oak. Maybe it's the 90proof vs 80proof. I dunno.

From modern thirst:

I struggle with Basil Hayden. It generally stands as the antithesis for what I look for in a bourbon with the exception of its high rye concentration. It’s very low proof, very light, and doesn’t seem to envelope the senses when drinking the way a full-bodied bourbon does.
I hear ya on the neat... I enjoy it neat in a glencairn at times as well. However, when it's hot out, I like one large cube in my bourbon. I generally go with repeated short 1-finger pours so they don't last long enough to dilute much.

Now, in late october when I'm by the fire in the mountains of Arkansas? I will be drinking good bourbon neat when I'm not mixing Evan with coke.

Also, my pop has had bourbon exactly twice now (first taste was bakers on a rock), so neat is not the way to win him over. Working on letting him taste the way flavors change as the whiskey chills and water intermingles.

It's a little more pricey, but I just can't get enough of the Angel's Envy Rye. I also really like Templeton Rye which should be right in your price range.
